COUNTERBALANCED FLAGPOLE.
.Application filed February To @ZZ 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS PH. Bonannnr., a citizen of the United States, residingy at San Francisco, in the county ot Sairl `ra11- cisco and State oi.t California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Counter balanced Flagpoles, ot which the 'following is a specification.
The invention relates to a. counterlnilanced flag pole.
The object ol the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and ellieicut eounterbalanced flag pole adapted to be lowered from a vertical position to a horizontal positionlor painting` or other purposes and equipped withan ornamental. base adapted to conceal normally the pivotal. mounting of the pole and counterbalaneing means.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists inthe construction and novel combination and arrangement of partshereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyinpl drawings and pointed out, in the clanns hereto appended, 1t being un-y `ot reference designate corresponding` parts in the several views:-
Figure l is an elevation of a eounterbalanced tiae pole, constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical 'sectional view'o'l" the same, the pole .being` shown `in dotted lines `in its lowered position.
Figure 3 is a `horizontal sectional view on the line 3 8 ot FigureQ; i
Figure 4l is a similar view on the line elw-fl: ot Figure 2. f
In the acconipanyinp` drawing'. in which is illustrated the preterred embodiment ot the invention, l designates a counterbalanced flag' pole designed to be constructed ot wood or any other suitable material and pivoted Serial No. 619,751.
'beam .fixed in a foundation l ot concrete or other material when the flag' pole is mounted in the ground but the flap; pole stub may be fixed in any other desired manner for enablineY the tlag pole to be applied to the tops ot buildings or any other desired place. The lower portion 5 ot the Hag pole, especially when constructed ot' wood, .is preferably squared and it is provided at one oli its sides with a recess G receiving,` the wings or flanges of the tlag' pole stub, which is preferably arranged in lush relation with the adjacent side tace of the flag pole when the same is in an upright position, as clearly illustrated in .Figures 3 and 4l ol? the accompanying drawing. The central wing or web ot the pol-e stub is extended above the side wings and this vertical extension 7 of the flag pole stub is pierced by the pin or bolt 2, which also pierces the flag pole, as clearly shown in Figure l ot the drawing'.
'lhellag pole is equipped with an ornamental base composed ot tiXed and movable sections S and 9 and designed to be constructed of metal, wood or a combination of metal and wood,or any other suitable material and thesaid ornamental base conceals `curved and ornamented as shown and it may be of au7 desired eontiouration or ornax FD -mental character and it is provided at intervals with vent apertures l() preferably located in substantially concealed positions at the bottom ot annular enlargement l1 and l2. The bottom of the base is preferably hexagonal, while the base above the he.- agonal portion is preferably circular and tapered upwardly.
The' movable section of the base is prorlhe stationary base is suit-ablyl `departing from the invention.
vided at the bottom and at its intermediate portions with spaced parallel horizontally disposed arms 13, 14 and 15, which are secured by suitable fastening devices 16 to the squared portion of the Hag pole atopposite sides thereof as shown; These fastening devices consist ot bolts and screws and may be of any desired number and they bottom arms 13 are `formed integral with walls of weight receiving compartments 17, provided interiorly of the said movable sec tion of the base. The compartments are formed by walls 18 and 19v anda central connecting wall 2Ol and the said movable section is provided with a bottom Wall 21 extending beneath allot the compartments and formed integral'with the vsaid -wallsiand with the movable section.y -These compartments 17 are adapted to receiveweights or counterbalancing material of yany character and from which counterbalance the flag pole and enable the same to be readily swung downward from a vertical to a horizontal position. As the liag pole swings downward the weighted movable section of the base lis carried upward as will be readily understood. The flag pole however, `may be weighted or counterbalanc'ed in various other ways and the base may be considerably modiiied as to form and structure without The walls 18, 19 and 2() form central andside weight compartments and provide a recess to receive the flag pole, the arms 13' forming continuations ofthe side walls of'thc recess.`
The sections 'ot the ornamental base are provided at the top with upwardly extending ilanges 22 which form a'marginal flange around the top of the base andaround which l extends a locking collar oi"sleeve'-'23 which is ornamental in its characteran'd" which at its top 2li snugly fits theround portionl "of the pole. rlhe locking sleeve or collar; whichv is spaced slightly at the bottonnfrom'lthe flange 22 to permit limited vibrationof the pole is dctachably retained in locking position by means' of screwsi25 or other suit' able fastening devices, which engage4 the squared portion ol' the -lag pole andiwliich are aoapted be withdrawn to enable the loclringsleeve or collar to be lifted 'clear of' The lugs 26 are perforated lto receivethe said padlock shackle, but vit will be appa-rentl that various locking devices may be employed for this purpose. YInstead ofemploying a liag'pole stub T-shaped'in cross section?, any
The contiguous vertical other desired form of stub may, of course, be used.
What is claimed is:
1. A counterbalanced flag pole of the class described, including arfixed lflag pole stub, a pole pivoted to and supported` by the said stub and adapted to be swung downwardly Jfrom a vertical to a horizontal position, an vornamental base surrounding" the lower portion of the pole and thc stub and c'o'icealing boththe'stub and lower Vportion of the pole, and means located within the base 'for' counterbalancing the pole, saifl means being. located `beyond the pole and the stub.
2. A counterbalalnced flag pole ot the lclass describedf, including a flag pole stub,
