HUGH S. BALL, OF SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-WIPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,778, dated December 23, 1873; application filed June 21, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH S. BALL, of Spartanburg, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Wiper, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents a side elevation of my improved pen- .ing levers, as hereinafter described.

In the drawing, A represents the base of the pen-wiper, preferably of circular shape and solid metal, so that a firm substantial support for the levers is produced. The weight of the base allows the instrument to be used as a paperweight. To the center of base A is screwed or otherwise connected the upright pillar or post 13, which is bifurcated at its upper end, extending in horizontal direction, with a slight upward bend at the rear end. To these prongs a of pillar B is pivoted at 1), immediately above pillar B, the lever O; at their rear end, at b, the lever D. The lower lever C extends backward between prongs a, and is curved upward to support the upper lever D. This end of lever G is suitably grooved, so that lever D more fully rests therein. The

rear end of lever D is straight, and carries the weighted ball or knob E. The front part is curved up, having applied at the end thereof the cup F. The lever O carries at its front end, below cup F, a similar cup, F, both haw ing conical sides, into which are set, facing each other, pieces of sponge e e, which are large enough to fill completely the cups F F. \Vhen, therefore, the pin is placed on the sponge e of lower cup, F, and the same slightly pressed down, lever G acts on the upper lever, D, and brings down the upper cup, F, with sponge e, quickly upon the pen. The sponges absorb the ink .of the pen, so that, on withdrawing the same, it is cleanly wiped. The weighted knob E brings both levers D and 0 back into their former position ready for a new application.

The sponges e 0 may easily be taken out for thorough washing and cleaning, or new ones placed therein, if necessary; or any other absorbing material may be used in their stead. They may also be washed in the cups by wet ting and compressing them, so that they are ready for wiping.

Tl aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent vIn combination with a stand or support, B, the levers O D, provided at one end with sponge-holding cups F F, and respectively curved and weighted at their opposite ends,

as shown and described, to operate as specifled.
