EDWIN A. OSBORNE, OF"'CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING-STOVES.
Speciiication forming pari of Letters Patent N0.1l16,840, dated January 27, 1874; application filed November 22, 1873. Y
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, EDWIN A. OsnoENE, of lharlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which i the following is a specification: A
The invention will rst be fully described,
and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a stove with my improved draft attachment, showing the arrangement of the conductor when passing through the door and into the room below; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing the conductor arranged as a box resting on the box.
B is the ash-pit, which is deeper at the back than at the front part, to prevent the ashes rolling forward. C is an opening in the bottom of the ash-pit at the front part, with a collar, a, cast around it, for receiving the pipe through which the air is admitted to support combustion in the stove. D is the pipe fitting A G11/ the collar at the opening @,@through which the air is` admitted into the stove. E is a damper or covering for the opening at wlby which the supply of air is regulated. This damper has on the upper part of it an elevation, b, to prevent the falling of ashes or coals into its vent at nd to the same is attached a thin narrow handle, F, which extends from theinside of the ash-pit through anarrow opening in the front. This is all cast in one piece.
D extends through an opening in the oor J, `corresponding with the position of the front of p the stove, and at the lower end below the floor is a wicker-work of wire, K, with a tin or sheet- Iron bottom, L, as a sparkfarrester. '.lhe covering for the ash-pit is a common movable cover.
Instead of the pipe D extending through an opening in the ioor, it may connect with a triangular box, D', with the base resting on the floor, and instead of the opening being cut in the floor for thepipe, the iioor may simply be perforated with auger-holes d, under the trif angular box, through which the air is received to support combustion, and instead of the wicker-work of wire on the outside, simply a sheet of wicker-work of wire, O, may be fastened across the opening in the inside of the triangular box, one or two inches from` the door, as a spark-arrester. I y
The loweredges of the triangular box are slightly turned ont, so as to tit snugly on the Hoor, and may be tacked down to the door.
The object of theinvention is to obtain the supply of air outside the room to be heated, y
thus prevent-ing currents in the room, and preserving the uniformity of the temperature, and
also requiring less fuel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-
