Referring now to the drawings in detail, this dry shaver includes a casing comprised of two complementary sections I and I2 and adapted 3 and 14 and the offset portions 42 are fastened to the front ends of the sections I0 and I2 by screws 46, and it is a feature of this invention that the cutter'h'ead shield 38 covers these screws 43 and 46 as well as the remaining portions of the front end of the internal mechanism of the shaver.
An operating handle 48 is pivoted upon the spacer sleeve 20 secured between the frame members I4 by a pair of the screws I6 and the handle includes an arcuate bifurcated arm 52, which has a spacer sleeve 54 secured by a screw 50. A connecting rod 56 is pivoted on the sleeve 54 and extends rearwardly for'pivotal connection, as at 58, with the disk-shaped member 60 carried by a sleeve bearing 62 freely rotatably mounted on the transverse shaft 64. The member 60 may be constructed with an outer thin disk plate 66 to house a driving mechanism having a pair of V laterally disposed plate frame members I4. These frame members I4 are held together at the front end of the mechanism by screws I6 and at the rear end of the drive mechanism the frame members I4 are held together by a screw or bolt I8 and a complement of spacer sleeves 20 and 22 are associated with the screws I6 and I 8 to maintain the frame members I 4 properly spaced apart. The casing sections I0 and I2 are rabbeted marginally as at 24 and the rear ends of the casing sections are formed with internally disposed grooves 26 adapted to receive lugs 28 secured to the rear end of the drive mechanism and adapted to be received in the grooves 26 when the shaver is assembled thus holding the rear end portions of the casing sections together. In the embodiment illustrated, the lugs 28 are apertured to receive the screw I8 and the lugs are disposed between the frame members I4 and the sleeve 22. The front end portions of the casing sections I0 and I2 are reduced, as at 30, and the reduced portions are apertured at the front ends thereof to receive a block portion 32 of the cutter head generally indicated by the numeral 34. The cutter head block is held in position within the reduced portions 30 by a thumb screw 36 and a cutter head shield 38 fits over the cutter head 34 and is provided with dissimilar wings 40 adapted to fit snugly within correspondingly shaped dissimilar recesses in the sides of the casing sections I0 and I2, so that the shield will always be placed upon the shaver in the same position.
The frame members I4 terminate at the front end in inwardly offset portions 42 which are .secured to the reduced portions 30 of the casing sections I0 and I2 by screws 46 shown in Figures also carried by the sleeve bearing 62, and an internally ratcheted gear wheel 68 is coaxially mounted with the member 60 and this ratchet gear assembly may be filled with light grease to give silent operation. The member 60 carries a spring biased pawl 69 which engages successively with ratchet teeth II on the gear wheel 68, as best illustrated in Figure 4, while this gear wheel 68 is in continuous mesh with a pinion I0 driving a second gear Wheel I2 -mounted upon another shaft I4. Another pinion I6 in continuous mesh with the gear wheel I2 drives a third gear wheel I8 rotatably mounted upon a third shaft 80, and the third gear wheel I8 drives still another pinion 82 which is rigidly connected to a flywheel 84 by means of a sleeve bearing 86, best illustrated in Figure '7.
The groove 88 is formed in the flywheel 84 by providing a recess on one side thereof and mounting an eccentric disk 90 within this recess. A rocker arm 92 is forked at one end as at 94 and provided with shoes 06 frictionally engaging the disk 90 and this rocker arm is press fitted on a sleeve 91 pivoted upon a transverse shaft 98 and is provided with a forwardly extending portion I00 to engage a slot in a cutter I02 in the cutter head 34. The cutter head will also include a hair guiding member with a multiplicity of slots as indicated, while the cutter I02 will be biased forwardly against the member I04 by a plurality of spring biased balls I06 adjustably mounted in the cutter head 34, the detailed construction of this cutter head being thought immaterial in this application.
The operating handle 48 isprovided with a longitudinally disposed superficial recess I08 adapted to receive the finger tips of at least some of the fingers of an operators hand, and the handle will be biased to pivot away from the easing of shaver by a, helical spring IIO mounted coaxially on the sleeve 20 and having its ends contacting the contiguous portion of the frame I4 (such as one of the inwardly offset portions 42) and the handle, in a manner which will be well understood without further description. The handle must be locked in inoperative position adjacent to the casing when the shaver is not being used, and a, saddle shaped detent H2 is provided on the forward end of the handle for this purpose. The detent II2 has a pair of lateral flanges or arms I I4 and a longer more centrally disposed arm H6, all of plate character and the detent upper surface will preferably be transversely grooved to improve the ease with which the same may be moved by the thumb of an operator. The detent is secured to the handle by a centrally arched bracket II8 secured to the underside of the detent and enclosing a transversely disposed fulcrum member I20 which is preferably raised'above the adjacent surface of the handle 48. The handle d3 will be apertured to accommodate the bracket H8 on each side of the fulcrum member E20. The arm I I6 is provided with a hook element i22, positionally and dimensionally arranged to coact with a hook element I24 comprising an inwardly turned lug on one of the frame members Is. The arm H6 carried by the detent is slotted as at I26 to allow the detent to move with the handle without interference with the lug I24 when the detent is in unlocked position, and the arcuate bifurcated arm 52, on the corresponding side thereof, is also slotted as at 28. A leaf spring I30 is secured as by a screw I 32 to the slotted side of the arm 52 and a portion of this spring extends into frictional contact with one surface of the arm H6, as indicated at I34 in Figure 13. A ball IE or any other suitable knob-like projection, is provided on the arm H5 for selective engagement in a pair of depressions I38 in the spring portion i3 1, this selective engagement corresponding with the positioning of the detent in handle locking position and in unlocked position. It should be carefully noted that the portion of the detent H2 adjacent to the part of the handle 48 grasped by the hand of the operator will be tilted toward the handle when the detent is in unlocked position.
The operation of this invention will be clearly understood from a consideration of the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and in connection with the drawings. Obviously all the objects reacted are amply achieved by this invention and further description would appear unnecessary.
Variations from the embodiment described in this application may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of this invention and the scope of this invention should be determined only by a proper interpretation of the terms used in the sub-joined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A hand operated dry shaver comprising a casing having two complementary hollow sections, a drive mechanism on a frame mounted within the casing and having an operating lever handle extending outside said casin said sections having internal oppositely disposed flanges at the rear end of said casing and said frame having members engaging said flanges .to hold the sections together at the rear end of the casing,
said sections having reduced forward end portions, means securing said reduced portions together, a shaver head securable to said reduced portions and operably connected with said mechanism, and a head shield snugly fitting upon said sections and covering said securing means.

4. A hand operated dry shaver including a driving mechanism on a frame, an operating handle pivoted on said frame and having an arm, a member rotatably mounted on the frame and carrying a pawl, a coacting internally ratcheted gear wheel rotatively mounted on said frame coaxially with said member, a connecting rod operatively connecting said arm with said member, a cutter operating rocker arm pivoted on said frame, a flywheel mounted in said frame and having an eccentrically mounted disk, said rocker arm having a fork frictionally and operatively engaging diametrically opposite sides of said disk, reduction gearing connecting said flywheel with said gear wheel and a spring biasing said handle in one direction.
5. In a dry shaver having a frame and a pivoted operating handle with a hand grip portion, lock means for the handle comprising a transversely disposed fulcrum member on the handle, a saddle shaped detent pivoted on said fulcrum member and having a hook element adjacent the pivotal connection of the handle, a coacting hook element on said frame, a leaf spring secured to said frame with a portion of the spring frictionally engaging said detent for releasibly holding said detent selectively in handle locking and unlocked positions, the portion of said detent adjacent said hand grip portion of the handle being depressed against the hand grip portion when in said unlocked position.
6. In a shaver of the character described in claim 1 and wherein one longitudinal edge of the casing is shaped to fit the palm of a hand, and said operating handle is disposed on the opposite edge of the casing and has a longitudinally disposed superficial recess to receive the finger tips of an operators hand.
'7. A hand operated dry shaver including a frame and an operating handle and a lock to hold the handle in retracted position comprising a saddle transversely pivoted on the handle and a detent on said saddle to engage a portion of said frame when the handle is in retracted position and said saddle is pivoted to one position.
8. A hand operated dry shaver including a driving mechanism on a frame, an operating handle pivoted on said frame and having an arm, a member rotatively mounted on the frame and carrying a pawl, a coacting internally ratcheted gear wheel rotatively mounted on saidframe coaxially with said member, a connecting rod operatively connecting said arm with said member, a cutter operating rocker arm pivoted on said frame, a flywheel mounted in said frame and having an eccentrically mounted disk, said rocker arm having a fork frictionally and operatively engaging diametrically opposite sides of said disk, reduction gearing connecting said flywheel with said gear wheel and a spring biasing said handle in one direction, said flywheel having an axial recess on one side thereof and larger than said disk, said disk being within said recess and said fork having flanges laterally extending into the groove defined between the periphery of the disk and the adjacent portion of the flywheel.
