Be it lrnown that I, lViLLrAM C. BAKELS, a subject of the Queen of Holland, and a resident of Midland Park, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and lmproved Tool for Removing from or Applying' Differential Gears to Their Axles, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to tools and has particular reference to a tool for effectinfT the removal or application of a dilferential gear to the axle.
Ordinarily the differential gears which are secured to the inner ends of the axle sections by a lrey and the differential lock rings are applied thereto or removed therefrom by hammering or pounding' the same into or out of place. This practice or method in addition to involving' an unnecessary amount of time and labor often results in fracturing or breakage of either the gear axle or retaining elements.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a tool of the character' set forth for expeditiously removing or associating a gear with its axle by forcing the saine into or out of place thereby eliminating the necessity of hammering or pounding the same.
As a further object the invention aims to provide a tool of the character described, as an accessory for garages or repair shops which embodies means for associating` the same with an ordinary bench vise or other similar device for supporting the tool during its use. l
As a further object the invention contemplates a. tool of this character which is extremely simple in its construction and mode of operation and which is strong, durable and compact.
With the above reci-ted and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated inv the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

Refer-ring` to the. drawings by characters ofreference 10-10 designates4 aA pair of spaced sidev rails having their. opposite extremities inturned as at 11l and secured by means of rivets 12 to the outwardly projecting; ears 13 ofthe front andv rear end blocks 14 and; 15 to constitute the frame of the tool. The side rails 10 are further connected by longitudinally spaced transversely extendini;v lJ-shapedy bars 16, the upturned` eX.- tremities 17 of which are riveted as at 1 8. The crossbars 16 are Qonnectedto each other by a longitudinally extending centrally dis-v posed l`shaped member 19, the central flange 2O of whichv depends from the lower side of the frame and is adapted to bereceived between the jawsv of a bench vise A or any other suitable supporting means. A U-shaped clip 21 is secured to the upper side or head of the T-member 19 and4 the upstanding arms 22 thereof are provided with aligned apertures adjacent the medial portion of their upper ends to receive aneyepin 23 the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth. The rear end bloclrl. of the frame is provided with a longitudinally threaded bore 24 through which the threaded Shanks of a screw 25 extends, said screw *being provided with a multi-faced manipulating' head 26 at its outer end and a conical or pointed extremity 27 at its inner end. The forward or front block 14 is provided with an inwardly projecting annular sleeve 218 which is preferably formed as an integral part of the block and the diameter of which is appropriate' to be received between the. annular boss B and the teeth C of the differential gear E secured to the inner end of the yaxle section F. The internal diameter of the sleeve 28 snugly receives the boss B as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. Ilhe inner end of the.
axle section is provided with an annular groove G adjacent its end which receivesthe G lie witliinwthe` annular bossl B and yserve to prevent outward axial displacement of the axle section from the gear. The gear is further keyed for rotation with the axle by the provided with a multi-faced manipulating head 31 at its outer end and a conical or pointed extremity 32 at itsvinner end. A supporting plate 33 having laterally projecting trunnions 34C received in the aligned bearing openings 35 in the opposite side rails. is mounted within the frame adjacent the forward or front end block la for rocking movement. The supporting plate is provided with a central opening 36 of an appropriate diameter to snugly receive the axle section F and the same is provided with laterally extending notches 37 at diametrically opposite sides of the central opening 36.
In use of the tool for the purpose of removing the gear E from the axle section F, the supporting plate 33 is rocked toithe angular position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l and the outer extremity K of the axle is inserted through the central opening 36 and shifted axially until the gear E is positioned relative thereto to permit of the downward swinging of the outer extremity until the axle section is in a plane parallel to the tool frame at which point said axle section will lie within the 'tl-shapedclip 2l after which the eye pin 23 is inserted. rlhe axle section and gear are then advanced axially toward the block 14 until the annular boss B is inserted within the inner open end of the sleeve 2.8. The screw 25 is then manipulated to advance the conical or pointed inner extremity 27 against the outer extremity K of the axle section F and continued manipulation thereof will force the inner grooved extremity G of the axle section beyond theA outer end of the boss B, thus permitting ofthe displacement of the differential gear lock ring H. rlhis i displacement may be observed through a sight opening 38 provided in the sleeve 28. After the ring H is displaced, the screw 25 lis retracted and the screw 30 is manipulated to advance the conical or pointed extremity 32 into engagement with the inner end of the axle. Continued manipulation of the screw will advance the axle and gear into engagement with the supportpin inserted, and the inner end of said axle is then advanced or shifted to dispose the same within the opening 36 of the supporting plate 33. 28 with the boss B inserted within the open end and the axle is advanced and forced through the hub of the gear by manipulating the screw 25 against the outer extremity K. A tool for effecting the connection and -disconnection of a differential gear and axle section having a frame including means for supporting the axle section for axial movement, means at one end ofthe frame engageable with the geary for limiting the axial movement thereto in opposite directions, means movable through the opposite end of the frame and engageable with one extremity of the axle section for e'ecting relative axial movement of the same with respect to the gear in one direction whereby The gear is mounted within the sleeve to permit of the disengagement and .re-
moval 0f the gear retaining means, and means movable through the firstA mentioned end of the frame and engageable with the opposite extremity of the axle section for effecting relative axial shifting movement of said axle section through the gear and the removal of the same therefrom.
2. A tool of the character set forth em b'odying a frame, elements carried by said frame for supporting and associating an axle section therewith for axial movement longitudinally of the frame, an element at one extremity of the frame constituting together with one of the supporting elements means with which a gear on the axle section is adapted to engage for limiting its longitudinal movements in the frame, and independent means respectively movable through the opposite ends of the frame for engagement with the opposite ends of the axle to force and shift the same axially in `opposite directions relative to the gear upon engagement of the gear with the means for limiting its movement.
3. A tool for effecting the connection or disconnection of a differential gear and axle section with one another, comprising a frame elements on said frame for supporting the axle section for axial movement I in opposite directions, an element at one extremity constituting together with one of the supporting elements means for limiting axial movement of the gear and free axial movement of the axle and means mounted in the opposite ends of the frame for independent movement and engageablevrespectively with the opposite extremities of the axle section for effecting axial movements thereof respectively in opposite directions, whereby the axle is moved relative to the gear upon engagement oic said gear with the elements which limit its axial movement.

In a tool :tor effecting the connection or disconnection of a gear with an axle section, a frame embodying elements for supporting the axle section for axial movement longitudinally of the frame, an element adjacent one end of the frame having an opening through which the axle may extend and spaced from one of the-supporting elements to constitute together therewith means with which the opposite sides of the gear may coact to limit the axial movement of the gear in opposite directions, and independent means respectively adjustable through the Opposite ends of the frame and engageable with the opposite extremities of the axle section, for shifting the saine axially in opposite directions whereby the axleis moved with respect to the gear when the gear encounters one of the means which limits its movement.
5. ln a. tool for effecting the connection or disconnection of a gear with an axle section, a frame embodying elements for supporting the axle section for axial movement longitudinally of the frame, an element adjacent one end of the frame having an opening through which the axle may extend and spaced from one of the supporting elements to constitute together therewith means with which the opposite sides of the geary may coact to limit the axial movement of the gear in opposite directions, means threadedly adjustable through the opposite ends oi the frame for engagement respectively with the opposite extremities of the axle section for moving said axle section relative to the gear upon engagement of the gear with the means which limits its axial movement in opposite directions.

A tool for eiecting the disasseinbling of a gear with an axle in which the gear is keyed to the axle and retained against separation in one direction by an expansion ring normally seated and retained in the groove by engagementwith a boss on the gear comprising a frame, elements carried by said frame for supporting the axle Jfor axial movement, an apertured member at one extremity of the iframe through which the axle may extend, said member together with one of the supporting elements constitutingl means between which the gear is mounted for limited axial movement in opposite directions, means engageable with one extremity of the axle section for eilecting relative axial movement of the same with respect to the gear in one direction for disengaging and removing the retaining means, and means engageable with the opposite extremity of the axle section for effecting relative axial movement of the axle with respect to the gear in the opposite direction for forcing the axle from the gear.
7 A tool of the character described comprising an elongated rectangular frame including spaced side rails and end blocks, a sleeve extending inwardly from one of said blocks, an axle supporting element spaced therefrom and pivoted between the side rails, said elements having a central aperture for the reception of the axle, a supporting and retaining element adjacent the opposite end of the frame for' supporting the axle therein for axial movement, and jack screws extending through the opposite end blocks of the frame, as and for the pur-y pose specified.
