Application ledMay 12,
To UZZ whom it may concer/vt.'
Be itlznoivn that l, MAnviN G.,FLEM1NG, a citizen of the United States, residingV at Kansas City., in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas` have invented a cer-r tain new and useful Improvement in Type Cabinets, ot which the following is a specification. p
My invention relatesto improvements in type cabinets. Y
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel type cabinet adapted to hold type in compact form and for ready re# moval at one time of a number of type carried in holders. 4 A further object of my invention is to provide a type cabinet oit the kind described, whichis simple, cheap to make, durable, not liable to get out of order, which permits the easy insertion and lremoval of type, and which is adapted for easytransportation. Y
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel type holder adapted to hold a bunch ofltype in compact form and which Y can be quickly and easily filled emptied ottype. l
The novel features `of my inventionare hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing, which illustrates thc preferred embodimentv of my invention, y
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of myimproved cabinet. some of the compartments 4with or ,thereof being lilled.-
Fig. /2 is an enlarged top view, partly broken away, of my improved cabinet.
Fig. 3 is a reduced vertical sectional view on the line 3;-3 ot Fig. 2. V
Fig. 4 is aperspective view of a bunch of type shown mounted in one oat my improved holders.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved type holder. A
Similar' reference characters designate similar parts in the different views. I
The type cabinet a case comprising a horizontal base 1 to which is secured the lower end of a verticalV member 2, provided on opposite sides respectively with vertical grooves 3, which at their lower ends connect and register with transverse grooves 4 re` spectively, provided. in the upper side of the base 1. f.
5 designates vertical partition plates, the lower ends o?? which are respectively mount 1922. Serial No. 560,490.
ed in the grooves 4, and the reari edges of vertical compartments formed by thefplates Y 5 in connection lwiththe lbase 1 and Vvertical member 2. v:l'emovably fitted in-these compartments and adapted to ybe disposed therein one upon. the other, are U-shapedvv type holders 7, Figs. 4 and 5, each of which is adapted to contain a bunchotl type 8,.- the latter being mounted one upon the other between and transversely Ato the arms oit' the holders 7. lThe latter are adaptedl to be mounted one upon the other in the different compartments, with one setof arms dis-l posed across the openings 6, as shown in4 Figs1and2.. 5, For holding the partition plates 45 from vertical movement in the grooves 8, there, may be secured to the* .upper end of the member 2 a horizontal pla-te 9, which extends over the upper edges .of the plates 5, and which has the samefwidth as the thickness oit' the member 2. AFor convenience in transporting the cabinet, there maybe secured to the top of the platevv 9, a central handle `10.
For holding the platesio from moving outi Wardly in the grooves 3 and 4,`l`provide two horizontal plates 11, disposed at oppo-l site sides of the case and bearing against the outer sides ofthe adjacent platesa, adja' cent to the upper ends thereof. f Y
Two transverse bolts 12, each'p'ro-vided with a nut 13, extendthrough the plates 11, and hold the latter tightly clamped against the plates 5.
For Vcompleting the end compartments, l
there are provided twoV vertical channel plates 14, secured respectively tothe verti- 'm Y cal ends of the member 2. The flanges of the plates 14 extend inwardly and are spaced apart from the heads of Ythe adjacent plates 5. Y
The base 1 maybe supported in araised position by a rectangular wire frame having' two inverted U-shaped portions 15', secured to the under side of the'basev 1,v transversely thereto. Extending outwardly from the lower ends of the portions 15 are lateral arms 16 which respectively connect with the lower ends of the arms of tivo inverted U-shapedportions l?, tie'horizontal portions of Which are disposed longitudinally and. upon Which may be hung shaped holders'l'. n 4 l Y i in the operation ofi my invention, holders filled with type, are placed one above the other in their proper compartments, which Ymay be designated by charactersY corre sponding,- to the type contained in said Compartinents, which characters may be applied, as shown inY Fig. l, to the outer side of the adjacent plate'll, respectively in alinement with the openings or slots 6. 7
llVhen the *holders* 7 are slipped into the compartments, they are disposed With the' arms ofthe holders in the vertical planes respectively of the openings 6.
*theV holderlthus detached for usf When it is desired Yto vextract type 'from Vthe cabinet, a pointed instrument is inserted through the opening 6 of the compartmentV which contains the type desired, the instrument being inserted between the two uppermost holders 7. Upon then lifting the instrument, the uppermost holder 7 is raised 'at its upper end above the plates aand 9,
upon Which it can be grasped by the operator, and Wholly removed from the eabinet,
after Which the type may be removed from n desired. I `W1th my improved cabinet, nev type are st ored'in Compact space and in manner convenient for ready extraction a consider- Y able number at a time.
empty U- I nrieaaea ment and accessible throughsaid slot, sub` stantially as set forth. f Y
2. ln a type cabinet, case having. a plurality of parallel compartments, each open at its upper end and provided in its front Wall ivith a verticalslot, and type holders adapted to be removably rfitted one above the other in each ot'said compartments and accessible through and registering with the slot in said compartment wall, substantially as set Yorth. p f Y l 8. ln a typek cabinet, a case having a coin partmentopen at its upper end and provided in its front Wall with ka vertical slot and lU-shaped type holders removably fitted one upon the other in said compartment and accessible through and registering with said slot, substantially as set forth. Y
e. in a type cabinet, a case having` a conipartment open at one end and closed at'its ether'end and having a longitudinal opening,` extending from its closed end, shaped type holders removablyfitted one upon the other in said compartment, one
setof arms of said holders being disposed the rear ofV and wider than said opening,
substantially asset forth. i. n A
' ln a Vtype cabinet, a case having' a compartment open at one end'and 'closed at the other end and having a longitudinal opening extending from its` closed end, and U shaped type-holder removably fitted in said compartment and having one'porf its arms registering lwith said opening,jsub-` stantially as set forth.
6. ln a type cabinet, a case having a compartment open at its upper vend and closed at its lower end and having' a 'vertical Vfront opening'A extending from' its lower end, and a typeholder having a bottom portion for supporting type extendin, across said open-- ing, substantially as setV forth. p j
ln testimony whereof l have migned my name to this specification. Y
