Application, filed. November i; 1922. Serial no. 600,215. e I
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, ROBERT M. SEARLE a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Means for Gas-Retort ,Eqoouts of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to supporting means for gas retort spoutsv An object of this invention is to provide means for counter-balancing the projecting spout portion of the retort so as to remove the weight of the projecting spout portion and closure f from the bolts or securing means so that when the retort becomes hot the weight of the projecting spout portion and closure will not be imposed upon the bolts to cause the disconnection of the projecting spout portion.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, tll of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a front view of a gas furnace constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to thedrawingsQl indicates the furnace which has any suitable number of retorts mounted there on. In this illustrated embodiment, three retorts are shown. Each of these retorts has a body portion, not illustrated. lying within the furnace proper and a proj-ectmg spout portion 2 securedto the furnace in a known manner by bolts 3. This projecting spout portion carries a closure or door 4tv through which access to the interior of the retort may be obtained.
The feature of this invention is the counter-b alancing ofthe projecting spout portionQ of the retort so that the weight of the said projecting spout portion and the closure sis removed from the securing means or bolts 3 in order that the latter will merely act to hold the projecting spout portion 2 and j which theprojecting spout portions of the retorts are counter-balanced so as to remove closures in position. suitable counter-l balancing means may be employed. In the instance, where thereareshownthree re--.r
torts, three levers 5 are employed pivoted between their ends upon a common shaft 6 and each having on one, side of its pivot a weight 7 adjustable on said lever. Preferably the levers are disposed above the furnace on uprights 8 which support the shaft 1 6 from the top, wall of the furnace. Each lever 5 has at the end opposite the weight a.
flexibl connection with one of the project-' ing spout portions 2. In this instance, this flexible connection is inthe form of a fsteel cable made in two loops 9 and lO, the loop9 i being passed over the lever5 and the. loop 10 being passedunder one of the project ing spoutportions 2so that it liesalso on opposite sides of said projecting spout portion and also on opposite sides of those projecting spout portions 2 above the projecting spoutportion sustained by the'flexible connection. i 7
From the foregoing it will be seen that i there has been provided a gas furnace in from the securing means ofsaid projecting j ng spoutportion, of counter-balancing means for said projecting spout portion and closure. i
and desire spout portions the weight of saidproject 2. The .combinationwithja retort having a I spout portion projecting from 'affurnace, bolts. securing said spout portion in position on the furnace, and a closure for said projecting spout portion, of counter-balancing means for said pro ecting spout portion and closure embodying a lever, a weight on one side of the pivot of the lever, and a flexible connection between said lever and the jec-ting spout portion.
- 3. The combination with a retort having a spout portion projecting from a furnace,
6 bolts'securing said spout portion in position on the furnace, and a, closure for said projecting spout portion, of counter-balancing promeans for said projecting spout portion and jecting spout portion in the form of a, loop passed beneath and on opposite sides of the projecting spout portion.
ROBERT M. SEARLE.
