SAFETY RAZOR.
Serial No. 456,467.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JAMns ALEX DENBY l VA'rr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 142 Tulse Hill. London, S. W. 2, England, has invented a new and useful Improvement in and Connected with Safety Razors (for which I have filed an application in Great Britainnamely, N0. 3862, dated 9th February 1920) and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention has reference to improvements in and connected with safety razors more especially safety razors of the type wherein the blade and blade guard are relatively adjustable one to the other in a direction which intersects the axis of the razor handle, the razor being preferably of the kind in which the blade can be stroppcd without removing the blade from the razor frame, and in which a visual scale is provided for observing the degree of adjustment between the blade and the guard.
The object of the present invention is to combine with the visual scale for observing the degree of the aforesaid adjustment between the blade and the guard, means for mechanically obtaining the required adjustment so that an accurate degree of adjustment or setting is obtainable.
The present invention comprises a safety razor of the aforesaid kind, characterized by the combination therewith of mechanical means for obtaining the required adjustment between the blade and the guard relative to the said scale.
The preferred means of carrying the pres ent invention into effect will now be described in conjunction with the accompany ing sheet of drawings wherein like numerals indicate like parts in the several views. The views are drawn to an enlarged scale so as to more clearly illustrate the invention.
Fig. 1 is a view looking on the back of the razor the adjusting screw being removed.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation through the centre line of the razor with the adjusting screw in say the mid position, and
Fig. 3 is a plan of the razor.
The razor comprises a guard plate 1 which is provided with an elongated slot 5 therein within which is located the screwed stem 6 fixed to the slidable member 7 to which the blade carrier 8 is pivotally connected. The member 7 slides on the guard plate 1 along the two rectangular ribs 4?. The slidable member 7 is firmly locked to the guard plate 4 by means of the threaded socketed handle 9 which engages the screwed stem 6.
Formed at the rear of the guard plate 4: is a segmental section 10 having an arcuate slot 11 formed therein. Partially located within the said. slot is the graduated collar 12 of a screw 13 which is provided with a knurled head 14, the screw being adapted to engage a threaded portion 7 of the slidable member 7 and a threaded portion 1* of the guard plate 1, and thereby connects the slidable member 7 t0 the guard plate 1 for the purpose of obtaining a horizontal motion of the slidable member relative to the guard plate.
An index pointer 14 is inscribed on the top face of the member 7 and this pointer is adapted to indicate against the graduations on the collar 12 whereby a definite in dication is obtained of the degree of ad justment effected between the guard plate and the slidable member, and consequently determines the degree of setting or adjustment obtained between the front edge 4 of the guard plate 1 and the front edge of the razor blade 15.
For the purpose of securely maintaining the blade carrier 8 together with the blade 15 in position relative to the blade guard I form in each side of the blade carrier 8 conical apertures 8 these apertures are adapted to be engaged by the conical ends of the screw plug 16 and a locking screw 17 the conical ends being of a similar shape to that of the apertures 8. The screw 17 is rotatably mounted in the slidable member 7 and is provided with an elliptical milled head 17 for ready adjustment. The said conical ends of the plug 16 and screw 17 form the pivot of the blade carrier 8 and blade 15, and by loosening the screw 17 the blade can be rocked about its pivot to the required position, and then firmly locked by tightening up the screw 17.
In the operation of adjusting the slidable member 7 relative to the guard plate & it is first necessary to loosen the handle 9 on the screwed stem 6, the knurled head lat of the screw is then rotated to obtain the desired setting or adjustment between the edge of the razor blade and the front edge of the guard according to individual requirements and then the handle 9 is again tightened against the underside of the guard plate 4-.
By means of the aforesaid invention 1 obtain precise adjustability and setting and moreover obtain a visual indication of the de gree of the said adjustment or setting which is of considerable value to individual users, Who having once ascertained the mark at which they obtain the maximum eifect from required adjustment or setting.
handle an index ointer on said blade cara P rier, a headed screw coupling the Siilti car i'ier with the said guard, and a graduated scale on the said screw adapted to register With the said index pointer for indicating the degree of adjustment obtained between the blade carrier and the blade guard.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES ALEX El -(BY WYATT.
