Be it known that 1,;SAMUEL NEwMAiv,a citizen of; the United States, residing at certain new and useful I'mprovementslin Dental Absorbent-Roll Holders, of
V Mypresentinvention relates to improve ments in dental absorbentrollholders such as are used to hold rolls of cotton in posi tion to absorb saliva in oral operation.
I One of the objects of-my invention'is-to' at-the same time to hold the mouth open at any height, Another object of my invention is to arrange such a device so that the width may beadjusted, to suitthe mouth of Another. object of my invention is to providesuch an arrangement by which cotton rolls may be heldat either side of the gum on both the upper and lower jaws-simultaneously. i With theseiand other objects i n"view, my invention consists in the arrangements and constructions illustrated in the drawings, and more specifically pointed. out in' the appended claims. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows, one scale larger than actual size, one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section and F ig. 3 a side elevation of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, but very much enlargedjFig. 4 is a section and Fig. 5 a side elevationof an other fOI'IIl Ofi my invention.

Referring first to the form of my inven tion embodied in Figs. *1, 2 and: 3, the absorbent rolls R, which usually are made'up of absorbent cotton but may be of any other absorbent material, are pushed on the pins 10, which in the form illustrated, are two in. number, each arranged to be located at either side of the patientsgum; To each of the pins 10 is connected a member'll, and
-to each of the member's ll'areconnected a pair of posts 12, the? upper ends of which T pass into tubes 13, connectedto a saddle 14 arranged to contact with the oppositerjaw of the patient, as directly against a tooth asshown in Fig. 2. Within the tubes '13 and pressing against the uppenends of the post 12 are spiral springs 15"which normally push the'post 12 downward until the the bottom of the tube. h 1 r 1 With the construction 'just described,
which the desired extent and as he does so, the r spr1ngs15 willlh'old the. saddle 14 against f the cotton rollsR y-in place. If'desired, the f ment shown in Fig. 1;
projection on the end" thereof contacts cotton rolls i are impaled on the pins l0 :and thedevice-insertedin the mouthof thegpa tient with the rolls'j in the positions indi cate'd, The patient then openshis mouth to the-upper, jaw and. this, iii-turn, will hold SAMUEL WMAN, or mew-ya s, Y.
jaws of the-patient maybe held open by; V
clamping thepost'12 in the tube '13 at. any
desired position, this}clampinggbeingpro vided for, in the form illustrated, by [split-V ting the two outer :tubes 18, as at '16, :and
providing .a compressiomv nut 1 7i. threaded] on a, crew 18,*s0 that the split; portion of the tube may-be compressed'onthe. outer end of the-post 12'. If desired, a similanarrange--- ment;may be provided on, the other two posts also; 1
a pair of pins 20 are provided for the lower jaw and another pair of- ,pins 21 for the'up-' per jaw, absorbent rolls being mounted on In'the formillustratecl inFigsii and 5, L
these .pinsas before described. Each 'oi -thepins 20 is mounted on a member 22 and. each of the pins 21am membe1323. To the member 22'is connected a single post 24;, the-upper end oii-which slides in a tube ;25 providediwith a spring. 26 similar to that describedin the arrangementv shown inFig'.
1.. Similarly the member 23'. is prowided with-a post 27' sliding in a tube 28, provided with a -spiral spring 29. -'-The tube25; may be'split, as iat 30,2and provided with a compression' nut 31, operating in: the. manner described in connection with the arrange- Itbwill be obvious that, inqthe arrange ment sh0w'n,the pressure of the springs 2.6, 29 will hold the upper andv lower absorbent rolls in position, and that similarly the jaws of the patient may be held open any desired amount by'th'e use of the clamping nut 31.
,7 In some cases, itisdesirable to be able to adjust the width of the holding device, and I have "shown such an arrangem'ent inn-cons nection with the. lform 'illustrated Figs. 4: and 5, though'it will be'understood that a similar arrangement may be modification shown .inFig; 1.
To accomplish this end, Iprovide a tube I 32 which, .inthe. form illustrated, is conapplied to the. I,
nected at right-angles to the tube 28, and a post 32 connected to the tube'25, having its end: inserted in the tube '32. A spring 34:
tends to move the tube away from the tube 28. A' clamping nut 35-is provided to. lock the post 33 in any desired position in relation tothe tube 34;. ll ithxthe arrangement-shown, the device maybe adjusted laterally so as to space the absorbent rolls crosswise of the gum at the correct distance, in' accordance with'the width of the patie'ntrs mouth.
Willbeunderstood that the arrangements which I have shown are merely illustjrative, and that the details of such" constructions may be varied within wide limits.
