Abstract
566,596. Drawing, straightening, and cutting-off rod or wire. AJAX MANUFACTURING CO. July 15, 1942, No. 9864. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1941. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for working wire stock 21 has a pair of feed rolls 34, 35, Figs. 2 and 6, 34 being mounted in a frame 46 and 35 in a head 43 which is hinged to and movable in guides in said frame, a compound lever acting on the head 43 to close the rollers on the stock 21. This is intermittently fed and drawn, while stationary, by a moving device 20, as described in Specification 483,884, and is then fed, through straighteners 38, 39, by rolls 34 ... 37 intermittently driven from the oscillating shaft 28 of the device 20 through a lever 63 having an adjustable throw, a link 64, a one-way clutch 65a, toothed gearing 42, Fig. 6, and chain gearing 66. The horizontal and vertical roller straighteners 38, 39 have their three centre rollers adjusted to produce overbending. The straightened stock passes shearing cutters 71, 72, Fig. 4, and through a tubular guide 70 until it engages a stop 89, Fig. 5, mounted on a screwed rod 90 which can be rotated by hand-operated gearing 91 to adjust the stop to give the length of blank required. The rod 90 has a collar 94, Fig. 14, rear view, engaged by a spring-pressed lever 96 and a collar 95 engaging a spring 116 mounted in a lever 113. This has an arm 114a pressed against a cam 123, on a normally stationary shaft 81, by a compression spring 120. When the work engages the stop 89 this and the rod 90 are moved slightly, against the action of the spring 116, thus turning the lever 96, its shaft 97, and a catch 98, Fig. 12, thus releasing a four-armed lever 99 which is turned by a spring 106 clockwise to cause its arm 99c to release a clutchpart 88, thereby allowing the fly-wheel 84, Fig. 5, to drive the shaft 81 through one revolution. This rotation of the shaft 81 causes an eccentric 83 thereon to reciprocate the cutter 72 and sever the work, a cam 124, Fig. 13, rear view, to act through linkwork 125, 127, 128, 77 to withdraw a shutter 75 and allow the severed work blank 21a to fall into a receptacle 74, the cam 123 to release the arm 114a and allow the spring 120 to move the lever 113 and rod 90 so as to withdraw the stop 89 from the severed blank and then return the parts to the position shown, and finally a cam 102 to operate on the arm 99b, Fig. 12, resetting the four-armed lever 99 and bringing the shaft 81 to rest. This is assisted by a spring 111 and a continuous brake 112, Fig. 4. The shafts 35a, 37a, Fig. 2, are each mounted in a head 43 which is pivoted on an axis 44, Fig. 6, parallel to and behind the stock 21 so that the rollers 35, 37 can move substantially vertically in the frame 46 and these rollers are pressed down to engage the stock by springs 58, Fig. 2, acting through a releasable device 53 and lever 51. The motor 85, Fig. 5, which drives the fly-wheel 84 for operating the one-revolution clutch, also drives, through a chain 132, a shaft 61, Fig. 2, having an adjustable-throw crank 62 which operates the shaft 28. The cut-off mechanism can be operated at any time by moving a handle 135, Fig. 12.
