J. KLATT CARD REGISTER Filed Jan. 2() 1922 Patented June 19, 1923.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KLATT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO W. W. WILCOX MFG-- 00., OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CARD REGISTER.
Application filed January 20, 1922. Serial No. 530,599.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KLA'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Registers and the cards may be easily inserted and by which the cards will be supported in such a manner that their edge portions will be visible. A further object, in this connection, is to provide a register in which the various card compartments or slots are established by means of sheet metal plates set together in such a manner as to provide a continuous card carrier the length of which is determined in any case by the number of sections so set together.
Another object, in this connection, is to so form the aforesaid sections that when they are set together the card receptacles will be established without the presence of exposed sharp edges of the metal plates such as would be apt to injure the'cards or cut the hands of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of cardcarrier such that the cards will be held in place under spring pressure established by the -.form of the sheet metal sections themselves, so that each card will be more securely held in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a convenient holder within which the card carriers themselves may be mounted and by means of which they will be retained in their proper co-operative relationship.
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same, which consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing;
Figure 1 shows a face view of a two column carrier within which there are located two columns or rows of card holding units;
Fig. 2'shows on'enlarged scale a fragmentary section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; and V Fig. 3 shows in perspective also on enlarged scale a fragmentary view of a portion of one of the card carrying sheet metal units.
Referring first to Figs. 2 and 3, each of the card units comprise a piece of spring sheet metal having its body portion 4 practically flat, and having its upper edge portion 5 folded down towards its back face and its lower edge portion 6 folded up towards its front face. proper width to accommodate the cards of the desired size and to establish card 001- umns of the desired width in the completed register. a o
The register itself shown in Fig. 1 includes the two vertical columns 7 and 8. The frame of the register includes aback piece 9, and suitable side, top and bottom edge pieces 10, 11, 12 and 13 to give the completed register the desired finished appearance.
The card units may-be nested or interlocked together, the lower edge portion 6 of each unit being set into the shallow space beneath the top edge portion 5 of the next lower unit of the series in the manner which will be readily understood from examination of Fig. 2. In initially forming the units, their edge portions should be so pressed that when they are thus nested or interlocked together the edge portion 5 of each'unit will spring into contact with the front surface of the top portion of the next higher unit of the series, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Then, upon insertion of a card as the card 14 in Fig. 2, the said card will be held under spring pressure which will materially assist in holding it in place in the proper manner in the register.
The units are of standard form and construction with the exception of the extreme units of each series. The top unit has its edge portion 15 extended straight back as shown in Fig. 2, so as to enter into a horizontal slot in the upper portion of the These units are of the frame. In this manner the topmost unit of the series is properly positioned and held. The units below it .will retain their proper relative positions on account of the fact that they naturally tend to pull down wardly and thus interlock more firmly in use.
In order to hold the units properly in place, facing strips 16, 17 and 18 may be provided on the frame, said facing strips slightly overlyingthe edge portions of the card units, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. These facing strips may be of any suitable material such as celluloid or other composition held in plaCe by screws or nails 19, the entire arrangement giving the register a finished and pleasing appearance.
While I have herein shown and described only certain embodiments of the features of my present invention, still I do not limit myself to the same except as I may doso in the claims.
I claim:
1. A card register of the type specified comprising in combination a frame, there being a transverse horizontally extending slot in the upperrportion of the frame, a ertical series 'of card carriers within the frame eaclrcard carrier comprising; a sheet metal plate having its upper portion folded backsure between the back surface of the upper portion of each unit and the front face of the body portion of the next higher unit of the series. the upper edge of the top unit of the series having a substantially horizontal tongue formed to interlock with the slot of thefr'ame, and suitable finishing strips on the frame overlying the edge portions of the units to retain them in position within the frame, substantially asdescribed.
2. A card register of the type specified comprising in' combination a frame, there being a transverse horizontally extending slot in the upper portion of the frame, a verticalseries of card carriers within the surface, the upturned'edge portion of each unit interlocking with the downturned edge portion of the next lower unit of the series, the edge portions of the units being so folded as to establish a spring pressure between the back surface of the upper portion ofeach unit. and the front surface of the body portion of the next higheriinit'of the series, the upper edge of the stop unit of the series being suitably formed to interlock with the slot of the frame, substantially as described.
3. A card register ofthe type specified stantially parallel to its front surface, the
upturned edge portion of each'unit'interlocking with the door turned edged portion of the next lower unit of the series, the edge port-ions ofthe units being so folded as to establish a spring pressure between the back surface of the upper portion of each unit and the front face of the body portion of the'next portions of theunits to retain them in position within the frame, substantially as de-v scribed.
4. A card register of the type specified comprising in combination a frame, avertical series of card carriers within the frame, each card carrier comprising a sheet metal plate having its upper portion folded'backwardly and downwardly substantially parallel to its back surface, and having its lower portion folded forwardly and upwardly substantially parallel to its front surface, the upturned edge portion of each unit interlocking with the down turned edge portion of the next lower unit of the series, substantially as described.
