My invention relates to improvements in hinges, and the object of my invention is to provide a hinge, especially designed for use upon a tobacco can, which is of simple, durable and inexpensive construction and Y whichcomprises a plate having integral Vspurs or teeth which serve to relatively secure certain elements of the can and which my claims and illustrated by the accompanying, drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of a hinge elementV constructed in accordance with my invention.

In practice, afterthe can has been formed, the can is fitted over a suitable anvil and the hinge plate is fitted along the upper margin of the can with its cut outs 12 in registration` with the cut outs 15 of the can, and of course, spanning the seam 111.

After the hinge plate has been secured as just recited the can lid or cover 16, preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal, cupped, or provided with flanges to overlie the top margin of the can, and having spaced ears 17, is fitted in place and its ears coiled or turned to rotate upon the pintles 11 of the hinge plate. l
A distinct advantage arising from the construction as just described is the tact that the assemblage is greatly simplified as the time consuming use\ of a separate 'or loose pintle is dispensed with.
