SHOE-JACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,867, dated July 31, 1888.

Application filed May 1, 1888. Serial No. 272,400.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. DAVIS, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similarletters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is an elevation of a shoejack embodying my invention, with the last in position thereupon, certain portions of the holder being represented as broken out, the better to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 00, Fig. 1.

A represents the base, which in practice is adapted to be screwed to the bench.

B is a round metallic box, whose bottom B is secured to the base A by means of the bolt 0, as shown, whereby said box is enabled to be rotated on the stationary base. A rubber gasket, D, lies on the bottom B and surrounds the bolt G, and a plate, d, centrally perforated to receive the bolt, lies upon the gasket. By means of the nut d and checknut d the pressure of the plate upon the gasket may be regulated, thus providing suitable friction, so that the box B may not be too easily rotated.

E is. a plate or cover provided with the hinge E, whereby it is pivotally secured by means of the pin 0 to the box B, said box being provided with the ears B, through which said pin extends. These ears are provided with steps b, which limit the motion of the plate E, as,when said plateis tipped orswung over to its greatest extent, the wings E, extending from the hinge E, strike and rest upon said steps b. In order to provide friction whereby the plate may be held in any a e desired position, a washer of soft metal, 0, is placed between the hinge E and one of the ears B, as shown.

annular flange E, extending downward from the plate E. The holder H is provided with a toe-piece, H, which has grooves it formed in it in the ordinary manner for the adjustment and reception of the toe-support L, which is in this invention made so as to bend or curve outward toward the toe of thelast S, while the grooves which receive itslower end are substantially vertical. The heel-support I, which holds the heel of the last in the ordinary manner, is pivoted at a to the vertical 6o arms 0, extending from the holder. A stiff spring. P, lies between the lower arm of the lever N and a partition, H, in the holder, whereby the toe of the last is held firmly down upon the toe support L,

It will thus be seen that the jack may be adjusted to suit the operator, first, by rotating the box B upon the base A, by which it may be adapted for a right or left handed workman; second, by tipping the plate E, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2; and, third, by rotating the holder H, whether said plate be in its normal position or tipped.

All the parts of this device are preferably constructed of metal. 7

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described improved shoe-jack, consisting, essentially, of the following parts, viz: the stationary base A, box B, adapted to be rotated upon said base, plate E, pivotally secured to said box, whereby it may be swung up, as shown, and last-holder II, adapted to be rotated upon said plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the base A, the bolt 0, gasket I), disk (I and nuts, the box B, provided with the ears B, the bolt I, gasket J, disk K and nuts, the plate E, provided with 0 the hinge E and flange E, and the holder H, provided with the heel support N and toesupport L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
