To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ED\VARD C. MmssNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pneumatic hammers and to the novel form of clip for attaching or connecting the rivet set or working tool to the forward end of the barrel or cylinder of the hammer, which clip is shown and described in an original application tiled by me on November 12, 1900, Serial No. 36,212, which application has since issued as Patent No. 822,146, dated May 29, 1906, and of which the present application is a di vision.
The object of my invention is to provide an e'tlicient and reliable clip of the character referred to, the various features of advantage and utility whereof will be understood from the description hereinafter given.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pneumatic hammer, to which my clip is shown applied for holding or connecting a rivet set to the forward end of the cylinder of the hammer; Fig. 2 a sectional view of the forward end of the cylinder and of the clip showing the rivet set for the most part in elevation, said scction being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2 but on a somewhat larger scale.
Referring to the present embodiment of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings and using the same reference characters as in the patent aforesaid, the barrel or cylinder 4 is adapted to receive at its front end the working tool such as the rivet set 34. In the present instance, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the front end or bore of the cylinder is provided with a sleeve or bushing 85, into whose bore snugly fits the shank of said rivet set. Inasmuch as it is desirable and in fact required in a practical riveting hammer to have the rivet set or other working tool removably connected with the cylinder so as to practically form a part thereof when in use, but at the same time to provide for sutlicient play or longitudinal movement of one with respect to the other, I provide the novel form and construction of clip which forms the subject matter of this application.
As herein shown, this clip comprises a pair of substantially semi-circular pieces or sections 38 of sheet metal and provided at their rearward ends with inturned flanges 37, which are adapted to be held at the forward end of the barrel or cylinder, in the present instance by a groove 36. This groove is here formed in the sleeve or bushing 35, inasmuch as the same projects beyond and in line with the front end of the barrel or cyl inder proper, such bushing, however, being practically a component part of the cylinder. The semi-circular pieces or sections 38 are held or clamped in place with a yielding pressure by means of the resilient split ring 39 of sheet metal, which fits in the groove 40 provided therefor on the outer surface of said pieces or sections 38, whereby the latter constitute clamping jaws for holding the rivet set in operative position at the front end of the cylinder. In order to provide for relative movement longitudinally between the rivet set and the cylinder, I pro vide such jaws on their inner faces with a circumferential groove 41 and the rivet set with an annular rib or flange 42, movable longitudinally in said groove. The rib and grooves above described are preferably beveled to facilitate the removal of the clip device and thereby facilitate the insertion and removal of the rivet set or other working tool. The shank of the rivet set fits into the sleeve or bushing 35 sutliciently tight to close the forward end of the barrel or cylinder to insure the return of the piston (not shown).
The construction and arrangement of the clip is such that the rivet set is capable of a limited longitudinal movement independently of the barrel or cylinder, with the result that in the operation of the hammer sufficient play or movement is provided for the rivet set, to the end that the clip is relieved from the blows against the rivet set which would otherwise be imparted thereto. My construction of clip is reliable and eifi cient in operation and can be readily applied and removed for the purpose of inserting and removing the rivet set.
I claim:
1. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of a pneumatic hammer comprising two sections having theiredges inturned to form flanges adapted to engage the hammer and its rivet set, and a ring fitting upon said sections.
2. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of a pneumatic hammer comprising two semi-circu lar sections adapted to engage the hammer and its rivet set, and a spring ring fitting upon said sections.
3. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of a pneumatic hammer comprising two semi-circular sections adapted to engage the hammer and its rivet set, and a split spring ring fitting upon and substantially covering said sections.
4. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of a pneumatic hammer comprising in combination with a rivet set and with the hammer structure which has toward its front end a circumferential groove, two sections having flanges engaging said groove and also arranged to engage said rivet set, and a spring ring arranged to fit over said sections.
5. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of a pneumatic hammer comprising in combination with a rivet set and with the hammer structure which has toward its front end a circum-' ferential groove, two sections having flanges engaging said groove and also having an interior groove 41, said rivet set having a flange rib 42 movable in groove 41, and a spring ring arranged to fit over said sections.
6. In a pneumatic hammer, a clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of the cylinder comprising, in connection with such cylinder, and with a sleeve or bushing in the front end of the cylinder in which the rivet set fits, a pair of curved sections having flanges and adapted to engage the rivet set, said bushing having at its front end a groove engaged by said flanges, and a spring clip arranged to fit over said sections and clamp them to the bushing and the rivet set.
7. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of the hammer structure, comprising an inner member substantially encircling and adapted to engage the said end of the hammer structure and the rivet set, and an outer resilient member encircling and clamping the inner. member into its said engagement.
8. A clip for holding the rivet set or the like in place at the front end of the hammer structure, comprising a pair of substantially semi-circular inner members adapted to engage said end of the hammer structure and the rivet set, and an outer resilient member for clamping said inner member.
9. In a pneumatic hammer, a clip for holding a rivet set or the like in place at the front end of the hammer comprising a pair of inner members arranged to engage the cylinder and the rivet set, and to substantially encircle the same, and an outer resilient member for clamping said inner members, the said outer and inner members having interlocking engagement.
10. A clutch for pneumatic hammers comprising clamping-jaws and a resilient split ring encircling them, said aws being adapted to be mounted upon a pneumatic hammer and to substantially encircle the same.
11. A clutch for pneumatic hammers comprising two semicircular clamping jaws and a spring encircling them, said clutch being adapted to be mounted upon a pneumatic hammer, and shoulders on their inner faces adapted to interlock with devices provided therefor on the shank of a tool in said hammer.
