SHEET-METAL CUTTING-OFF MACHINE.
Application filed December 22, 1921. Serial No. 524,091.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal cutting-ofi' machines, generally of the form shown and described in my application filed May 22, 1920, Serial No. 383,441, and the object of my improvement in the present instance is to produce a sheet metal cutting-oil machine that differs from that referred to in that the actual cutting of the sheet metal is effected by means of a cutting-0d device that is driven separately from the feeding mechanism, means being provided for effecting a tripping of said cutting-ofl' device at the proper time within the period or cycle, as related to the other details of the operations involved.

Figure 8 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the connecting pin or driving pin for connecting the sheet metal cutting-off mechanism with the corresponding driving pulley, the said pin being in the position of engagement with the cooperating lug on said pulley.
My improved sheet metal cuttin -ofi' ma chine comprises a frame 10 that is appreciably elongated and supports adjacent the middle portlon a lower shaft 10 for driving the feeding and tripping mechanism, an upper shaft 11 that operates the cutting mechanism, and intermediate said shafts 10 and 11 is a blade supporting frame 12 that serves to su port the cutting blades. 7

18 and back of said feed rolls 17 and 18 is a set 16 of straightening rolls.
The upper, moving blade 14 is supported by a gate 19 which is the part that coopcrates with the ways 15, and said gate 19 is operatively connected to the upperfshaft 11 in any proper manner.

driven from a motor 20 in substantially the same manner as in the machine shown and described in the application mentioned and may also be operatively connected in a similar manner to the rolls mentioned.
,Thus the motor 20, as shown, through the medium of a relatively small gear 21 drives a larger gear'22 that is on the counter-shaft 23. On said shaft 23 is a clutch 24 that can be moved to one side or the other to provide a choice of speeds.
By throwing the clutch 24 towards the side of the gear wheel 22, as shown in the plan view in Fig. 2, the counter-shaft 23 is operatively connected through the medium of the gears 25 and other gearing devices to the bull gear 26 that is the driving gear for the lower or main shaft 10 on which it is mounted. A different speed is obtained and connecting devices of ordinary form.

The intermittent driving of the shaft 29 is effected through the medium of a relatively small gear33 that is loosely mounted on one end of said shaft 29 and cooperating devices in the form of a one-way clutch and a frictional retarding device. The oneway clutch comprises an inner member 34 that isvirtu'ally an extension of the structure of the gear 33 inwardly along'the shaft 29 and has a set of V-shaped notches 35 in the periphery and an outer member 36 of shell-like form that encloses said periphery and notches 35 and is rigidly secured to said shaft 29. The locking devices for the oneway clutch comprise spring plunger devices of ordinary form, consisting of a contacting roll 37 in each notch 35 that is backed by a ,pair of springs 38, the parts being constructed and arranged to lock for driving in one direction only, corresponding to one direction of rotation of the small gear 33.
The driving of the shaft 29 is effected in opposition to the frictional retarding device, which later comprises the following parts :--The outer clutch member 36 is extended along the shaft 29 in the form of a friction drum 39 that cooperates with an elongated spring device 40 that is supported from the main frame or bed 42 and is provided with a contacting shoe 41 of wood or other suitable materialfor contacting with the periphery of the drum 39.
Said spring device 40 may be in the form of a strap of metal that is secured to the 'bed 42 by means of a screw 43 and the spring tension thereof may means of a second screw 44.
The driving of the small gear 33 is effected by means of a rack 45 that is mounted on one side of the bed 42 for longitudinal sliding movement and is provided with a bracket 46 that serves as the means for connecting with one end of the connecting be regulated by 7 rod 47. The other end of said connecting rod 47 is connected to a crank-pin 48 on the crank-disk 49 that is mounted on one end of the lower or main shaft 10.
The means described above for driving the feed rolls and the straightening rolls correspond substantially to those shown and described in the application mentiond.

The upper-shaft 11 has'a driving pulley 54 that is loosely mounted thereon and is driven-by-means of a belt 55 andsaid driving pulley 54 is connected with the shaft 11 in any proper manner, involving the use of a suitable clutch device, responsive to the elevation of the tripping rod 52 by means of the projection 53.
The means shown comprise a sliding key 56 that is backed by a spring 57 at one end thereof and the operation of which is controlled by means of a swinging arm 58. One end of said arm 58 is supported by means of a fixed pivot 59 and the other end thereof is connected by means of a pin 60 with the upper end of the tripping rod 52.
The spring 57 tends to project the key 56 longitudinally so as to be brought into registration with a suitable projection or lug on some part of the driving pulley 54 whereby the shaft 11 is operatively connected with said driving pulley and effects such move-- elevated by the tripping rod 52. ping effect of the cam projection 53 is momentary, so that the swinging arm drops immediately after such tripping and assumes its normal position, and, furthermore, said arm 58 is provided with means for cooperating with the pin 56 for retracting the same and holding it in the retracted and normal position.
Thus a drum structure 61 is provided adj acent the driving pulley 54 and rigidly mounted on the shaft 11 and this is provided with a transverse slot 62 for the pin 56 that is adjacent the periphery though actually slightly below the same. A circumferential groove 64 is provided in the periphery 63 that communicates with the transverse slot 62 and which serves as a way in which the opposed and adjacent portion of the swing-.
A brake device may be provided for the drum 61.
The details mentioned for driving and controlling the cutting mechanism form no part of the present invention.
It will be noted that in the present instance the power for effecting the cutting of the sheet metal that is fed to the cutters is provided by a separate source, independent of that Which drives the bull-gear shaft. Said bull-gear shaft, however, controls the operation of the tripping means for setting into operation the said cutting power, and this operation is synchronized 1n the proper relation to the feeding devices that are operated from said bull-gear.
The means for effecting the feeding are substantially like those shown and described in the application above referred to, comprising the combination of driving means, a oneway clutch, and retarding means, whereby the feeding is effected in one direction only and reverse movement of the feeding devices proper is positively prevented.
'I claim as my invention A cutting-01f machine for sheet metal comprising a bed, feed rolls and a cutter-gate supported by said bed, a bull-gear shaft and a one-Way intermediate shaft supported by said bed, mechanism operative responsive to rotation of said bull-gear shaft for effecting a reciprocating movement of said ate, gearing interconnecting said intermecfiate shaft and rolls, driving means for driving. said intermediate shaft from said bull-gear shaft comprising a one-way clutch, and retarding means on said intermediate shaft, said retarding means operating in opposition to said driving means under driving conditions of operation and serving to check reverse movement of said intermediate shaft.
