DISPLAY COVER Filed Sept. 14. 1922 Patented .inne 19, i923.
UITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.-
' WALTER s. woon, or cHanLEsTon, WEST VIRGINIA.
f DISPLAY COVER.
Application led September 14, 1922. `Serial No, 588,248.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTERS. Woon, af
citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of `Kanawha and State of l/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dis- Y displayed for sale unsanitary conditions eX- ist because of the liability of dust and other foreign matter settling upon the goods, the accessibility `of insects thereto and the ease with which the goods may be handled and sampled by customers, all of which features are objectionable.
In accordance with the present invention, the merchant is provided with a cover which takes the place of the ordinary wooden cover which is nailed to the box in which the goods are shipped, said cover including a glass top through which the goods may be readily seen, but which protects the same from dust, insects and the handling and sampling thereof by customers, the display cover being retained in place by means of a spring clasp which grips the upper edge portion of a side of the box, said cover being lianged to embrace the sides of the box when the cover is in closed position.
Other objects and advantages will be ap-` parent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.v
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diiferent` conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure l is a perspective view illustrative of the invention, the full lines showing the cover in open position and the dotted lines Y indicating the position of the cover when closed, v
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure l, looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line of'Figure l, looking to the right as indicated by the arrow. f
j `Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral l designates a side of a boX in which the goods is shipped to the merchant. The numeral 2 designates a spring clasp which is fitted to the upper edge portion of the side l. The spring clasp 2 may be of any length and is of such formation as to grip opposite sides of the part 1 in a v manner to hold the cover in place. A hinge member 3 is soldered or otherwise attached to anelement of the spring clasp 2 and preferably consists of a strip. of sheet metal doubled upon itself and having one fold at-` tached to the spring clasp and the other fold hinged to the cover as indicated at 4L, the j hinge joint being a short distance above the lower edge of the depending flange or rim of the cover, so that the depending portion 5 is adapted to operate between the folds of the hinge member Sto' yieldably hold the cover closed.
The cover comprises a metal frame and a glass plate 6 removably fitted to the frame to admit of ready replacement in the event of breakage. The metal frame comprises an Lstrip 7, the outer edges of the flanges or wings of which are folded as indicated at 8 f and 9 primarily for stiffening and reinforcing, as well as to obviate sharp edges which would be liable to injure the hand. An inner strip 10 is applied to the front and end portions of the depending ange or rim of the cover to support the glass plate 6 and is retained in place by the lower folded edge 9. An end iange or depending portion of the cover is formed with an opening through which the glass plate 6 may be slid into pov sition or removed as required.
The display cover will be of a size to fit the boX in which the goods is shipped and after the box has been opened by removing the cover nailed thereto, the display cover is placed in position by fitting the spring clasp 2 to the upper portion of a side thereof as indicated most clearly in Figures 1 and 8.
What is claimed is:
l. A display cover comprising a spring clasp, a hinge member consisting of a folded sheet metal strip having one of the folds attached to an element of the spring catch,
anda coverfhingedly Connected to the other fold of the hinge `vmember.
2. A display cover comprising-va-springclasp, a hinge member consisting of a folded sheet metal strip having one of the folds attached to an element of the springatoh, and a cover hingedly connected to the other fold of the hinge melnberashort distance above the lower edge of the depending rim or flange wherebyv to Yprovide a depending portion to operate' between 'the' folds oft-he hinge member. y
3. Av display Cover comprising a'fmetal Aifra-Ineand a detachable. glass plate, the Inet- Vv-al-'fra'rne eornpr'ising'fanf Lf-strip having the edge portions of its wings folded inwardly, Yandan-inner supporting strip for the glass plate retained in place by the lower folded `edge of the depending rim or flange of the cover.
