ATTORNEY Patented July 17, 1923.

CLIP GUIDE.
Application filed July 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD II. Panno'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los-Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Clip Guides, of which the fol owing is a specification.
This invention relates to means for positioning the blank sheets of paper fed onto the platen of a printing press.
It is the object of the invention to provide guide clips, which may be readily clamped in adjusted position upon the usual top sheet received upon the platen of a press, the clips forming abutment elements against which the blank sheets of paper are fed, 1n order to properly position the paper during the printing operation.
Itis a further object of the invention to provide spring fingers which may be employed in conjunction with the cl ps, so that the fingers will hold the sheets of paper down on the top sheet, as the paper is fed against the abutment elements. The sheets of paper are thus prevented from becoming disarranged by sliding over the clips.
Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following de scription of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a corner of a top sheet showing the improved guide clips mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is perspective view of one of the guide clips.
In printing upon a usual platen press, a packing pad is placed upon the platen, and a top sheet as shown at 1 in the drawlngs, is received upon the pad. In the present 1nvention, guide clips are detachably and adjustably clamped upon the top sheet, so as to form abutments for positioning the sheets of paper upon which the printed impression is to be made.
One of these guide clips is shown in detail in Fig. 3, and comprises a blank of any suitable material, preferably metal. The blank consists of a base 2, which at its front is bent upwardly and then downwardly, to form the vertical abutment surface 3. pair of spaced ears 4: extend laterally from either side of base 2, beyond the abutment surface 3. At the sides of the rear of the base are depending prongs 5, and upstand- 1922. Serial are. 573,930.
ing lips 6, which latter are substantially in alinement with the ends of surface 3, and the inner ends of ears 4.
A spring strip 7 extends across the clip upon base 2, and in alinement with the notches 8 formed between the ears of each pair at the sides of the clip. The spring may be retained in position by overlying lips 10 stamped from the base 2.
The end portions of the spring are bent downwardly in to notches 8 as shown at 11, and are then reversely b'ent upon themselves as shown at 12. These reversely bent ends terminate in upturned gripping means 13 adapted to be grasped in the fingers for manipulating the spring.
The clip may be used in the form thus described, but preferably, spring fingers are arranged upon the clips, so as to project forwardly beyond said clips.
Each of these fingers consists of a spring strip 15, curved upwardly slightly at its forward end. The fingers may be positioned at one or both sides of the clips, and extend across ears 4 and project forwardly beyond the abutment surface The fingers lie upon the end portions ofspring 7, and beneath the reversely bent portions 12 of the spring, with the rear ends of the fingers in lateral abutment against lips 6.
It will thus be seen that the fingers will be held in position by the spring, while per- I mitting the ready removal or longitudinal adjustment of said fingers.
In using the improved clip guides, markings let for the edges of the sheetsof paper to be printed, are made upon top sheet 1, in usual manner. Pairs of slits 16 are then cut in the top sheet wherever it is desired to place one of the guides. The slits of each pair extend from a marking 14 toward the outer edge of the top sheet, and preferably di-vergently curve as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
A clip is positioned upon the top sheet between-the slitsof a pair, "with ears 4f inserted through said slits beneath the top sheet, it being understood that the slits are suitably spaced to accommodate the clip in this position.
As the clip is thus positioned, the ends of spring 7 are lifted by compressing the gripping means 13, so that said spring ends will rest upon the upper surface of the top sheet.
The clip is adjusted lengthwise of the slits until the abutment surface 3 is at the marking 15, and the spring is then released so that the ends 11 thereof will clamp the clip.
upon the top sheet. When the clip is in position, the prongs 5 are also forced into the top sheet to further insure the retention of the clip in its adjusted position.
With the clip positioned as thus described, the lower edge of abutment surface 3 rests upon the top sheet between slits 16, and the portions of the top sheet beyond the slits are elevated slightly upon ears A. As a con sequence, when the edge of a sheet of paper fed onto the top sheet, abuts against surface 8 for properly positioning the paper, it will be raised slightly by the'portions of the top sheet beyond the slits, and the possibility of the sheet of paper catching in the crack between surface 3 and the top sheet, is
thus eliminated.
The spring fingers 15, when employed, extend beyond surface 3, and will thus slip over a sheet of paper fed onto the top sheet and abutting against the guide clips, so as to hold the paper down on the top sheet, and prevent the same sliding over the clips.
While I have illustrated and described but one practical embodiment of the device,
it will-be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination,
and arrangement of\parts, without depart- I ing from the spirit ofthe invention.
