Description

Aug. 13, 1935. w. L. PEARcE DRILL Filed Aug. 16, 1934 @reinvention-relates tegad'ri`i1.` An object ofthe invention is to provide a drill @ofthe ehar'atelfoescribed. specially designed for dijillng wellslthrouglhearth formation,` such as "deepioil wellswhich` pierce both hardand soft strata- I. s .r ..11 ,.1
Another objectsof the .invention is to provide a 'drill having side `blades or cutters which are reduced in width from above downwardly, and the drill preferably terminates at its lower end in a pilot, the combination being such that a drill will be provided which will drill a comparatively straight bore through the various formations encountered.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drill of the character described having a novel arrangement of channels through which the drilling fluid may be conducted from the drill stem downwardly through the drill and delivered to the cutting blades or cutters so as to flush the same, to prevent the collection of the formation thereon, to keep the cutters cool and to flush out the bore.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example ofvwhich is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a side view of the drill and Figure 2 shows an edge view partly in section.
In the drawing, the numeral I designates the drill head which is preferably cylindrical and l whose upper end is threaded, as at 2, for the connection of a drill stem or other driving member thereto.
Beneath the head and formed integrally therewith there is the main body 3 which is attened, as shown, and is somewhat wider, transversely, than the diameter of the head. This body tapers downwardly in thickness and approximately midway between the head and the lower end of the body is reduced in width and formed with the oppositely curved side cutters 4, 4. The forward faces of these side cutters 4 are of a general concave contour as shown. The

' l 5 claims... (oi,- 255-161);
This pilot., is of somewhat less transverse diame'ter than that ofthe reduced body-portion 3". /Extenclingfrom fthe upper end of the drill downwardly into the Ah'ea'd I there is a relatively largebore 'ii-and leadingdownwardly from this bore `and terminating within the contour of the forward faces of the blades 4,1 are the channels 8", 8i `'The channels 8 have the branches 9, 9
leading downwardly from the inner sides thereof and terminating on opposite sides of the drill at the upper end of the pilot 6. These channels 8, 9 may be cheaply formed in the construction Of the drill by forming grooves in the opposite sides of the body and then covering the grooves with the plates IG, if), II, ,II whose margins are countersunk into the body and are welded thereto, the upperends of said channels 8 continuing on up through the head into the bore 1.
It is to be noted that the upper ends of the channels 8 merge together so that the material between them will present a sharp upwardly directed cutting edge I 2 and similar sharp upwardly directing cutting edges I3, I3 will be provided between the branches 9 and the channels 8 as indicated in Figure 1, said cutting edges I2 and I3 thus offering slight interference to the drilling iiuid being forced downwardly through said channels so as not to retard the velocity thereof.
On account of its length this type of drill will tend to follow a straight course and in that respect the drill will be assisted by the pilot E;
also on account of the distribution and arrangement of the cutting blades, the drillv will very rapidly penetrate the formation encountered.
The .drawing and description disclose what is no-w considered to be a preferred form of the invention `by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:

A drill comprising a drill head formed for the attachment of a drill stem thereto, a body formed integrally with the head and having upper side cutters, said body being reduced in width beneath said cutters, the reduced portion of the body terminating at its lower end in lower side cutters, said drill having channels leading downwardly therethrough and terminating above the upper side cutters and also having branch channels leading from the rst mentioned chan-l nels and terminating above the lower side cutters.
2. A drill comprising a drill head formed for the attachment of a driving member thereto, a body formed integrally with the head and having side cutters, said body being reduced in width Y beneath said side cutters and extended downwardly, and terminating at its lower end in side cutters, said drill having downwardly diverging channels therethrough terminating in openings above the upper side cutters, said channels having downwardly converging branch channels which terminate above the lower side cutters.
