Description

Sept. m, 3923; mamas w. B. HODGES ROTARY BIN 7 Original Filed April 30. 1921 5 z n- H Patented Sent. 18, 1923..
I V WILBUR B; HODGES, O-F BROWNSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
RQTARY BIN.
Applicat 'on filed April- 30,. 1921, Serial No. 4:65;766.v Renewed: July 30, 1928.
To all whom it concern Bait known that I, VVILBUR B. Honors, a
citizen ofthe United. States, residing at Brownsville, in the county. of Marlboro and. State of South Carol-ma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Rotary Bins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
This inventionfrelates to certain improvements in rotary bins and, has relation more particularly to a device of this general char- :acter especially designed and adapted for insects and against moisture.
use in connection with groceries and kindred commodities, andit is an object of the invention to provide av novel and improved device of this general' cliaracter divided into compartments: adapted to: receive different commodities and whereby such commodities are effectively protected fagamst dust and F urthermore-itis an object of the invention to provide. a novel. and improved devicerof this. general character particularly designed foruse inconnection with a gro cerylstore and which adapted to contain differentcommodltles and, in a manner ,whereby the possibility of nixingsaid com n odities is substantially eliminated.
Another object or the invention is: to prov1de a novel and improved device of this general. character adapted for use inconf :nection with commodities to be sold' in bulk be effected with a minimum of effort on the limiting myself to this particular configpart of the salesman.
n An. additional object of the invention provides. anovel and improved device of this general character embodying a receptacle supported for rotation and wherein said receptacle is. permanently divided into a plurality of compartments together with means whereby each of said. compartments may be the entrance within the receptacle of dust,
insects and the like.
The invention consists in the detail of c0nstruction and in the combination. and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved rotary bin whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will hereinafter more fully be set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now'proceed to describe the same with reference to the accome panyingdrawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in topplan illustrating a bin constructed in ac-: cordance with an embodiment of my invention with the movable shutter or lid inclosed position; a
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is aview in top plan of the device as herein disclosed with the counter, and the shutter. or lid in a partially open position;
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 41 of Figure 2 witha removable partition in applied position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing 0 denotes a fragmentary portion of a counter provided in one of its marginal portions, preferably the inner marginal portion thereof, with a cut out portion or recess 1, herein disclosed as semicircular in form, although I do not wish to be understood as uration.
Secured to the underface of the counter (l inwardly of, but in relatively close proximity to the central portion of the recess 1-, is a bearing 2 in which is engaged the reduced' end portion 3 of a vertically disposed shaft 4. The opposite end portion of the] shaft 4 is engaged within the bearing 5 secured to the floor F or other surface.
Rotating with the shaft 4 is a receptacle R herein disclosed as cylindrical in form, with its upper end open and terminating in relatively close proximity to the counter C. The diameter of the receptacle R is such as to cause the same to underlie the recess 1, but not extending beyond the inner margin of the counter C or that marginal portion of the counter C provided with the pen The shaft 4: has its lower portion disposed through the axial center of the bottom 6 of the receptacle R, and the portion of the bottom 6 surrounding the shaft 4 is provided with the hub 7 directly above the bearing 5. Interposed between the bearing 5 and the hub 7 are the antifriction mem-' bers 8, so that the shaft 4 together with the receptacle R may be rotated with a minimum of frictional resistance.
Intersecting the space between the shaft 4 and the peripheral wall 8 of the receptacle R are the permanent partitions 9 herein disclosed as four in number, and substantially equidistantly spaced. The partitions 9 divide the receptacle R into a pluralityof compartments and each. of the compartqments may be subdivided upon the application therein of a removable partition 10.. Each of the compartments between the par-' titions 9 is provided with the guidew'ays 11. to receive a partition 10,; one of said guide-V A 'waysextending lengthwise of the shaft 4 and the second guideway being carried by the peripheral wall 8 in radial alignment with the first named guideway.
Disposed over the upper or open end of the receptacle R is a cover A, the reduced portion 3 of the shaft 4 extending through the axial center of said cover A. The cover A is nonrotatable, and as herein disclosed,"
7 said cover A is heldagainst rotation by a portion 15 is defined by a depending flange V 16 which overlaps the upper end portion of the receptacle R.
coacting with the cut away portion or 7 entrance opening 15 of the cover A is a shutter or lid 17 of'a size to close the cut away portion or opening 15. The shutter or lid 17 as herein disclosed is in the segment of a circle and its apex portion has disposed V therethrough the reduced portion 3 of the shaft 4: whereby the shutter or lid 17 is supported for free swinging movement in opposite" directions. The outer or arcuate margln of the shutter or lid l7 is defined by a dependingflange18 overlying the ad-V Vjacent or upper portion of the receptacle R, Extending upwardly from the shutter or lid 17 is a knob 19'or the like, whereby desired swinging movement may be imparted to the shutter or lid 17; Y
' In practice, each of the compartments of the receptacle R is adaptedto contain a de- 7 sired commodity, preferably 'in'bullg and in effecting a sale of any one of the par-1 ticular commodities itis only necessary to rotate the receptacle R until the compartment of the receptacle containing the" desired commodity is positioned substantially below the cut out portion or opening 15in the cover A, whereupon theshut'ter or lid 17 is swung into open position} The shutter or lid 17 maybe swung into open position, if preferred,.before the re-{ ceptacle R 'is rotated to gain acces's'within the desired compartment 7 off the container; 7 From the foregoing description it is thought to be-obvious that a rotary bin constructed in accordance with' my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility'with which it may be assembled and operated,
and it will'also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from theprinciples and spirit thereof and forthis reason I do J not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and forma tion of the several parts herein 'showfn in carrying out my invention in cept as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a counter pro vided with a recess in a marginal portion practice ex 7 thereof, a rotary receptaclepositioned be low the counter and extending below, the
recess of the counter,"the upper "face of the receptacle being open, .a nonrotatable cover coacting with the open end of the receptacle, said cover beingprovided with an opening topermit access within the frece p tacle and means for closing saidopening. In testimony whereof I hereunto. affixmy signature.
' WILBURV B. Hon a's."
