BENJAVIAN B. WALSTON, OIE' DALLAS, TEXAS.
Doon HOLDER.
Application led October 31, 1922. Serial No. 598,108.
To all whom t may conce/rn.' l
Be it known that I, EENJAMAN B. `WAL- sToN, a citizen oir' the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Holders, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and ethcient device of improved construction adapted to be mounted on a door and the casing thereof for holding the door open in various positions.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features oi' the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood vfrom a reading of the following specication and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a door provided with a device embodying the invention, portions of the door being broken away,
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the door showing the device in plan,
Fig. 3 is a detail of the door in open position, and
Fig. l is an enlarged detail of the locking mechanism.
1n the drawings the letter A designates a door and B the casing thereof. The device is with the door knob 10 so as to be convenient for operation, and includes a hinge 11fsecured to the casing B. The hinge has an elongated shank 12 pivotally connected to which is an elongated latch bar 13. This bar is passed thru a guide 14E and between a pair of ears 15 adj acenty the free end of the bar. An elongated narrow plate 16 underlies the bar 13 in a corresponding recess in the door (Fig. 4f). The outer end of the plate is provided with a plurality of alined apertures or sockets 17 for receiving a stud 18 on the outer end of the bar 13. The stud is normally held out of the sockets by a ing against the plate 16. A latch operating lever 2O is pivoted between the ears 15 and has a head 21. The head is adapted to engage the bar 13 when the lever is swung at right angles to the door, the adjacent preferably mounted approximately on a linev spring 19 secured to the said bar and bear-` corner ot' theJ head being rounded so that it will easily ride over the said bar. A housing 22 is mounted over the sockets 17 and is adapted to receive the end o1 the latch bar when the door is swung.
In operation the door is opened to the desired position, the latch bar at the same time sliding into the housing 22. The lever 2O is then swung at right angles, the head 21 pressing thelatch bar against the plate 16, whereby the stud 18 enters the nearest socket 17. It will be seen that both ends of the latch bar are thus locked, whereby the door A isA prevented from swinging.
When it is desired to close or otherwise change the position of the door it is only necessary to swing the lever to a parallel position, whereby the spring displaces the lfatclli bar and the same is permitted to slide ree y.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different. parts as well as modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
1. The combination with a hinged door and a fixed support adjacent thereto, of a connection pivoted to the said support, a spring pressed latch bar pivoted to the connection, a plate secured to the door at the outer end of the said bar, said plate being provided with a plurality of sockets, means on the latch bar for engaging in said sockets, and means for engaging said latch bar holding said means in one of said sockets, whereby both ends of the said bar are locked and the door is held rigid.
2. The combination with a hinged door and a iXed support adjacent thereto, of a connection pivoted to the said support, a spring pressed latch bar pivoted to the connection, a plate secured to the door at the `outer end of the said bar, said plate being shank, a pair of pivotal ears mounted one on .each side of the latch bar adjacent its free end, a plate mounted 'on the door at the free end of said bar and having a plu- 5 rality of sockets, a stud carried by the latch bai' for engaging in said Sockets,l and av lever pivotally mounted between said ears and adapted to engage the latch bar and hold the said stud in one of the saideockets, whereby both ends ofl the said bar are 10 BENJAMAN B. WALSTON.
