Be it known that I, MAURICE Lnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Caps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an adjustable cap and has for its object to provide a cap of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means to provide for the conveniently adjusting thereof to fit the head ofthe wearer without producing uncomfortable wrinkles or distorting the appearance of the cap.

A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable cap, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, embodying two overlapping elements constituting a head band a0 depending from and connected to the cap body, and one of said elements having means for adjustably connecting the terminal portions thereof together to provide for the fitting of the cap without the forming or producing of obtrusive wrinkles thereby overcoming an uncomfortable feeling when the cap is Worn.

The invention will be best understood from a 'consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications produce no material departure vfrom thesalient features of the invention as expressed in the ap ended claims,

eferring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a cap body, formed of an suitable material, preferably a fiexible abrio and which has its lower portion contracted. Arranged within the cap body as well as depending from the contracted lower portion thereof, is a lining 2.

Secured in proximity to its upper edge, as

well as intermediate the ends thereof, against the outer face of the back and sides of the contracted lower portion of the cap body 1, 1s a band 5, which depends from the said lower contracted portion of the cap body 1, and opposes the dependin portion of the lining 2, at the back and sides thereof. The lining 2, is secured to the inner face of the band 5, intermediate the ends of the latter and in proximity to the lower edge thereof by rows of stitching 7. The band 5, is stiE- ened by a reinforcement 6, and which is secured to the band by the rows of stitching 7. Thesecuring of the band 5, intermedii ate its ends to the cap body 1, and lining 2, provides the band 5 with disconnected terminal portions, indicated in Figures 1 and 3, vat 8 and 9, and vin Figure 2, at 18 and 19. The rows of stitching 7, are continued to the free termini of the extensions 8 and 9. The

The terminal portion 8, is provided with a buckle 12, so that the disconnected terminal portions 8 and 9, of the band 5, can be overlapped and adjustabl connected to eth er by the extending of t e tapered en 11, of the terminal portion 9, through the buckle 12, carried by the terminal portion 8.

Secured to the contracted lower portion of the cap body 1 at thevfront portion thereof, as well as epending therefrom, is a body portion 1, and the stitching 15, near the lower edge of the strip 13, secures the vlatter to the lining 2. As the strip 13, is

Secured to the outer face of that part of the strip 13, which is connected to the body portion 1, is a pair of loops 22 for the disconnected terminal portions 8 and 9 of the band 5, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3.

Secured to the lower edge of the strip 13, is a forw-ardly projecting visor 3, which has a sweat band 4, secured to the rear end of its inner face and which extends into the cap.

The visor 3, has its 'upper face provided with the male section of the socket fastener as indicated at 23, and which is adapted to detachably engage the female section of the fastener carried by the forwardly projecting portion of the cap body, as indicated at 24.-.'

The band 5 vand strip 13, form what may betermed the head band of the cap, and the said band 5, is constructed of flexible material and with -that part thereof secured to the body 1, non-extensible. The. strip 13,

' is formed of flexible material but that portion thereof which is secured to the body 1,

is non-extensible. The band 5, as well as the strip 13, may be constructed of the same material from which the cap body 1 is formed.

When the band 5, is adjusted to provide for the fitting of the cap to the head of the wearer, the free terminal portions of the strip 13, slide alongthe sides of vthe cap thereby making provision for the take-up and prevent the forming of obtrusive wrinkles.

The termini of the connected portion of the strip are spaced from the' termini of the connected portion of the band. i The connected portion referred-'to in connection with the strip is that part thereof which is se- Meines cured to the body 1, and the connected portion referred to with respect to the band is that part thereof secured to the body 1, and by this arrangement during adjustment' to fit, the free terminals of the band and strip can shift over each other and which relieves the body of thecap from strain when taking u or adjustin and further there is no liability of the sp itting or tearing of the cap during the taking up or adjustment operation, and furthermore the cap may be adjusted as closely to the head of the wearer as is desired.

What is `claimed is 1. A cap comprising a bod havin a contracted lower portion, a sp it ban encircling and depending from said lower portion and secured intermediate its ends to the outer face of the back and to each of the sides'of said lower portion thereby providing oppositely extending free end terminal portions positioned at the front of said lower portion, a strip depending from and arranged against the outer face of the front and a part of each side of said lower portion, said strip secured intermediate its ends for a portion of its length toy the outer face of the front of. said lower portion thereby providing said strip with rearwardly directed free end terminal portions, the free end terminal ortions of said strip sliding directly against the inner face of the connected portion of said split band, the termini of the connected part of. said strip being spaced from the termini of the connected part of said band, and means for adjust-ably connecting the free end terminal portions of the band together for varying ico the size of the cap and for inclosing the connected portion of said strip.

A cap comprising a body having a contracted lower portion, a split band encircling and depending from said lower portion and secured intermediate its ends tothe outer face of the back and to each of the sides of said lower portion thereby providing oppositely extending free end terminal portions-positioned at the front of said lower portion, a strip depending from and arranged against the outer face of the front and a part of each side of said lower portion, said strip secured intermediate its ends for a portion of its length to the outer face of the front of said lower portion thereby providing said strip with rearwardly directed free end terminal portions, the free end terminal portions of said strip sliding directly against the inner face of the connected portion of said split band, the termini of the connected part of said strip being spaced fromthe termini of the connected part of said band, means for adjustably connectling the free end terminal portions of the `band together for varying the size of the ice Leonce@ cap and for inclosing the connected portion strip for maintainin the `free end terminal of said strip, loops connected to the inner portions of the ban against the outer face face near each end of the connected part of of the strip. 10
