Description

G. B. BERGEN PENCIL Filed NOV. 27 1920 Ill/41 Patented Sept. 4,1923.

GEORGE B. BERGEN, OF MILWAUKEE; SUONSIN.
PENCIL.
. Application filed November 27, 1920. Serial No. 426,836.
ticularly to a novel, cheaply constructed. pencil having many advantages not present in those heretofore "suggested. One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a pencil which may be very cheaply constructed and in'which the operating mechanism is of relatively extreme simplicity.
A further object is to provide actuating means located in the side ofthe pencil as distinguished from in the end. In the latter case much complication results all of which is avoided and ample opportunity is afforded forthe mounting of a lead container and an eraser.
A further object is to so construct the encil body as to provide means whereby the ongitudinal axle bending may be formed without the necessity for longitudinal drilling. In pencils having wood bodies this is a source of great manufacturing ditficulty and it is avoided in my construction by very simple means.
The invention will be better understood by reference tothe accompanying drawings,
wherein,
. Fig. -1 is a side view of a pencil constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view showing the operating position of the parts;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the operasing catch in position to a\ivance the lea 2 Fig. 4 is a plan view, and,
Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views on the lines 55, 6-6, respectively, of Fig. 2.
In thedrawings it will be seen that the pencil includes a body ortion 10, which may advantageously be ormed of wood, a metallic point 11, a lead container 12, and an eraser 13. In preparing the body for the reception of the operatingparts, I first form a longitudinal saw-cut 14, which is of a depth less than the radius of the body, and a second saw-cut 15, located at the axes of the body and of less width than the first cut..
The second saw-cut may well be of rectangular cross section and of asize substantially fitting a similarly shaped plunger'or rack 16. The rack, as shown in Fig. 2, is provided with teeth or serrations 17 on its upper sur face adapted to be engaged by a resilient pawl 18, secured at 18, to an arm. 20. The arm is pivoted to a retaining member 19, of U-shape in cross section, the pin 18* serving as a pivot for the arm. The arm is prowhich fit snugly between the upstanding sides of themember 19. The body may be cut away atf22, to permit of engagement of the finger nail with the point 23 of the arm.
It will be seen that the bottom-portion of the U-shaped member underlies the plunger 16 and that when the plunger is in place the arm and attached pawl cannot be removed. The saw-cut 14 is filled by suitable strips 24, the outer surfaces of which. conform to the I outline of the pencilbody. A space is left at awl vided with depending side members 21,
upwardly on the rack. Upon pressing the arm the plunger is advanced correspondingly. If it is desired to retract the plunger or to disengage it from the actuating mechanism,th'e arm is swung upwardly to an extent sufiicient to disen go the pawl from the rack. Upon removing the threaded tip Thereafter the actuating mechanismmay be easily removed. a v
I claim: 1. In a pencil, the combination of a body having a longitudinal axial opening, a rack 11, the plunger will drop of itsown. weight.
adapted to function as a plunger mounted in the opening, a U.-shaped pawl-support mounted in the side of the body, and a pawl pivoted insaid support and adapted to engage the rack to effect the advance thereof.
2. In combination a pencil body having a longitudinal axial opening and a side opening'communicating with the axial opening a toothed plunger mounted in the axi opening, a U-shaped member mounted in the side opening, and a spring-actuated pawl mounted. on said U-shaped member and adapted to effect the advance'of the plunger. 3. In combination a pencil body having an axial opening and a side opening at a point substantially midway between the ends of the pencil, a rack mounted in the axial opening, a retaining member mounted in the side opening and having a portion underlying said rack, and a spring-actuated pawl mounted on said retaining member and adapted to elfect the advance of the rack.
4. In combination a pencil body having an axial opening and a side opening at a point substantially midway between the ends of the pencil, a rack mounted in the axial opening, a retaining member mounted in the side opening and having a portion under lying said rack, and a spring-actuated pawl mounted on said retaining member and adapted to effect the advance of the rack, the retaining member and pawl being held in the side opening solely by the rack.
5. In a pencil, the combination of a body having an axial opening and a side opening V shaped member and adapted to oscillate incommunicating therewith, a rack mounted in the axial opening, a 'U-shaped member mounted in the side opening and adapted to underlie the rack, an arm pivoted to the U- an'arc outside of the limits of the pencil body, and a spring-actuated finger movable I with the arm. and adapted to engage the rack to effect the advance thereof.
6. In a pencil, the combination with the body thereof, of means including a plunger for actuating a lead, said body being. promemes;
ed normally to lie flush with the body, and
tension means carried by the lever adjacent its pivoted end adapted with each swinging movement of the lever to engage the plunger to propel the same longitudinally through the pencil, substantiallyas described.
8. In combination with a pencil, a toothed plunger, means forguiding the plunger and a lead in advance thereof in longitudinal movements through the pencil, and ,means for propelling the plunger comprising a pivoted element having spring means adapted for resilient engagement with the plunger teeth, said means being moved lengthwise of the pencil with each oscillation of the element to thereby propel the plunger, lon t udinally of the pencil, substantially. as 5 scribed.
Signed at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this 15th day of November, 1920.
