ERNEST E. WINCHELL, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WHEEL AND GEAR REMOVER.
Application filed "June 28, 1922.
Be it known that I, ERNEST l VVINUHELL, a citizen of the lrl nitcd States, residing at Seattle in the county oi King and State-of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVhecl and Gear Removers of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an implement for removing gears, wheels, pulleys, and the like from tight fitting shafts, and the principal object of this invention is to providean implement oit'this character that can perform the work effectually and with great ease.
l or this purpose all parts of the imple- 'nient are made very substantial and it consistsmainly ot' a body with radiating arms,
from which are depending two or more gripping jaws or lingers intended to firmly hold the wheel or gear, and a driving bolt intended to push the shaft out of engagement with the gear or wheel.
Anotherobject of the invention is to fun nish an implement of this class; which is selfcentering at all times and which as a conse quenco operates to the best advantage, as
CJI
there will be no side strain on thcparts.
The reason -For this being,'that directly the implomenl' has been centered on thework to be operated upou the parts arcilirmly locked together to prevent any shifting of theparts.
The device is preferablymaimtactured in dil'lerent sizes, large and small, in accordance with the worlx' it has to perform, this work ranging from removal of hearings on small. generators and dynamos, to the removal of heavy fly wheels, pulleys, andthe like on large engines.
@no embodiment otthe invention lSililUS- trated in the accompanying drawings:
l igurc 1 shows a perspective view ot' the im plemen t;
l ig. 2 is an axial sectionthereof;
3 is a perspective view of -thebody portion of the implement;
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of some details. and u Fig. shows a transverse section of the ad j us ti ng nut.
The body member 9 otthe implementhas -acylindrical centerportion $10 from which radiate two. three or-more arms 11 which are integral with the central portion or rigidly secured thereon, :Each of these arms lfl is'provided witl'ntwo or moreuapertures 12 intended tocarry a pivotpin 13.5mm
Serial No. 571,455.
which is suspended a jaw or gripping finger 14: terminating at its lower end in a hook 15. The pivots 13 are removably secured in the apertures 12, so that each jaw 14; may be positioned further in or further out along its corresponding arm 11 on the body mem her. This shifting of the jaws 14- to different positions on the arms 11 is made for the purpose of adjusting the grip of the jaws for larger or smaller work.
In the smooth central bore 1.6, provided in the -body member 9, is revolubly seated an adjusting nut 17 having a thin collar 18 abuttingagainstthe underside of the body member and an upwardly directed hollow shank l9 engaging in the smooth borelG. Thelupper endofthc shank 19 extends above the top of the body member and isthreaded to engage .a wing nut 20, which retains the adjusting nut 17 in position in its seat. A setrscrew 21 is provided in the wing nut 20, by means of which :the wing nut may be clamped onthe shank 19 when so desired.
Ina body member 9 is provided. a perpondicular groove 22 running the entire length from top to l')()l'l0li'l thereof and intondedito Form a, guide tor a latch key 23, which held in position on the body momberhy means of acovcr plate 24- securcd on the three the'reoildn any suitable manner as, for'instance, by screws 25. This plate 2-ihas a longitudinal slot '26 through which extends a threaded pin 52. forming a part oi the latchlkey 23. This pin carries a thumb ut QP b means of which the position of thedatcli key23 in its guide 22 may be determined, so that when the koyzis inactive, the nut will hold it entirely concealed in the guide .22 in its upper position. When the latch'fkey 23 is :let down into the position indicated in Fig. 2. it engages between the teeth Q'QPI'OVh lPd (lI'Cllli'l'fOl'Gllillfilly on the thin collar 1.8 of the adjusting nut 17. in this manner rigidly locking the adjusting nut to tliebody member.
:Theshank 19 of the adjusting nut 17 is internally threaded for engaging a driving bolt 30 which is threaded along its entire length and provided with a head 31at its upper end adapted to be: gripped by a wrench. .The other end oi the driving bolt 30 is;rounded ias seenin Fig. 2, or it may at'tiiines beipointed for the purpose of firmlyen-gzaging with a shaft 32which has to be removed from a gear 33 held between the jaws 14.
llO
A hub 3lis also threaded on the driving bolt and is provided with lugs equally spaced aroundthe circumference ol the hub 34; and of the same number as the arius ll provided on the body niember 9. These lugs 35 are each connected by means of links 36 with one oi the gripping jaws it. These links are pivoted as at on the hub 3i 'and provided with openings 38 along the length for engaging with pivot pins 39 run ning through the respective la and held in position by means of cotter pins ll) in the same manner as the piv'otpins 13. These pivot pins 39 may be shifted inwards or outwards along the links 36 in accordance with the shifting of the pivot pins 13in the arms 11 of the body member in order to widen or narrow the grip of the jaws 1%.
The operation of the implement is as 7 21. The latch lrey 23 has previously been withdrawn from engagement with the teeth 29 in the adjusting nut so that the letter is free to turn in its seat in the body member. It will now be seen that through the threaded engagement between the adjusting nut 17 and the driving bolt 30 the latter will be lifted in the body member. As t re bolt also has threaded engagement with the hub 34-, this hub will partake in the upward movement of the driving bolt 30 and in this mannerdraw the aws 14- close together by means of the pull on the links 36, so that the hooks l5 will engage with the underside of the gear 83. As soon. as a tight grip between the jaws and the gear has been obtained, the latch key 23 is let down by loosening the thumb nut 28, so that the adjusting nut 17 will be locked to th'e body member 9. By means oi the wrench engag ing the head 31, the driving bolt '30 is now 7 screwed down in the adjusting nut 17 a nd the hub 3 L, both being stationary, and the lower end of the driving bolt will advance and exert a pressure against the end of the shaft 32 and remove the latter from the gear It will be evident that instead of the three arms and aws provided in the implement shown on the accompanying drawings, only two of these jaws may at times be supplied and in this case the jaws and arms will be placed diametrically opposite each other in the implement.- r V In case the shaft 32 should stick very hard in the gear 33, a blow may be applied tothc head 31 to start it, but in that case the set screw 21 should first be loosened to permit a partial unscrewing of the wing nut 2U on the shank 19 in thismanner permitting a limited axial movement of the adjusting nut l? with the driving bolt 50 in the body member.
l7 ring thus described what is claimed as new is:
