Description

D. R. SCHOONOVER CLOTHESLINE TIGHTENER Sept. 25, 192?. 1,469,? i2
Filed Oct. 13 1922 INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
DANIEL R. SCHOONOVEB, OF T XEDO, NEN YORK.
CLOTHESLINE TIGII'IENER.
Application filedOctober 13, 1922. Serial No. 594,325.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DANIEL R. Sorroow oven, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuxedo, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Clothesline Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a means for tightening a clothes line, and has for its object to produce an article of this character which can be stamped from a sheet of metal so that the same can be cheaply manufactured and marketed, and which will perform its functions in an easy, expeditious and accurate manner.
A further object is to produce a clothes line tightener comprising a body member having fingers adjacent one end around which the line is twisted when the body member is turned, means at its other end for engaging the line to prevent the air twisting thereof, means on one of the line engaging elements for supporting a clothes pin bag or the like, means at its other end for facilitating the manipulation of the device, and also providing a means whereby the device may be suspended from a support when not in use.
The drawing which accompanies and forms part of this application, illustrates a satisfactory embodiment of the improve ment reduced to practice, and wherein Figure l is a side elevation illustrating the device in use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the improvement.
as disclosed hy the drawing, the improvement is constructed from a single sheet of met 1 stamped or cut to provide an elongated body portion 1 which has one of its edges, adjacent to one of its ends provided and 3 respectively. Each finger, adjacent to its outer end is provided with an out with laterally extending spaced fingers 2 wardly directed foot extension 4: and 5 re- SPBQJlVQlY, the finger 2, below the foot 4 being formed with a ring portion 6. As disclosed in Figure 1 of the drawing, the clothes line is first inserted between the fingers 2 and 3 and the body 1 is turned to wind the clothes line around the fingers. The foot portions 4 and 5 prevent the coiled portion of the clothes line being moved off of the fingers.
At its opposite end, the body 1 has its edge provided with the fingers 2 and 3 formed with an extension which is bent upon itself to provide a substantially U-shaped tongue 7, and this tongue is designed to receive therein one of the taut leads of the clothes line 8. The body 1, on its edge opposite that provided with the tongue 7 is formed. with a ring extension 9, the same serving as a finger hold for manipulating the device in tightening the clothes line, and also serving as a means whereby to engage a hook or, nail so that the device can be suspended at a convenient place when not in use. The eye 6 serves as a suspending mean for articles used by'the laundress, as for instance, the same may suspend therefrom a bag containing the clothes pins. V
Having described the invention, I claim As an article of manufacture, a clothes line tightener stamped from a sheet of metal to include an elongated body having one of its edges adjacent one of itsends formed with spaced laterally extending fingers that terminate in outwardly directed feet, one of said fingers outward of the foot thereon be- I ing formed. with an eye, said body having its saic edge, adjacent its opposite end formed with a laterally arranged substantially U-shaped tongue and its opposite edge formed with an eye extensiomall as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony'whereof I afiix my signature.
DANIEL a. SCHOONOVER.
