new and useful Improvements in Brake Shoes, of which the following is 'a specification.
This invention'velat'es to brake vshoes and has for its primary object to provide a simple and economical construction which will provide greater durability and strength than devices of a similar characterv heretofore known.
The many other objects and advantages of the invention will be better understood by reference to the following specification when consildered 'in connection Vwith the accompanying drawing, illustrating a select-v ed embodlment, in whlch- Fig. 1 isa plan View of the reinforcing shell partially formed;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of a prtion of the back plate of the shell shown in ig. l;
Fig. 3` is a plan view ofthe completed brake shoe;
'Fig 4 is a transverse Section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
. 'Referrin to the drawings the brake shoe is provide with a shell 10 com rising a back 1'1, side walls 14, and end wa ls 15, the central portion 12 of 'the back being of greater thickness than the portions 13 on each side thereof. The side walls 14 and end walls l5 are preerabl reticulated and formed integral with t e back 11. The
shell is preferably formed flat (Fig. 1) and then bent into pan shape prior to the casting of the shoe body thereon. ln the forming of the shoe the side and end walls are bent downwardly on substantially the lines 16 and then the end walls are bent inwardl on the line 17 so that the ends 18 substantially ibut. as indicated in Fig. 3. penings 19 are thus formed in the shell through which the metal of the body passes to form the end lugs 20. The portions 22 of the shell along llthe line of bend are preferably notreticuated.
l'he side walls la and the end walls 15 are preferably corrugated transversely and ongitudinally, es shown in Figs. 4 and 5. This method et corrngating the walls .of the shell is A particularly advantageous. The back plate 11 is provided with slots 25 to admit the attachingends 26 of the lug 27.
The body 3l) of the shoe is cast inthe usual' @o manner with the shell 10 embedded therein.
My improved shell is simple in construction and may be economically produced. The thickened vcentral portion of the -shell very materially strengthens the shoe and the connection of the attaching lug therewith. The corrugating of the side and end walls of the shell transversely and longitudinally is advantageous as it provides a better connection between the shell and the cast body and improves thewearing'qualities of the shoe.
:made vin the form and arrangement of parts 1without departing from the spirit of my 75 invention and I reserve'the right to make all such as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
l. In a brake shoe, a reinforcing back 3 comprising a rolled plate of ductile metal having a relatively' thick central portion extendning longitudinally thereof and relatively thinner ortions on each side thereof.
2. ln a bra e shoe, a reinforcing back @5 thereof, parts of said thinner portions bee ing reticulated.
4.-. In a brake shoe, a reinforcing back comprising a rolled plate of ductile metal Qhaving a relatively thick central portion and relatively thinner portions on each side 30 thereothe outer edge portion of said thinnel portions being foraminous.
5. In a brake shoe, a reinforcing shell comprising a rolled plate of ductile metal having a relatively thick vcentral portion mi and relatively thinner portions on each side thereof, the outer portion of each of said thinner portions being bent downwardly to form the side walls of the shell,
6. ln a brake shoe, a reinforcing shell im comprising a rolled plate of ductile metal having a relatively thick central portion l am aware that various changes may be and relative-ly thinner portions on each side thereof, the outer portion of each of said thinner portions being reticulated and bent downwardly to form the side Walls of the shell.
7. In a brake shoe, a pan shaped reinforcing shell f ductile. ymetal comprising a solirl metal back plate of varying thickness and foraminous side and end Walls formed integra-l With said back plate.
8. In a brake shoe, a pan shaped reinforcing shell comprising a plate of ductile metal having a relatively thick central portion and relatively thin side portions, portions oi said side portions being bent to torni the side and end Walls of said shell.
49. A brake shoe, comprising a reinforcing back having a relatively thick central portion extending longitudinally thereot' and 4relatively thin side portions. an aetuating lug secured 'to the central portion of said back, and a body cast on said back.
10. A brake shoe, comprising a reinforcing back having a relatively thick central portion extending longitudinally thereof and relatively thin side portions, a key lug having attaching members, passing through said side portions and projecting beneath the under face of said central portion.7 and 5@ a body cast on said back.
`11. In a brake shoe. a nan shaped reinforo ingshell comprising a plate of ductile metal having the edge portions thereof bent to form the side and end Walls of the shell and the end lug openings therein.
12. In a brake shoe, a pan shaped reinforcing shell comprising a plate of ductile metal having the edge portions thereof' rcticulated and bent to form the side and end Walls of the shell and the end lug openings therein. Y
13. In a brake shoe, a shell comprising '.1 top, sides, and end Walls,- the sides being corrugated longitudinally and transversely.
14. In a brake sho', a shell comprising zx top, sides and endv Walls, the sides and end Walls being corrugatednlongitudinally and transversely.
15. In a brake shoe, a pan-shaped shell comprising a top, sides and end Walls, the sides. being corrugated longitudinally and transversely and reticulated.
16. In a brake shoe, a shell comprising a top., sides, and end Walls, the sides being corrugated longitudinally.
17. In a brake shoe, a shell comprising a top, sides, and end Walls, the sides and end Walls being corrugated transversely,
18. In a brake shoe, a shell comprising a top, retieulated sides and end Walls, the sides being corrugated longitudinally.
