JOHN DEMAREST, OF MOTT HAVEN, NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE J. L. MOTT IRON-WORKS, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IM PROVEMENT IN STOP-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,800, dated December 15, 1374; application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN DEMAREST, ofMott Haven, New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stop-Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g forming a part of this specification, in which the drawing is a longitudinal section.
A represents an inlet, and B an outlet, pipe, between which is placed a hand-operated ringgrooved valve, E, packed by a band, H, and having the handled stem E, which works in a water-tight packing, and is held at difierent adjustments by a screw, Gr. So far there is no novelty of idea or in the construction of the parts named. I make the pipe B with an enlargement or seat, D, and construct the valve E at the upper end with a large flange, e, that cannot pass the seat D, while on the lower down in the narrow throat of said pipe. By this relative construction of pipe and valve the band His carried down by the piston, so that it remains between the valve-body and the pipe, making a perfectly water-tight joint. When, however, the piston is withdrawn, the lower flange c raises this packing-band, and allows it to clasp the body of valve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
The combination of annularlygrooved valve E and pipe B, the former having a large upper and a comparatively small lower flange, while the latter has an enlargement or seat, D, with packing-ring H, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
