Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. CONNELL, OF KENSINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM, WATER, AND GAS COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,240, dated February 10, 1874; application filed December 30, 1872.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN P. CONNELL, of Kensington, Hartford county, Connecticut, have invented an Improved Globe-Valve, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side view of the Whole valve. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in central vertical longitudinal section.
The letter a indicates the globular part of the valve; 1), the entrance-pipe; and c, the exit-pipe. d is the partition in which is the valve-seat d, facing toward the entrance-pipe. e is the valve proper, and f the valve-stem, having on its outer end the operating-Wheel 9. There is a screw-thread, f, on the stem f, taking into the nut or collar a', resting in a corresponding recess in the neck h, and held from turning by the pin 1" projecting from the nut and into a corresponding recess in the neck. The letter g indicates the stuffing'box, screwin g upon the neck h.
It will be observed that the neck h is solid, except the hole for the valve-stem, and can therefore be cast in one piece with the globe to and pipes b 0. Not only this, but the pressure of the fluid coming in at the pipe 1) tends to always close the valve into its seat and make it tight; and a valve thus made with solid neck h is not liable to explode by having the plug-screw driven out.
I claim as my invention- The neck h, solid except a hole for the valvestem, and made upon and in one piece with the body a, in combination with the threaded vah'e-stem f, the nut held from turning, and the stuffing-box g, all constructed, arranged, and designed for operation and use, substantially as described.
Dated October 13, 1873.
JOHN 1?. CONNELL.
