I'MPROVEM ENT lN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,767, dated December 23, 1873; application filed October 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. TILToN, otl the city of -Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 'invented certain Improvements in Steam Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specitication:
The object of my invention is to secure the false bottom in its place by simply-arranged bolts and nuts, as shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Fignre l is a perspective view of my false bottom placed in a boiler, the side of which is broken away that the severa-l parts may be seen; Fig. 2, the false bottom removed from the boiler, and Fig. 3 a detail showing the manner of securing the false bottom in. the boiler.
A is a common Wash-boiler; B, the false bottom, which conforms in plan to the shape of the boiler, in 'which itv lits closely. The rim O of the false bottom rests on the bottom of the boiler, forming a water-space, D, under the false bottom and below the clothes. E is a valve in the false bottom, for the admission of the water, which, when heated, is forced out, through the hot-water passages F F', over the clothes in the boiler. The false bottom is secured in its place by the angle-bolts G G', fastened to the hot-water tubes F F'. The screw ends of the bolts pass through the side of the boiler near the top, and are fitted with nuts, which, when screwed up, hold the false bottom securely in its place against the bottom of the boiler.
The clothes to be washed are laid smoothly in the boiler, which is partly filled with water.
As soon as the water in the water-space D begins to boil, the pressure closes the valve E, and the combined hot water and steam are forced up through the hot-water passages F F' and over the clothes. The pressure being thus relieved, the valve E drops, and the cooler water fills the water-space, to be in its turn forced out, producing a constant circulation of hot water and steam through the clothes, cleansing them of all impurities.
The advantages of the arrangement above described are that any wash-boiler can be used, and that it does not interfere with the use ot the boiler for other purposes, as the entire false bottom and its hot-water passages are removable; that no parts are connected to the bottom or sides, Where they Would collect rust and cause leaks; further, that the false bottom is securely and conveniently fastened, and that all the parts can be easily cleaned, dried, and kept in good order.
