LOCKED RAZOR.
Application filed April 29, 1922. Serial No. 557,262.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIAN W. FRETWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locked Razors, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my said invention is the provision of 'a locked razor-i. e., a razor so constructed that its blade is locked against removal and against surreptitious use by servants. Manifestly a razor characterized as indicated may be placed in the 'hands of an insane man for legitimate use without liability of the patient being able to remove the blade and use the same in a suicidal effort. Also, a razor of the kind stated may be left in his room by the owner without locking means being preferably controlled by a key to be carried by the owner, and manipulation of such key being absolutely necessary in order to dispose the blade for use. After use of the razor the key is introduced and manipulated -to put the blade and the.
razor as a whole out of commission, and the key is then carried away by the owner. Another object of the invention is the provision in a razor characterized as set forth, of a flexible blade provided with a multiplicity of closely arranged apertures adjacent to each of its edges so that in the event of an insane person seeking to pick at the blade with a view to removing the same, the blade will be broken into fragments and rendered unfit for use.
. My improvements are designed more particularly for embodiment in-a certain well known type of safety razor, but I desire it distinctly understood that it is within'the purview of my invention to embody the improvement in a razor of any type, it being within the purview of my invention to combine any kind of razor blade with means for locking the blade so as to preclude use of the razor by any one except the owner or a person having authority over the razor.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described anddefinitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification 1 Figures 1 and 2 are sections at right angles to each other taken longitudinally through a well known type of safety razor constructed in accordance with my inven-. tion. t
Figure 3 comprises disassembled elevations of parts embraced in the said razor together with an elevation of the key for controlling the razor.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a blade of flexible character, weakened in accordance with my invention for the purpose indicated.
Similar numerals of. reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. 1
The blade 1 illustrated s of the transversely flexible kind with duplex sharpened edges 2. The blade is also shown as prov vided with a central aperture 3 and other apertures 4. They multiplicity of minute apertures 5 in the blade 1 as shown in Fig ure 4 may be employed or may be altogetheromitted without affecting the major portion of my invention. I prefer, however, to employ the said minute portions 5 inasmuch as they impart to the blade the capacity, of
readily breaking into fragments in the event of an insane person working at the edges of the blade in an attempt to remove the same from the remainder of the razor.
In addition to a transversely flexible blade, the razor shown comprises a tubular handle 6, a guard 7 with fingers 8 fixed to one end to the handle 6, a blade clamp ng cap 8 to which is fixed a shank 9 threaded at 10, and a locking member 11 slidable and rotatable-about its axis in the handle 6. Appropriately-secured in the heel end of the handle -6 is a member 12, a portion 13 with a key seat 16. The said key seat is for cooperation with the reduced end 17 of the key 18, Figure 3, which key 18 is provided with an appropriate handle 19. Theblade clamping cap shown'is provided in addition to the stem 9 with studs 20, said 'studs 20 being designed to occupy apertures 21 in the guard 7 for the ordinary well known purpose.
It will be apparent from the drawings that when the'blade 1 is positioned as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the razor cannot be used nor can the blade 1 be removed. Toput the razor into condition for-use it is necessary to introduce the key 18 through the tubular member 12 and into engagement with the locking member 11 about its axis through the medium of the key until the transversely flexible blade 1 is reduced to a subsequently flat state and so that its edges protrude sufficiently far beyond the longitudinal edges of the clamping cap 8 forshaving purpose. After use of the razor the owner or a keeper having effort over the razor introduces the key 18 and by turning the member 11 re turns the parts to the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2, and then takes the key away with him.
When it is desired to clean the razor the member 11 is manipulated through the me dium of the key 18 to a sufficient extent to permit of the removal of the cap 8 and the blade 1, and then after the cleaning operation the said blade and cap are replaced, and the member 11 is adjusted through the medium of the key to position the parts as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Notwithstanding the capacity of function ascribed to my improvement, it will be readily appreciated from the foregoing that a I razor of the type indicated embodying the invention is simple and inexpensive in construction and is calculated to last quite as long as an ordinary ra'zor of corresponding t I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced inthe present and preferred embodimen of my invention in order to impart a in clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I
do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters-Patent, is V 1. A locked safety razor comprising a hollow handle carrying a guard, a clamping cap havin a stem, a transversely flexible blade on t e stem and interposed between the guard and cap, and a locking member completely disposed and operable in the hollow handle and engaged with the stem of the clamping cap to secure the blade in an idle position and against removal and provided entirely within the hollow handle with a key portion tobe engaged with a key separable from the razor.
2. A locked safety razor comprising a hollow handle carrying a guard, a clamping cap having a stem, atransversely flexible blade on the stem and interposed between the guard and cap, and a locking member disposed and operable in the hollow handle and engaged with the stem of the clamping cap'to secure the blade in an idle position and against removal, the said locking member being key controlled, and the key being removable from the hollow handle and separable from the razor.
n3. In a razor, the combination of a tubular handle with a guard at one end, said guard having a central aperture and other aper tures, a clamping cap opposed to the guard and having a stem extending through the central aperture thereof and into the tubular handle and provided with a threaded por-, tion, a tubular member secured in the heel end of the handle, a locking member movable about its axis in the tubular handle and having a kerf or socket in its heel end and also having a threaded socket receiving a portion of the cap stem, and a transversely flexible blade apertured to receive the stem.
and studs on the cap and interposed between the said cap andthe guard, said looking member being adapted to be operated by a key, and-the said key being separable from the razor.
V at. As a new article of manufacture, a transversely flexible razor blade having a sharpened edge and also having adjacent to said edge a multiplicity of minute, closely arranged apertures. g
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JULIAN w. FRETWELL.
