ELMER` RILEY AND CLARENCE E. YUNCKEE, or DODGE crrx, KANSAS."y
-RACK Fon HOLDING cooKY-BoxEs,
Application filed April 25,
To all @li/wm t may concern Be it known that we, ELMER RILEY and CLARENCE F. YUNcxnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Dodge City, in the county of Ford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Racks for Holding Cooky- Boxes, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to racks for disn playing boxes or tins containing cookies and similar cakes and has for its object the provision of a` strong, durable and thoroughly ei'licient device of this character by means of which a plurality of such boxes or tins may be supported `in rows or tiers to Conveniently display the same and facilitate dispensing the contents thereof. i
The invention further aims toprovide a display rack, having 4a holder pivotally mounted for tilting movement thereon and provided with means for detachable engage ment with a box or tin, means being providedfor holding the lid of theV box in open position when the latter is tilted to permit the removalof the contents of said box.
The invention further vcontemplates the provision of a novel form of spring clamp adapted to engage the rear wall of the box and means carried by the holder and coacting with the front of said box for preventing displacement thereof with respect to the holder. f
A still further object is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, ldurability and efficiency..
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display rack constructed in accordance with the `present invention showing one of the boxes or tinstilted and the lid thereof supported in open position to permit the ready removal of the contents of the box;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the -lower portion of the rack;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective'view of one of the box holders detached showing the same in position on the supporting rod;
Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view -showing the means employed for securing the front end of the box in position on the holder; Y
Fig. 5 is adetail vertical sectional view showing the manner ofholdingthe lid Vof the box'in open position; 1 y
Fig. 6 isa similar view showing the man- Speci'cation of Letters Patent.v vPatented June 29, 1920.
1919. Serial N0. 292,594.-
Corresponding and like parts are referred v to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved rack comprisesa supporting frame including spacedl uprights or standards 5 connected by upper, lower and intermediate longitudinal bars or sills 6, 7 and 8 and corresponding end bars 9 to form upper and lower tiers for the reception of the boxes or tins to be displayed and indi' cated at 10. The lower and intermediate end bars 9 are vprovided with registering openings tojpermit the passage of longitudinally disposed supporting rods 11 the` lata ter having their opposite ends threaded for engagement with suitable clamping nuts 12.
Pivotally mounted'r for tilting movement on the rods 11 aresuitable box holders each comprising a flat `substantially rectangular plate 13 having its edges bent upwardly to form side flanges 14 adapted to bear against the side walls of the adjacent box or tin 10. Pivotally connected at 15 with thev rear edge of each plateilB'is a spring pressed clamping iange 16' adapted to bearV against pintlerod 19 of thehinges 15 with theirl free ends'bearing againstthe flange 16-and bottom of the plate 13 respectively, for normally and yieldably holding the retainin flange 16 infcontact withV the' box.
The holders are particularly adapted to form a support for paper cooky boxes of the l construction shown-1n our companioniapplication Serial No. 292,595 executed of even date herewith and as the' mechanical construction ofthe box forms the ,subject matter of said companion application, a detail description thereofv is deemed unnecessary, it
' being merely necessary to state that each box is providedwitha metallic display front20 having a laterallywextended finger piece 21 anda transverse recess 22. Referring back to the box holders, it will'be--noted'thatithe v projecting hook 25 adapted to enter the recess 22 in the display front 20 of the box and its rear end provided'with an eye 26.V One end'of a coil spring 27 is secured to the eye 26 while the other endthereof is anchored in any suitable manner'to the lower face of the plate 13, said spring serving to normally and yieldably-hold the hook 25 withinl the slot 22 with the pointed end of the hook impinging against orpiercing the paper or other material of which the body of the box is formed.` A
The box holders are preferably supported on the rod 11 by means of suitable loops or clips 28 fastened to the bottom of the plates 13 as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,
although-if desired said plates maybe rigidly secured to the rod and the latter journaled in the openingsin the end bars of the rack frame. The inner faces o f the lower and intermediate longitudinal bars 7 and 8 are preferably inclinedor beveled at 29 to form a firm bearing forvtheboxes when the latter are tilted and-also to permit said boxes to be supported at the desired inclination to conveniently expose the `contents thereof as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. A plu-V rality ofV said cookyv boxes will be supported onv the rack and arranged in rows or tiers and when a number of said boxes are thus supported suitable loops or keepers 30y will be attached to the lower longitudinal edges of the top' and intermediate side bars for the reception of springA tongues 31 mounted on the covers 32 of the-boxes. The function of theptongues 31` and keepers 30 is to hold the lids of the boxes4 in open position when the boxes are vltilted so as to' permit thecontents of theboxes to be readily dispensed without Vthe necessity of manually holding the lids of said boxes in open position when removingthe contents thereof. In using the rack the cooky boxes are positioned on the plates 13'of the holders and pressed laterally against the retaining ianges 16 so as to permit the finger piecesor ribs 21 on theboxes to fit beneath Vthe retaining flanges 23 with the hooks25 entering theV adjacent slots 22 and-in which position the spring tension of theretaining.flangesalwill cause the flanges to firmly grip thef rear wall of the box and prevent accidental displacement thereof. In `order to expose the contents of the boxesit is merely necessary to tilt said boxes forwardly and, downwardly until they rest on the inclined faces 29 of the supporting frame. As the boxes are tilted forwardly the hooks 3l on 'the lids 32 will engage the adjacent loops or keepers 30 and supportsaid lids in open position during removal of the contents of the boxes'. When the desired supplyV of cakes has been removed from any particular box the latter will return to normal or horizontal position by gravity, this being due to the fact that the supporting'rod 11 is arranged at one side of the center'of the rack. As the cake box is tilted rearwardly to normal position the Ahook 31 will be disengaged from the adjacent keeper 3 0 and thus allow the lid of the box to drop by grav-v ity to closed position.
In order to remove any desired box and permit replacement thereof by a filled box it is merely necessary to .release the catch 25 and press the retaining flange 16 outwardly when the box may be conveniently detached Veither inthe original packages or inthe usual' boxesor tins generallyV employed for this purpose. Y
