Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. MCGOY, OF MILLERS FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'roL-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 146,263, dated January 6, 1874; application iivled July 2, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MoGoY, of Millers Falls, in the county of Franklin and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool- Handle; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speci- Iication.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the handle and tool by means of which they are connected together, as will be hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the handle and tool combined. Fig. 2 is a side view of the tool. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the Clampnut. Fig. 4 is a section ofthe plug in which the tool is held.
In the" figures, A represents the wooden portion or body of the handle, which has secured to it a ferrule or thimble, B, made of metal. This ferrule has a slot, 1'., cut in it, and is provided with a male screw-thread on its outer end. Said ferrule is hollow, and in its outer end is inserted a movable plug made of metal, having lugs upon two sides of it, which drop into recesses in the ferrule and prevent the said plug from revolving. Au cap or nut, C, having a suitabe thread cut in it is passed over and fits upon the end of the ferrule. The p nut O is formed, as represented, with a ange,
e, partially covering its end, and with a slot, d, which allows the tool end to pass into the plug The tool end, that passes into the plug, is provided with a shoulder, a, and with a wedge-shaped side, as seen from .fr to w. The shoulder op catches, after passing into the nut C, under the iiange e, which holds it iii-place. The plug O has an opening or socket in it to receive the end of the tool, and one side of the opening is inclined, as represented in Fig. 4. The inclined end of the tool strikes against the inclined side of the opening in the plug, which forces the shoulder of the tool under the flan ge on the nut, and, by means of the two, the tool is firmly secured.
The nut may be screwed down easily upon the shoulder a, so thatthe tool is perfectlysecure and tight.
By a partial revolution of the nut, the slot d is brought over the shoulder a, and then the tool is readily removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ferrule B, the cap C, and the plug O, constructed substantially as described, in combination with a tool constructed as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of June, 1873. I
WM. H. MecoY.
