TO VALMONT MANU- FUWI ER TUEF:
im lication filed September 27 lie i known ind i dot-rim; Iil. Vi-tile TIINIL, e You oi the limited btntcm rcsld ing at lushing, in the county oi Queens and State of New York have inrentcd e certain new and useful. Powder Full, of which the following is u s wcilicntion.
My invention relates to powiiier puffs and has or its ohjcci; io produce a, machine made powih l hich can he inaniitew tured easily .Jnl economical1y from u rnini: mum nmnher of fij'j ilihli'e parts and which fulfills all desired requirements of use and continues form: hip in emit-erotics with the more cxpcnsire hand-s ern puw n putts.

A further ohjeci of any inrcniion to produce s pii -Vi'ifli Hil in Whnh the handle is integral with tie top [no ll and prcferul ly fastened position by u siinpi device.
A further object of my invention to produce a powder pull the top of wiiic' plnited or is gethere to give the linisheu and attractive appearance of high lfldilfl handmade and huntl st'awn powder puiis.
other and further objects of my invention will he dppili'flii from the fuliowl description and from the accompanying drawings of illustrative vn'ilmdinicnts there of in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a top perspective of :1 coin pleted powder puff Figure 2 a top plan with the lunnllc cut, away just above the fastening device there for;

Figure 6 a control vertical section of one cnihoduncnt o' a completed powder puff, uzsl Figure in central vertical section of an other cinhml nicnt of a completed powder pull,
Spaces in the drawings have been cxaggwuled in some instances in order to indicate clearly the construction.
Similar reference characters refer tosimilill pains throughout the drawings.
n thc endiodiinents illuetrntcd, the top L i of the pull" is made of any desired irirg prcicrnhly gathered at its central portion to F rm radinl plnits and a central handle 2:. The handle may he secured in position in any desired manner such, for example, as by o, ring 3 which is bent or pressed in at one or more places to form a i l 'llllllifiill i il l etructivc securing device. A lnincllc whirl] cannot become detached and on ntiruciivc appearance for the top of the powder pull thus is obtained at the some time from u single piece of material at a low Hi2: c-iuring cost.
to se ure together upper fabric 1 and lower i'uhric l oi the completcdpowii p l i provide :1. thin, tintupper ring :1 and a simllmig cylindrical, lower ring 6 which preferably has its lower edge interned sutliricntly to decrease the internal iiinmetcr of the ring at that point. The external dimnctcr of upper ring 5 is less than the internal diai'netcr of lower cylindrical ring 6 so that said upper ring will fit within said lower cylindrical ring and loci: the fabrics therehetween when the rings are forced together in the manner described hereinafter.
The preferred method of producing the cnihodimeniis of the completed powder pull illustrutcijl is to gather upper fabric 1 in plane or in folds to form a top having an 33 which is secured in place by bondor pressing in its sides in any desired number of places as sbowm for example, in Figures 1 and 2. The part of upper fabric 1 below handle 2 is placed over upper ring .3 with the edges of the fabric. iuturned under the ring as indicated in l ignre. .3. Bottom fabric 4 is placed around cylindrical ring 6 with the edges of the fabric inturned over the top edge as indicated in Figure 5. The two fabric covered )al'ts 5 and (3 then are forced together and the upper and lower edges of lower cylindrical ring ti, or either edge, turned over upper ring 5, thereby clamping the fabric set-urely between said rings (which are concealed from view as indicated in Figure 6) and securing the desired thinness. The order of procedure may be changed as desired and is not intended to be fixed by a statement of order of procedure in the claims.
It will be seen that to form the completed powder puff including the handle, only five parts are necessary the two fabrics .t and 4 and the three rings 3, 5, and ti. It requires no complicated assembling of parts and the completed powder puff fulfills every reuirement of use and appearance as satisactorily as the most carefully and expensively made hand-sewn powder pull.
The embodiment illustrated in Figures l and 7 of the drawings i similar to the embodiment of Figures 3, 5, and G. The prininal difference is in upper ring 5 whieh has a sught flange :30 on its outer edge. This edge, however, is of less depth than the sides of lower cylindrical ring 6 lo that the edge or edges of said lower ring ll ay be turned over upper ring .3 to clamp the. material roperly in place and provide a thin edge or the completed powder pulf.
As it is not essential in the embodiments illustrated that upper ring 5 he of any substantial width, a dash line has been added to said upper ring 5 in Figure 3 to indieate a narrow ring which may be flat or of any desired shape in cross section. It is essential in this embodiment only that a frame or support for the upper fabric be provided, over which a lower part (3 is turned to hold upper and lower l'ahries 1 and 4 securely in place.
Many modifications of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art \\'itl1 out departing therefrom or from the scope of the claims, my invention not being limited to the particular embodiments chosen to illustrate it but consisting of upper and lower fabrics secured together to provide a thin powder pufl' with a soft center and an attractive top with a handle integral there with. It is obvious, moreover, that plaits may be formed in the upper" fabric without the formation of a handle and over any form of supporting member whether ring-shaped or solid.
Throughout the specification and claims I have used the term ring in the sense of an annulus or other member having supporting edges and a very narrow body por- {ion as distinguished from a disk or similar member having a substantial body portion.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A powder puff of the character described, including, in combination, a frame formed of a pair of rings, one of saidrings being less in exterior diameter than the interior diameter of the other so that it may be positioned therewithin, material cover ing the front face of one ring and other material covering the rear face of the other ring, the edges of both pieces of material being clamped between the exterior edge of the smaller ring and the larger ring, whereby said material is unsupported except at the edges of the frame so that both covers for substantially their full areas are flexible and yielding in use.
2. A powder puff, including, in combination, a frame, a cover for the front of said frame forming an impact portion, and a cover for the back of said frame, said covers being secured to the frame at their edge portions, said back cover having its central portion gathered together in the form of an upwardly projecting handle, and clamping means for holding said handle and the back cover in the formed shape.
A device of the character described, including, in combination, a frame formed of a pair of rings, one of said rings being less in exterior diameter than the interior diameter of the other so that it may be positioned therewithip, material covering the front face of one ring and other material covering the rear face of the other ring, the edges of both pieces of material being clamped between the exterior edge of the smaller ring and the larger ring the central portion of said last mentioned material being gathered together to form an outwardly projecting handle and means for holding the handle in its formed shape.
4' A device of the character described, in luding, in combination, a frame formed of a pair of rings, one of said rings having a vertical flange and an inwardly extending flange on its front face, the other ring being less in external diameter than the internal diameter of the first mentioned ring so that it. may be positioned therewithin, a. piece of material for covering the front, face of said frame and another piece of material for covering the rear face of said frame, said pieces of material being of sulficient size so that their edges may be socured together between the exterior edge of the smaller ring and the vertical flange of the larger rin; and said piece of material for the back having an intermediate 5 formed shape and holding said back material in the form f a plurality of plaits.
5. As an article of manufacture, a powder pufi' including a cover for the front face thereof, a cover for the rear face thereof 10 having an intermediate portion gathered toether to form an integral upwardly proecting handle, and means for holding the andle into its formed shape.
6. As an article of1n:1nnl':n:ture, a powder puff including a cover for the front face thereof, a cover for the rear face thereof having its central portion gathered together to form a handle integral therewith,- the formation of said handle also forming plaits radiating therefrom, and means for clamping the handle into its formed shape.
In testimony that I. claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of September, 1919.
JOSEPH E. VALENTINE.
