NITED STATES PAT NT EEIQE.
JOHN TUNSTED, or ALLENTowN, NE YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HAL TO JAMES A. VINCENT, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE AUG ERl-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 543,413, dated July 23, 1895.
Application fileti otoher 26, 1894:"- s i l N 527,084. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TUNSTED, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allentown, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auger-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled [0 in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which-'- r5 Figure 1 is a plan view of the central part of an auger-handle embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the movable plate; Fig. 5, an end view of the same. Figs. 6 and 7 are side views of a bolt having a tapered head. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view taken through the central por tion of the handle, and Fig. 9 is a detail view of the retaining-pin. z 5 The object of my invention is to provide an auger-handle of improved construction, which is provided with an opening in which the A shank of the bit may be placed and held therein by means of a movable plate which is retained in the opening in the handle and is slid against the shank of the bit by means of a bolt having a tapered head, one side of the head bearing against an end wall of the opening in the handle while the other side 3 5 impinges against one end of the plate, so that the bit may be firmly held in engagement with the handle.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fullyset forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Adesignates the auger-handle, the ends bein g preferably socketed to receive extensions. The central portion of the handle A is'pro- I 5 vided with a vertical slot a, which extends beyond the center on one side, as shown, and
is tapered, the wider portion being at the lower end. The wall at the end of the slot nearest the center of thehandle is'provided with an inwardly projecting portion a at its 7 lower end, and opposite thereto is a trans verse wall a serve to hold the plate in posiverse wall or having an opening a therein. The handle is also provided with apertures to receive a pin a which intersects the slot'a transversely, as shown. 5 5
B designates a plate, which is tapered vertically to conform to the taper of the slot a, and one end of this plate is inclined and provided with a projecting portion 12, while the otherend is straight and provided with an open-ended slot 1) and a cut-away portion or recess 11 O designates a locking-key, which is prefer ably in the form of a bolt having a tapered head a, one side of the head being straight while the other is inclined, and the threaded portion of the bolt is adapted to be passed through the opening a inthe handle and be engaged by a thumb-nut c of ordinary construction. 0
To assemble the'parts for use the plate B is placed within the slot in the handle, so that the open-ended slot therein will engage the transverse pin a The locking-key O is then passed through the slot a and opening a andthe thumb-nut isscrewed upon the threaded end thereof. \Vhen it is desired to clamp a bit in the holder the nut is turned to permit the key to be raised and the plate moved in the slot, so that the shank of the So bit can be inserted between the taperedends of the slot and plate, the projections a and b lying immediately under the head of the bit. Now, by turning the thumb-nut the tapered head of the bolt will be drawn within the slot in the handle and impinging against the end of the plate B will force the same against the head of the bit, so as to hold said bit securely in place. The pin a and transtion when the bit is removed therefrom.
The device is simple, and the handle may be made entirely of metal, or if desired only the central portion need be of metal andthe grasping portions of Wood and attached-to '5 said central portionin the usual manner.
Having thus described my'invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic shank socket for auger handles, 1C0
comprising the part A having a vertical slot a which is tapered in cross-section and provided at its lower end with projections a and a the projection a having an opening a adjacent to the vertical wall of the slot, a pin a which intersects the slot, a movable plate B one end of which is inclined and provided with a-projecting portion 1), the straight end wall of the plate having an open-ended slot 27 and below the same a recess (2 and a key (3 having a tapered head and threaded portion which passes through the opening a for re engagement with a nut, the parts being organized substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
