UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEN'RI BERNAY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO NEVER-BULL DRILII 00., OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
DRILL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI BERuAY, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n the city and county of San Francisco and State My invention relates to improvements in rock drills wherein detachable and reversible cutters operate in conjunction wlth a rotatable ring having a gap therein to permit orprevent the passage of said cutters from the drill stock; and the objects of my invention are First, to provide an improved rock drill having improved means for easily and readily renewing the cutting edges thereof;
Second, to provide an improved devicev of the character described having an improved cutter retaining means;
Third, tohprovide a new and improved construction whereby cutting edges of drills may be easily and readily renewed to increase the eificiencyof the tool.
Is accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specifica tion wherein like characters are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the drill disclosing my improved construction Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view Fig. 3 is an elevation taken on a plane at a slightly different angle from Fig. 1;
Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1 disclosing the arrangement of the arcuate detachable cutters; and
Figs. 5 and 6 are bottom plan views of a drill disclosing modified forms for the arrangement of the cutters.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 isused to designate a stock or-drill having an annular seat 2 formed near one end thereof by means of an annular flange 3 and a somewhat smaller annular shoulder 1 arnular seat 2.
The stock 1 is bored centrally for the passage of water in flushing out the drilled holes, said central =bore having an enlarged tapered portion 7 to receive a tapered end 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

of a second stock 9 bored centrally as at 11 said central bore 11 communicating with the central bore 6 of the stock 1 to form a continuous passage.
The stock 1 is also provided withlongitudinal arcuate slots 12 whose inner en'ds extend beyond the seat 2 and are formed with oppositely faced convexed surfaces 14: to engage the bevels 16 of double edged and reversible arcuate cutters 17 detachably mounted within the slots 12, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
Thea cutters 17 are provided with notches 18 which register with the annular seat 2 of the stock 1 when said *cutter is seated within the slots 12. 1
An offset sprin 21 is secured to the periphery of the stoc as at 22 and is arranged ,to engage the gap within the split ring 5 for the purpose of preventing the rotation of the said ring 2 to register the gap therein with one of the slots 12 thereby preventing a lateral movement of a cutter 17 within its slot 12 as well as a longitudinal movement of said'cutter which is prevented by the engagement of the said ring 5 with the notchesv .18 which register with the annular seat 2. v
- In carrying drills into a stop or location 1 formed integral with the stock or drill. In
the present invention it is only necessary to carry one stock and a number of detachable cutters whichmay be inserted withimthe stock, when old cutters haye become dulled and worn, in the following manner:
The spring 21 is raised and thereby removed from the gap within the split ring 5 thereby permitting the rotation of the said. ring 5 until the gap therein registers with one of the slots 12 in the stock. 1. The cutfor the miner to carry a number of ter 17 in the slot 12 registering with the gap of the ring 2 may be moved laterally from its respective slot 12 and a new cutter placed in said slot. The ring 5 is thenturned to register the. gap therein with successive slots until all of the cutters 17 have been replaced with new or sharp ones.
The ring 5 is then turned until the ap therein registers with the spring 21 w en said spring will move into said gap to prevent a furtherrotation of. the said ring 5 and thereby prevent removal .of. the cutters.
The cutters 17 are prevented from moving out of the slots 12 longitudinally by the engagement of the ring 5 with the notches 18 in the cutters 17 which notches register with the annular seat 2 of the stock 1.
The ends of the slots 12 are formed with oppositely faced arcuate or concaved surfaces which engage the 'bevels 16 of the cutter 17 so that the inner or inoperative cutting edges of the cutters 17 are not injured or dulled by impact when the drill is in use.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated modified forms of arrangement of the cutters 17. In Fig. 5 I have provided more than two cutters to increase the cutting efliciency of the tool. In Fig. 6 I have provided a series of straight and radially disposed cutters 17 which are prevented from moving inward radially by means of a tube 24, these cutters being held from movement radially and outwardly by the hereinbefore described split ring 5 as in the preferred forms of the invention.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved rock drill having reversible and detachable cutters as well as improved means for retaining the cutters in an operative position without dulling the inoperative cutting edges.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
1. A drill comprising a stock having slots in the end thereof; cutters movably mounted within. the slots; a ring, having a gap therein and rotatably mounted upon the stock to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said gap being of substantially the same Width as one of the slots to permit the passage of a cutter laterally when said split is opposite one of said slots; and means for normally preventing the rotation of the ring,
2. A drill comprising a stock having slots in the end thereof; cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in the ends adjacent the periphery of the stock; a ring rotatably mounted upon the stock and Within the notches of the cutters to prevent,
a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said ring having a gap therein substantially of the same width as the slots in the stock whereby the cutters may be moved laterally from the slots when the slot within the ring coincides withsaid slot 3." A drill comprising a stock having slots in the end thereof; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in theends adjacent the periphery of the stock; a ring rotatable mounted upon the stock and within the notches of the cutters to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said ring having a gap therein substantially of the samewidth as the slots inthe stock whereby the cutters 1 upon the stock and within movably mounted within the slots and hav- '1 ing notches in the ends adjacent the periphery of the stock; a ring rotatably mounted upon the stock and within the notches of the cutters to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said ring having a gap therein substantially of the same width as the slots in the stock whereby the cutters may be moved laterally from the slots when the split within the ring coincides with said slot; and means for normally engaging the gap within the ring to prevent the rotation thereof. 5. A drill comprising a stock having slots in the ends thereof; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in the ends adjacent the periphery of the stock; a ring rotatably mounted upon the stock and within the notches of the cutters to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said ring having a gap therein substantially of the same width as the slots in the stock whereby the cutters may be moved laterally from the slots when the split within the ring coincides with said slot; and a suitable spring mounted upon thestock and arranged to engage the ap within the ring to prevent'the rotation t iereof.

A drill comprising a stock having slots in the end thereof; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in the ends adjacent the periphery of the stock; a ring rotatably mounted the notches of the cutters to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters, said ring having a gap therein substantially of the same Width as the slots in the. stock whereby the cutters may be moved laterally from the slots when the split within the ring coincides with said slot; and a, suitable spring mounted upon the stock to engage and prevent the rotation of the ring and vto retain the gap therein away from the ends of the slots in the stock.
7. A drill comprising a stock having an annular seat on. the periphery thereof and slots in the end thereof extending beyond the annular seat; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having said ring having a gap therein substantially equal in width to one of the slots to permit the passage of the cutters when said gap is registered with the slot; and means for preventing the rotation of the ring.
8. A drill comprising a stock having an annular seat on the periphery thereof and slots in the end thereof extending beyond the annular seat; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in opposite ends thereof registering with the annular seat; a ring rotatably mounted within the annular seat and notches to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters away from the stock said ring having a gap therein substantially equal in width to one of the slots to permit the passage of the cutters when said gap is registered with the slot; and means for engaging the gap in the ring to normally prevent the gap from registering with the slots.
9. A drill comprising a stock having an annular seat on the periphery thereof and slots in the end thereof extending beyond the annular seat; double edged cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches in opposite ends thereof registering with the annular seat; a ring rotatably mounted within the annular seat and notches to prevent a lateral and longitudinal movement of the cutters away from the stock said ring having a gap therein substantially equal in width to one of the slots to permit the passage of the cutters when said gap is registered with the slot; and a suitable spring arranged to engage the gap within the ring to prevent said gap from registering with one of the slots.

A drill comprising a suitable stock having an annular seat near one end thereof and longitudinal arcuate slots extending beyond said annular seat, the inner ends of said slots being'formed with opposite concaved surfaces to engage the end of a beveled cutter away from the point thereof; double edged arcuate cutters movably mounted within the slots and having notches on the ends thereof registering with the annular seat on the stock; a ring rotatably mounted within the annular seat and notches and having a gap therein equal to the width of one of the slots whereby a cutter may be. removed when the gap registers with one i having an annular seat near one end thereof and longitudinal arcuate .slots extending beyond said annular seat, the inner ends of said slots being formed with opposite concaved surfaces to engage the end of a" beveled cutter away from the point thereof; double edged arcuate cutters movably mounted within'the slots and having notches on the ends thereof registering withthe annular seat on the stock; a ring rotatably mounted within the annular seat and notches and having a gap therein equal to the width of one of the slots whereby a cutter may be removed when the gap registers with one of the slots, said ring being arranged to prevent a longitudinal and lateral movement of the cutters within the slots; and a suitable spring secured to the stock and engaging the gap in the ring to prevent the rotation of said ring.
