SIVIOIIZNG PIPE.
Application filed July 559,
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, DAVID L. liliLL, citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and lp tate ol New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a taniokingl ipe, or which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to smoking pipes and an object of the invention is to so connect. the mouth piece with the bowl that direct suction from the bottom or the bowl into the mouth of the smoker is impossible, so that the sucking into the nijouth oi the nicotine and saliva mixture that quickly fOllllSiLIlCl accumulates in the bowl ol an ordinary pipe, while in use, is eliminated. Another object oi the invention is to provide a connection between the bowl and the mouth piece which will separate the lnirning tobacco in the bowl from the saliva, thus e.n abling the obtaining of a clean dry smoke. 5 till another object of the invention is to provide a pipe that will be as sanitary as possible, provision being made which will enable the ready cleaning oi all portions thereof.
To these and other ends, the invention consists 01 certain parts and combinations of parts, all oil which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view or a pipe constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pipe; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Referrin more )articularlv to the drawv ings, 1 indicates the bowl having a short e);- tension .2 with a. passageway 9 therein, and 5 indicates the mouth piece having a passage way 10 therein.
Between the mouth piece 5 and the extension 2 of the bowl there is provided a connecting member 3. This connecting member has two longitudinally extending and parallel passageways T and 8, one above the other, the passageway "7 being connected to the bowl extension 2 by a screw threaded projection l and the passageway 8 being connected to the mouth piece 0 by a screw threaded extension 6, the passageway "i' aligning with the passageway 9 in the bowl extension 2 and the passageway 8 aligning with the passageway 10 in the mouth piece 5. At the inner end of the passageway 7 an externallythreaded tube 11" is arranged with which a cup or cap 11 connects, while at the outer end of the pas- 1922. Serial No. 578K288.
provided with which a cup 12 connects.
These two cups 11 and 12 may contain absorbent cotton and serve to collect any material from the passageways 7 and S. The connecting member 3 also has two passage ways and connected by passageways and 8, arranged parallel to each other, and at right angles to the passageways fl and S, the connecting passageway ldbeing nearer to the mouth piece than the connecting passa eway 13, which is nearer to the bowl. Aligned with the two passageways 1dandlS are two externally threaded tubes 15" and 14:, whichare bevelled at 18 and 14t respectively, so that passageways are provided to two removable cups 15 and 16, secured respectively to the projecting ends of the tubes 13 and 145 in the cups 11, 12, 15 and 16 considerable absorbent cotton may be arranged.
1n the use of the pipe, the bowl 1 is filled with tobacco in the usual manner and the through the bowl as is customary. The saliva from the mouth runs down the passageway 10 and collects in the cups 122, 15 and 16. The smoke from the bowl passes from the passageway '4" to thepassageway 8 through the two passageways 13 and 1d and is thus separated from the saliva, thus giving a smoke in which no saliva or condensed matters will enter the mouth piece. To a certainezrtent the dry smoke from the bowl will take up or absorb some of the moisture in the passageway 10, thus tending still. further to maintain such passageway in a dry condi tion. Should the user oi' the pipe tail to clean the same, as often as should be necessary, any saliva and condensed matters will t ad to collect toward the passageway 13 and men should this fill up, a condition which should not be permitted to occur, the smoke still has the passageway 1% to rely upon without creating-a suction on the saliva and condoused matter. Furtl'iermore, any further clogging oi the passageway 13 or 141 still leaves the other passageway open for direct draft without drawing the clogged matter into the mouth oi the user. There will be a slight deposit of condensed matter in the passageway 7 from the, smoke but this is not mixed with the saliva which is confined to the passageway 8. The cleaning of the pipe may be easily effected by'removing the cap 11 to clean the passageway 7, the cap 12 to clean the passageway 8 and the caps 15 and 16 to clean the passageways 13 and 14:, respectively.
What I claim as my inventionand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a mouth piece, and a body-connecting said bowl and mouth piece, and provided with two passageways, one of which aligns with the passageway of the bowl and the other oi which aligns with the passageway of the mouth piece, said body also having two other passageways connecting the first two named passageways, one of said last named passageways being further removed from the mouth piece than the other.
2. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a mouth piece, and a body connecting said bowl and mouth piece and provided with two parallel passageways arranged one above the other, one of said passageways being aligned with the passageway oil. the bowl and the other of said passageways being aligned with the passageway of the mouth piece, said body having also two other passageways at right angles to the first two named passageways and connecting said first named passageway, one of said passageways being farther removed from the mouth piece than the other.
3. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a mouth piece, a body connecting the bowl and tl'iemouth piece,- provided with two parallel passageways, one of which connects at one end with the bowl,-and the other of which connects with the mouth piece, and provided with two other parallel passageways arranged at right anglesto the first named passageway and I connecting the latter, one nearer the mouth piece than the other, a collecting cup at the end of the first named passageway opposite the bowl, a. collecting cup at the end of the second named passageway opposite the mouth piece, and collecting cups connecting with the lowermost passageway of the two first mentioned passageways opposite the lower ends of the two second mentioned passageways.
