Description

l.-T HAYDEN.
Compression Faucets. s N0, 146,253, Patented`lan.6,1874. W
UNITED STATES JAMES T. HAYDEE, 0E CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPRESSICN-FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,253, dated January 6, 1874; application filed November 12, 1873.
OASE B.
To all whom t may concern:
Beitknown that I, JAMES T. HAYDEN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of-vMassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Compression-Faucets 5 and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification7 is a description of my invention suticient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
The invention has particular reference to a method of packing the faucet 5 and consists in coinbiningwith the screw-cap a screw-threaded ring, screwing into a nutthread in the under side of the screw-cap, the spindle extending loosely through this ring, andthe ring havin g guide-projections extending through slots in the nut-threaded valve, to keep the valve from rotating as it is moved to and from the seat by the rotation of the screw-threaded spindle werking in the nut-threaded valve.
The drawing represents a faucet embodying the invention.
V"Figure l shows the construction in sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
a denotes the body of the bibb or faucet; b, the inlet, and c the outlet, tubes; d, the valveseat; e, the valve; f, the screw-spindle; g, the
cap. The valve is raised from and carried to the seat by turning thespindle, as in other 'faucets of this class, without rotation of the valve. The spindle is made with a iiange, h, against which the cap bears, and under this ange is a washer, i, which washer is pressed against the under. surface of the cap, to pack the faucet at the cap bythe ring This rin g is loose upon the spindle, but it has a peripheral screw thread, l, which works in a nutthread, m, in the inside of the cap, so that by screwing the ring up into the cap the washer is tightly compressed between the cap and ring, the cap and spindle being imperviously packed by such compression. From the ring extend the ears or projections a, which, passing into the slots o of the valve, serve as guides to the valve to prevent its rotation.
I claim- In combination with a compression-faucet,
