v To all whom it may concern:
. HENRY E. w. KOHLBACH,'OF FORT Beg WRIGHT, NEW YOR RICE ATTACHMENT Fen LAWN MOWERS.
Application filed Ma a, 1922. Serial No. 558,807.
.Be it known that I, HEN Y F. W. KoHL- BACH, Srgt. 6th Co., L. I. S., a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort H. G. Wright, in the county of Suffolk, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lawn Mowers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w1 -ll enable others skilled in the art to whlch 1t appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpening devices, and
tral sectional view on the cally extending portion 12, the outer and particularly to devices for sharpening the rotatable cutters of lawn-mowers.
One object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted to be detachablyclamped on the stationary blade of the mower, and which carries a removable sharpening device on which the rotatable cutter is adapted to rub, when rotated, to sharpen the cutting edges of the cutter.
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the structure serves to effectively prevent any tendency toward movement of the device on the stationary blade of the mower, and wherein the removable sharpening file is also held in position.
Other objects and advantages, will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. 7
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device shown attached to a portion of the stationary blade of a lawn-mower.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse central sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal cenline 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompan ing drawing, 10 represents a portion of t e stationary blade of a lawn-mower, to which 'the invention is adapted to be applied. The present device consists of a lower elongated metal plate 11 which is slightlygreater in length than the-cutting blade 10. On each end of the plate 11 there is formed a vertiside portions of the same lying in the planes of the ends and. sides of the plate, while the inner edge face is undercut, or beveled,
-.as seen at 13, in Figure 3, for a distance,
from the upper face, about one-half of the f thickness thereof, the remaining lower pore 'tions' thereof being vertical, 'or at right angles to the upper flat face, as shown at 14.
By-this construction the longer inner angle 15, of the portion or' lug 12, overlies the upper face of the plate 11. Between the inner obtuse angles 16, of the lugs 12 there extends. a rib 17, which, in cooperation with the end walls 14, and the upper face of the plate 11, form a recess which receives the outer edge portion ofthe cutterblade of the mower. the inner faces of the lugs 12 .are cut obliquely across the-upper face of the plate, which results in the formation of the acute angle 15 and the obtuse angle 16, before-' mentioned.
A flat metal file 18 is disposed on the upper face'of the blade 10, and has its ends out off obliquely, at 19, in correspondence with'the obliquely cut inner edge faces of the lugs 12, said ends being also beveled, at
20, for wedging engagement with the beveled and oblique edge faces of the lugs.
In the intermediate portion of the plate 11, there is formed an elongated opening 21, and disposed in this opening is a cam 22,
the same being formed with a "depending handle which is adapted to be grasped to rotate the cam and force the same into firm engagement withthe lower face of the blade '10, and whereby the sharpening device is able toward and away from the rotatable 95 I cutter are turned to lower the blade 10. The mower is then operated in the usual manner, with the result that the cutting edges of the rotatable cutter will wipe across the cutting face of the file, and be properly sharpened.
When the file becomes worn, it may be readily removed and a new one put inits place.
- It will be noted that the direction of the 16 oblique cuts of the lugs 12, and of the ends of the file, is such that the action of the rotary cutter will have a'tendency to drive the file into closer wedging enga-H-t with the lugs. v
, What is claimed is:
A'sharpenin'g device for a lawn-mower It will also be noted that it comprising a plate having a longitudinal recess for the reception of the stationary blade of a mower, upstanding lugs on the ends of the plate and having their inner 5 faces extending obliquely across the face of the plate, the upper portions of the oblique inner faces of the lugs being undercut and the lower portions vertical, means en aged through the late for engagement wit the W stationary b ade of a mower, and a removable file disposed on the plate and overlying the said recess and having its ends ex! tending obliquely and being undercut for wedging engagement with'the 11 per p0r tions of the inner faces of the sai lugs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my' slgnature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY F. W. KOHJBA-CH.
