NTE@ STATES ELWOOD G. BELL, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATERPROOF CIGARETTE CASE.
Application led November 18, 1921.
To all wwm it may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, ELwooD G. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waterproof Cigarette Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has' relation to waterproof cigarette cases, and has for an object to provide a case which is adapted to contain a quantity of cigarettes and matches, with means to seal the case against the entrance of water, and means to secure the case to a bathing trunk belt, or the like, thus rendering the device particularly adaptable to the use of swimmers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a water-proof cigarette case of the character above set forth including a container for matches, whereby the container may be removed from the case to permit the withdrawal of a match, and an abrasive surface being provided on the container upon which the match may be struck.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a match container in a cigarette case of this nature which is connected to the closure thereof so that it may be withdrawn without the necessity of placing the hands in engagement therewith which is especially desirable when the hands are wet or soiled.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention has relation to the improvements in the details of construction and the arrangement of the correlated parts, to be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
lin the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of a cigarette case constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a view thereof in vertical section, Y
Figure 3 is a view of the case in top plan with the closure removed,
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of the match container,
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of the match container, and
Figure 6 is a view in section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 4. v
With reference to the drawings, 10 indi- Cates the casing which is oblong in cross section and is constructed preferably of Serial No. 516,122.
metal. One side of the casing is rounded and at one end of the casing and adjacent the rounded side there is provided an open ing l1 surrounded by a circular flange 12. A partition 13 is mounted in the case to eX- tend transversely thereacross to define two compartments 14 and 15. The partition is located diametrically across the opening 11 so that the compartment 14 will be much smaller than the other compartment. The cigarettes indicated at 16 are inserted through the opening 11 and into the compartment 15, while in the compartment 14 there is inserted a match contai-ner 17. This container is semi-circular in end elevation thus being semicylindrical, so as to closely tit the shape of the compartment 14, and the rounded side is cut away to form an opening 18 through which the matches are inserted and withdrawn. A pair of ianges 19 are formed on the flat side of the container to form a guide and securing means for a strip of abrasive material 20 upon which the matches may be struck.
An eye-lug 21 is provided at one end of the container. A closure 22 is provided to closely fit the flanged opening 11 of the casing so as to preclude the entrance of moisture. A short section of chain 23 is con` nected at the inner end to the closure by an eye-lug 24 formed thereon and at its other end to the eye-lug 21 formed on the match container, so that the match container may be pulled from out of its compartment 14 without the necessity of placing the hands thereon. A pair of spring fingers 24 are provided, each having one end secured to the casing so that the fingers may be engaged with the edge of a belt to support the case. The fingers are preferably corrugated transversely to prevent accidental disengagement of the casing from the belt.
Thus, it will be seen that I have provided a novel cigarette case which is adapted particularly to the use of swimmers, since it is always available for use, being worn at the front, and since it will insure the retention of the cigarettes in a dry condition and allow the user thereof to obtain a match from the match container included therein without the necessity of placing his hands in engagement therewith and imparting any moisture to the matches.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, l realize that in practice, various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts, without departing from the spirit of theinvention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A cigarette case including a casing having a rounded side and an opening in one end adjacent said rounded side, a partition in the casing extendingr across the opening dening two compartments, a
Vmatch container substantially semicylindrical located in the smaller of 'the two comartments, said container having an opening in one side wall, a pair of ianges on the flat side of the container, a strip of abrasive material held between said flanges, and a closure for opening the casing.
2. A cigarette case including a casing having one rounded side, and an o ening in one end adjacent said rounded si e, a partition in the casing extending across the opening defining two compartments, a match container substantially semicylindrical located in the smaller of the compartments, said container having an opening in one side wall, a pair of flanges on the fiat side of the container, a strip of abrasive material held between said flanges, 4a closure for the opening of the casing, and flexible means connecting vthe match container to the closure.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELWOOD G. BELL.
