being arranged to extend at right angles from the faces of a triangular shaped shank attachable at the lower end of the drilling stem.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool shank having its upper end of a rounded formation for attaching to the lower end of the drilling stem and its lower end of a triangular formation about which is arranged a sectional casing formed from the base portion of the cutting blades, each section forming a cover for the corners of the shank and extending along the flattened surfaces thereof for enga ement with the adjacent casing sections an arranged for connection. with each other to form a unitary casing completely enclosing each side of the shank.
A still further object is to provide means for fixedly attaching each of the blade sections to the shank whereby to prevent relative longitudinal movement therewith.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, strong and durable, in
- which the parts may be easily and quickly dissembled for replacement and repair, 1nexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction and combination of the various elements comprising the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts shown in section to illustrate the merging of the rounded upper end of the shank into the triangular lower portion thereof,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective viewof one of the cutting blade retaining plates.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, I have shown my invention comprising a well drilling'tool shank indicated at 5 having a bore 6 extending entirely throughout the same, the upper end of the shank being externally threaded for attaching to the drilling stem and also for threadedly receiving a collar 7 at the upper end thereof.
The upper threaded end of the shank is of a round shape in. cross section as' shown by an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings, and at a point slightly below the end of threads formed thereo'mthe shank merges into. a triangular formation in cross section, substantially gradual shoulders 8 being thus formed at the point of such merger.
At the -'point of the shank provided with the shoulders 8 I arrangea snug fitting collar 9 having its bore shaped complementary to the shank, the upper edge of the collar 9 being 7 reduced as indicated at 10 enabling the 'lower end of the threaded collar 7 to extend thereover in overlapping relation. The lower edge of the collar 9 extends downward in overlapping relation with the upper reduced end 13 of cutting blade sections 14, arranged at the lower portionof the shank.
Each of said blade sections comprise a base 15 extending longitudinally with respect to the shank and arranged to fit over one of the corners formed by the angular side of the triangular lower portion ofthe shank.
Each base section extends substantially midway of the flattened side of the shank, the edges of the respective base sections being disposed in abutting relation with each other to form a casing for the shank. From one edge of each of the base sections 15 a cutting blade 16 extends at right angles thereto,'thus extending outwardly with respect to each of the angular faces of the shank. At one side of each of the blades is arranged a longitudinally'extending rib 17 against which is fitted one edge of a retaining plate 18 having its opposite edge retained against the free edge of the adjacent base section 15. Openings are formed through the blade 16 and the retaining plate through whieh'bolts 19 are inserted whereby to secure comprising a shank having the plate and blades in position with respect to each other.
Openings are also formed in the angular walls of each of the base sections arranged in alinement with openings extending through the corners of the triangular shaped portion of the shank for receiving bolts 20 whereby to fixedly secure the base sections to the shank to prevent longitudinal movement of the base sections with respect to the shank. Openings 21 are also formedin one of the blades adjacent the head of the bolts 20 enabling the bolts to be inserted therethrough for fitting the same in position for securing the parts. together. Shoulders 22 are formed on the outer faces of the base sections adjacent the openings through which the bolts 20 are introduced to form a suitable face for the nuts carried by the bolts in order to facilitate the proper tightening thereof.
It will be observed from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings that the lower end of the blades 16 extend downwardly beyond the lower end of the shank for a slight distance so as to provide a suitable working space for the cutting edges 23 formed at the bottom of the blades. The material cut by the lower edge 23 of the blades is drawn up through the bore 6 extending through the shank by means of suction created by a pump mounted on the well platform.
It .will be apparent that by mounting the blades 16 upon the shank in the manner indicated that the same are fixedly secured thereto by reason of the triangular formation of the shank so as to transmit the rotary movement of the stem without danger of theslipping of the blade during the operation and at the same time enable the blades to be easily and quickly removed and replaced whenever the same become worn. By this arrangement any one of the blades may be replaced without necessitating a replacement of the entire drilling tool.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
. Having thus described my invention, what the shank and a blade carried by each of said sections extending radially from the shank.
2. In a drilling tool of the class described an annular threaded upper end adapted r attachment with a drilling stem, said annular portion of the shankterminating in a triangular section at the lower portion of the shank, said shank being hollow throughout, a collar threadedly carried on the annular upper portion of the shank, a collar snugly fitted over the shank at the point of merger between the annular and triangular portion thereof, a plurality of blade sections arranged at the triangular portion of the shank, the upper and lower edges of the last named collar being disposed in overlapping relation respectively with said first named collar and the upper edge of the blade section, each of said blade sections comprising a base section fitted over the corners of the triangw. lar portion of the shank and extending along each side thereof substantially midway of the shank with the edges of each base section arranged in abutting relation with each other, cutting bladesextending at right angles from the base section, ribs extending longitudinally on each of the blades, plates disposed between the ribs and adjacent end of another of the base sections and attachable to the blades for forming a reinforcement therefor, and means for attaching each of said base sections to the shank whereby to prevent relative longitudinal movement therebetween.
3. In a drilling tool of the class described, comprising a tubular shank attachable at its upper end with the drilling stem and having its lower end of an angular formation in cross section, providing a plurality of edges extending longitudinally of the shank and a plurality of blade sections removably carried at the lower end of the shank, each of said sections having a portion formed complementary to one of the angles of the shank and fitted thereover, blades carried by each section extended outwardly therefrom, means for interconnecting said sections and constituting reinforcing means for the blades, and means for connecting each section to the shank for movement therewith.
