Patented Apr. 20,1886,
n. PETERS. PholwUihOgnphcr. Wnlhinglofl, n. c.
ihiira ST TES EVERETT D. LEE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS JACK FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO.340.331, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed January 18, 1886.
.To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EVERETT D. LEE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Jacks for the Mannfacture of Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to jacks employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and has for its object to improve the means for pressing the spindle by which the last is sup ported toward the toe-rest, thus pressing the toe of the last firmly against said rest.
My invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a jack embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the upper end of the arm to which the last is secured, and by which it is supported. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line a: a; of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all of the figures.
a represents the base or socket for the sphere b, and supporting the frame 0, the latter being swiveled to the sphere and adapted to be clamped thereon, as shown. The base or socket is provided with extensions d d, to the latter of which are pivoted clampinglevers e e, for clamping the sphere in the socket.
The frame a is constructed to support the shank f, provided on its forward end with the toe-rest 9, said shank and rest being adjustable on the frame, to adapt the jack to boots and shoes of varying sizes.
The jack thus far described is identical with that discovered in the application of Henry T. Morse, filed in the United States Patent OfficeNovember 5, 1885, Serial No. 181,893, the invention forming the subjectmatter of which application is assigned to part of said arm h. Said upper end, 1'', is provided with the usual last-holding pin, j, formed Serial No. 188,907. (No model.)
integral therewith or set therein in any suitable way. The base of end i is cylindrical in form,'and at its rear is provided with a downwardly-projecting finger, 7c, somewhat enlarged at its upper end, which finger fits in a correspondinglyshaped slot, 70', in the rear of the upper end of arm h. A pin, Z, by which said part t is pivoted to arm h, passes through the ears on on, forming the sides of slot k, and through the enlarged part of the finger, as clearly represented in the drawings. A chamber, a, is formed in arm h at the lower end of sloth, and extends nearly through said arm. 7
A small screw-threaded hole adapted to receive a screw-threaded shank, 0, of a follower, 0, is formed through arm h from the bottom of chamber a. A spiral spring, 19, is placed in said chamber; with one of its ends resting against said follower and the other against the lower end of finger h, at
which latter point it is sustained in position by a pin, q.
By the construction shown and described it will be seen that spring p, bearing against the lower end of finger R, will swing pivoted part i of arm h audits last-holding pinj toward the toe-rest g, and press the toe of the last against said rest, and the degree of force of such pressure can be regulated by follower 0 and the screw-threaded connection of its shank with arm h of the frame, as will be readily understood.
The adjustability of the force with which the spring presses pivoted part 1' toward the toe-rest and the toe of the last upon or against said rest is a matter of great importance in jacks of this class, as in different kinds of work it is desirable to have said spring operate with difierent degrees of force.
By my improvement in the mechanism to secure the results mentioned I am enabled to simplify and cheapen the construction of the jack, and make itfree on all sides from obstructions of any and all kinds which would be liable to catch the thread and impede operations on the boot or shoe.
I claim- The combination, with the frame and its last-supporting arm h, provided with the slot scribing witnesses, this 15th day of J nnuary, k, ears m m, and chamber 1:, of the part i, 1886. provided with the last-holding pin j, and finger k, pin Z, follower 0, and spring 10, as set EVERETT 5 lort-h. Witnesses:
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name ARTHUR W. CROSSLEY,
to this specification, in thepresence of two sub- H. E. BROWN.
