Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
WM. HINMAN, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,660, dated April 15, 1856.
To all whom t mayconcern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HINMAN, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 being an end elevation of my improved bedsetad, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section in the line a: of Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate similar parts in both figures.
The rectangular frame of my improved bedstead, which supports the mattress, is composed of the broad flat side rails Y), b, and the end rails c, c, which are united to each other by rabbet-joints, as shown i n the drawings. The inclosing side boards a, a, of the bedstead, are placed upon the rails and are firmly secured thereto in the manner hereinafter set forth.
rlhe posts of my improved bedstead are each composed of two parts d, and f. The respective portions d, d, of said posts, being placed above the joints which unite the rails b, c; and the portion f, of said posts, being placed immediately beneath the upper parts of the same and serving as the supporting legs of the bedstead. The respective upper and lower portions d, f, of the posts are united to each other and to the rails b, c, by means of a proj ect-ing screw on the upper end of each of the parts f, working into a screw socket in the lower end of each of the upper portions eZ, d, of the posts. The upper portions of the posts are united to the side boards a, a, and the end boards g, g, of the bedstead, by means of tenons on the ends of said boards, which have an upward inclination of their upper edges, and which fit into mortises in the said upper portions of the posts of the proper shape to receive them, as represented in Fig. 2.
It will therefore be perceived that the action of the screws of the portions f, f, of the posts, as they are turned to the right, to draw down the upper portions of the posts firmly upon the connecting joints of the rails b, c, will at the same time draw the sides of the said portions of the posts laterally into close contact with the ends of the side and end boards of the bedstead, and at the same time draw the lower edges of said side and end boards into close contact with the upper sides of the rails b, c. Thus forming a handsome bedstead, the respective parts of which are all closely and securely` united to each other by the action of the screw connections between the upper and lower portions of the posts upon the respective joints substantially as set forth.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Giving an upward inclination to the upper surfaces of the tenons on the side boards a, and on the head and foot boards g, and a corresponding shape to the mortises in the sections d, d, of the posts that receive said tenons, by which the action of the screw connections between the upper and lower sections of the posts are enabled to form a close-jointed and perfect union between the rails b, c, the head and foot g, and the sectional posts d, f, substantially as herein set forth. j
The above specification of my improved bedstead fastening, signed and witnessed this 23 day of August 1855.
WILLIAM I-IINMAN.
