UNITED STATES FRANKLIN O. PAINTER, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,609, dated J anuary 20, 1874; application filed December 6, 1873. i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN O. PAINTER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the suspenders, showing the buttonstraps and manner of their attachment. Fig. 2 represents the same with a slight modifica tion in regard to the style or finish.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the back button-straps; B, the
front button-straps; C C, the straps which pass over the shoulders of the wearer; D, the back pivot piece, to which the button-straps A and the shoulder-straps C are pivoted. This pivotpiece D is composed of sheet metal, cut in any form to suit the taste, and has a backing of leather or leather and cloth, E, cut in any desired form. The ends of the shoulder-straps are each provided with a metallic plate or tip, F, firmly riveted or attached otherwise thereto, as seen at G. These plates or tips are pivoted to the back pivot-piece D, as seen at H, so that they readily turn on the pivot or pivots, and enable the shoulder-straps to adjust themselves to the back of the wearer. The back buttonstraps are also tipped with metallic plates 1, attached by rivets J or otherwise made fast, and these plates are pivoted to the back plate I), as seen at 0, so that they freely turn and adjust themselves 'to the position of the button on the pants. The front button-straps B are also provided with metallic plates K, at tached as heretofore described, and connected with the shoulder-straps by a pivot, L, either with or without a metallic pivot-plate, and either with or without the leather shield-piece M, as seen in Fig. 2. Thesestraps render freely on the pivot L, and are allowed to adjust them selves to the position of the front buttons of the pants. The pivot and other connections are formed with eyelets, or by other means; and, instead of attaching the tip-plates rigidly to the shoulder and button straps, these connections may be pivots; but I prefer them as described.
By connecting the pants with pivots, we form self-adjusting and easy suspenders, less likely to twist in putting on, and more durable than when made in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with the button and shoulder straps of suspenders, the metallic tip-plates F, I, and K, or their equivalents, for the purposes described.
2. The pivot-plate D, in combination with tips F and I, as and for the purposes described.
3. The pivots H, O, and L, or either of them, in combination with suspenders, arranged as shown and described.
FRANKLIN O. PAINTER.
