Description

Aug. 28, 1923. I 1,466,378
F. M LAUGHLIN I BIT ATTACHMENT FOR AUGERS Filed April 18 1921 Patented Aug. 28, l923.
UNITE STAS FRED MOLAUGHLIN, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS.
BIT ATTACHMENT FOR AUGERS.
Application filed April 18, 1921.- Serial No. 462,238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED MCLAUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit Attachments for Angers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to angers, and pertains especially to the class of angers employed for drilling holes in coal-mining veins preparatory to blasting.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and peculiar bit adapted to be detachably secured to such angers in boring position without the use of the usual screwend or entrance tip, and to furnish such means for attaching the bit as to afford rigid connection between the auger end and the bit without interfering with the operation of the auger and the bit in a drilling operation.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a bit specially adapted for minedrilling angers and comprising two duplicate separable members of such construction relative to each other and to the shape of the anger as to fit the latter and to form diverging cutting members having an abutting shoulder for the end of the auger, and to provide means for rigidly holding said members in such abutting position so as to cross each other central of the end of the au er to which they are secured.
arious other ObJfiCtS, advantages and improved results are attainable in the manufactnre and practical application of the invention as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Fig. 1 is an elevation of part of an anger showing the bit secured thereto in drilling position.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the dotted line 2-2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the bit members, in position to be applied to an anger.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a modification.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawin s.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ steel plates capable of being shaped 1nto desired form, sharpened an case-hardened preparatory to applying the same to a mlners auger 3, such as shown in the drawings, or any other anger of similar character.
The bit I have devised comprises two companion duplicate interchangeable members and 5, and for this reason only one of said members will be described herein in detail, it being understood that such de 65 scriptlon shall e applicable to both of said members which, when assembled and attached to an anger as 3, shall constitute the complete bit.
The auger-fitting portion or wing 6 of the b1t member 4.- is formed in convex concave shape to fit the spiral groove and web of the auger so that when the members are assembled in proper position they embrace the auger for a distance vertically from the end to which said members are applied, and follow the shape or contour of the auger and thereby form a continuation of the spiral shape of the auger. The lower portion of the wing 6 is divided into an edge as 7 and a shoulder 8 at right angles to the inner face of the member 6, and from this shoulder projects or depends a blade 9 havmg a heel edge 10 and a beveled cutting edge 11. The blade is convexed concaved and the cutting edge is inclined downwardly with respect to the head portion 6 and extends under the shoulder to an outer point 12, the lower edge of the blade being joined in a point 13 with the blade heel which crosses the central vertical plane of the auger when the members are secured tothe anger and in such secured position the heels cross each other in the central vertical plane of the auger, so that said points 13 may make engagement with the object to be bored in advance of the cutting edges. The outer points of the blades are slightly elevated above the horizontal plane of the heel points so as to give proper clearance in a. cutting operation, 1 kand the size or cutting diameter of the blades are governed by the size of the anger or hole to be drilled. Each wing member 6 has a central hole 14 for a clamping bolt 15 which extends through a like hole 16 in the lower end of the anger, and is provided with a suitable nut 17.
Preparatory to applying or clamping the bit members, the end of an ordinary miners anger is flattened and swaged as at 20, so as to thicken the spiral edges adjacent to the d straight flattened end of the auger. The bit members are placed in position on opposite sides of the auger and the clamping bolt. and nut operated to rigidly secure the members to the auger.
It will be seen that the shoulders 8, of the bit members, are of such width as to overlap the end of the auger so that the projecting shoulder of one member forms an abutment for the edge 7 of the other member. It will also be noted that the side edges of the bit members are held lush with the thickened sides of the auger, and that the protruding portion of the shoulders and the bit portion engaging the same are flush.
\Vhen the bit members are securely clamped to the anger, the relative construction and arrangement of said members form an interlocking connection with each other and with the auger, so that there is no liability of loosening or displacement in a drillin operation.
eferring to the modification shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the bit members may have one or more depressions or countersunk portions as 18 which are intended to fit lugs 19 on the faces of the end of the auger, but this is merely a precautionary measure for insuring proper adjustment and security.
The expeditious and time-saving application, adjustment and detachment. of this bit is obvious for convenience in rctempering and sharpening the bit members, one of which may become impaired or disabled and removed and replaced without removing the other, and the said members or several of them may be transported to and from a mine shaft or other mine-drilling position for re pair without transporting or removing the auger from the mine.
I do not wish to be understood as confining my invention to any particular size or to an particular metal other than is suitable for the purpose thereof, nor do I wish to limit the use of the invention to any particular boring implement other than to such to which it is applicable, but reserve the right to make such changes and variationstherein and in the manufacture and practical application thereof as may not. be inconsistent with the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with an anger having a flat bit end, of a two-part detachable bit comprising duplicate. interchangeable mem. bers having securing wings fitting the spiral channel of the auger adjacent to said end, a shoulder in each of said members abutting against and overlapping said end, cutting blades projecting from the shoulders and crossing each other under the said end, the overlapping portion of the shoulder forming abutments for the said wings, and means for clamping the said auger end to and between said wings.
2. A bit-attachment for an anger, includingduplicate bit-members, having wings conformed to opposite surfaces of the spiral auger-blades and oppositely deflected and curved terminal cutting blades, each bitmember having a shoulder intermediate its wing and blade adapted to abut the bit-end of the auger, and means for securing said bit-members to the auger.
3. A bit-attachement for an auger, including duplicate bit-members havin wings conformed to opposite surfaces of tie spiral auger-blades and oppositely deflected and curved terminal cutting blades, each bitmember having a shoulder intermediate its win and blade adapted to abut the bit-end ot' the auger, said bit-member terminal cut ting blades having heel-edges crossing each other under the bit-end of the auger, and means for securing said bit-members to the au er.
fn witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED MoLAUGI-ILIN.
