Be it known that I, AWILLIAM W. Bonns,-
a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bead Threading or Display Boxes, `of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovements in display boxes, and
pertains more especially to boxes which are capable of multitudinous uses as for instance the display of merchandise of various characters; ladies work boxes, bead threaders and toilette boxes, as willbe more fully hereinafter set forth in greater detail.
The primary object of the invention isf to provide a box struct-ure wherein the box proper is equipped with a cover serving 4to protect the contents against dirt, dust and varying climatic conditions; which cover upon removal serves as a means for rotatably supporting the box so that the contents of the latter can be selectively brought to lie directly in front of the user so as to be more readily accessible for pun pose of inspection or removal.
A further object of the invention is tot provide a structure wherein latching means is provided to hold the box against rotation following movement thereof, and to easily release the box and allow of free rotation,
without the separate. operation' or manipuf.
lation of the latching means.
Still further, the invention aims to provide a box cover having a finger engagingv knob to allow of-easy removal of the cover, which knob also forms a journal for rotat ably supporting the box.
Still further *the invention aims to provide' i Figure 3, is a top plan view of a box having partitions therein;
Figure 4, is a top plan view of tl1e`invention .as applied ito a vbead threader;
vFigurenmis a section on line 5 5 of .Fig-
ure 4; A
gigure 6is a side elevation of Figure 4,
. Figure 7, is a reduced top planviewfofi- `the cover. i i
l,In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a box 1 is provided having acover 2 which parts may be made of tin or other suitable nia-terialsuch -as glass, pottery, Celluloid, silver, nickel, or wood. `Theboxfis formed with a central struck-out concavp-convex part 3 forming a downwardly facing socket, while the cover is formed with a similar struck-out part 4 forming kan up;
wardly projecting combined hand knob and journal. For the purpose of facilitating gripping of the knob b-y the fingers same .may be `formed with opposed finger-receivv ing depressions 5 as depicted in `the draw- Normally thecover seats on the` box lso as to protect the contents of the latter, and when it is desired to expose *the contents the cover is removed and the box superimposed thereon with the knob 4 projecting into the socket 3 as illustrated in Figure l of the drawings. For the purpose of holding the lbox in a true horizontal plane and for.- .allowing same to be more freely rotated, the coverv may be'provided` with a 'circular series of small spaced struck-outl teats k6 having rounded domes that engage the under face of the box bottom and functionas ranti-friction bearings.
The invention also provides meansr to latch the box against free rotation by holdingvsame in anyvselected position to which the box may be rotated and accordinglythe vbottom of the box isprovided with a latch formed by al circular or ring likedepression or groove 7, with the central portion within the groove bowed upwardly to forma downwardly facing keeper 8 which receives one lof the teats 6 and by frictional engagement therewith holds the box against rotation. Theweight of y thebox vcontents will obviously exert sufIicien-t pressure to cause the keeper to friotionally enga-ge against the teatso as to effectively latch the box, while still permitting the box to be rotated with the expenditure of but slight force. The invention proposes use ofthe box for all purposes which ordinary boxes are capable of: use for,y forinstance byvusingpartitions or division plates 9 of any number as depicted in Figure 3, the box may be used to contain toilet sets o rarticles,- ladiessewi'ngor ,em-- broidery sets, or confectionery, the box serving both to display the 'contents'when' on sale and to thereafter be used by the purchaser in preserving or storing such con-A tents.
AS illustrated in Figurel, the box vis pro vided ywith. a domelike filler 10 upon which V`Yvarious artioles'linay be suitably 4support- :ed for display bythe merchant. Vstance watches fand other articles of, jew
i. elry; druggistsY supplies such as ltooth n:brushes,pipes and cigar or' cigarette holdarranged and ldisplayed onifthe filler.
' rim l1 'of thebox'is vertically slitted at 12 'andat regularfintervals to admit a needle,
a preferably YwoodenA block 13, secured `by .sli'ellac beinggarranged within thejbo'x and i "provided with a series of spaced curved wells y14 which open through the block periphery,
turbing the beadsin the other wells. Inf' Iuse,"'tlie box is rotated to bring the beads in Ithe desired well in front of the user, where- `1`-the wells'having enlarged curved upperends l'ii'wliicli are of downwardly converging format-ionl so as to direct they beads downwardly. The center of the block has a large circular compartment 16 for storing beads. As
I"shown lin `Figure 7 the toplias a pouring Aliole'l, which can be turned to register' with the various wells to enable the beads thereof to be emptied'tlierefrom without dis-L upon'the needle is thrust into the slot. of
'that well to pick up or thread a bead thereon.i the needle being finally moved upn'fardly vuntil out of the slot,all as more particularly Vdescribed in my Patent No., 1,417,713 ofv May 30, 19:22.
It is however to be expresslyunderstood j that the inventionis susceptible of all of fthe various uses to which display boxes andV article containers and the'like are capable of, land accordinglytlie recited i'nstances'of use are to vbe considered in the light of ex` yamples yand not exhaustive enumeration of '66 allpossible uses to which the invention may be' put.
' Whatfisx'claimed is: l "1'. 1n a box, a'b'ody having a downwardly facing socket formed in4 its bott-'o m, acover "viffor the boxhaving a'knob extending. up-` 'into the socket so as to rotatably support vthe body with the bottom thereof resting on said bearings, and a latch integral with fthe bottom'fof; the;v body and `having a socket for receiving and frctionally engaging one -oftlie:bearings to hold the body against rotation.
