IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-RAG LOOPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,564, dated January 20, 1874; application filed April 19, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. EBEN ALMY, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Loopers for Carpet-Rags and Button-Hole Cutters, of which the following is a specifica-y tion:

My invention relates to devices designed l' for use in fastening the ends of rags to prepare them for weaving into carpets, and for cutting button-holes; and my invention consists of a removable looping-knife provided with a biting-slit for the rag and a V-shaped en d, in combination with a bed having a V- shaped supporting-socket for the knife in piercing and looping the rags, the said knife and the V-shaped socketed bed serving also to operate as a button-hole cutter, whereby the removable knife cuts and loops the rags when it is liked, and ties the knot in drawing it away from the socket-seat, upon which the lapped rag ends are held by the thumb and finger-the device embracing three essentialV points, viz., iirst, a notch that will have a biting-gripe to fasten the rag firmly when onc'e inserted into it, so that it will not give trouble during the remainder of the operation, and then readily disengage the same when' the knot is tied; second, a blade which is permanent during the first part of the operationthat is, formingthe slit and the loop--and is then seized and withdrawn from its socket to tion, showing the two first steps in the operation "of looping. Fig. 2 represents a similar view, showing the loop made, but not closed; and Fig. 3, a similar view, showing the knife withdrawn from its socket-support to form the tie by drawing the loop with the knife.

The lap-board or bed A has formed within it a V-shaped socket, B, to receive the correspondingly-shaped end of the. knife C, which is thus firmly held in a vertical position for slitting the rags and forming the loop, yet can be removed for making the tie. The two edges a and b of this V-shaped end may teri' minate in a blunt point, @,and the knife thereby be wholly supported upon the inclined sides of the socket-seat. The knife C has .two cutting-edges, C', terminating in a point. On one side the cutting-edge projects at d, so as to relieve the rags from unnecessary tearing in pressing them toward the` lap-board. O11 the other side is a notch, D, having an open mouth, e, and terminating in a narrow bitingslit, f, for holding the loose end of the rag by its sharp angle, and allowing it to be easily y ball-rag F; press them both thus lapped upon and over the knife down upon the surfaceof the bed A; hold the ngers of the left hand upon the lapped ends of .the rags at' the left of the knife; seize the knife with the right y hand and withdraw it, carrying with it the loose end of the rag E, andthe loop is formed and the tie effected. e

An eye in the blade, or a spring-catch on its side, may be substituted for the fasteningslit, or the latter may be made in different ways so long as it serves to bite the rag to the blade. f
