UNITED- STATES PATEQNTIOFYFICE...
MARION J. BOSS, OF'LYNBROOK, NEW YORK, AND GEORGE T. ATKINSON, 'QF'PHIL.A- I
' DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. a
SIDEWALK noon.
Application filed May 9,
To all whom it may concern:
GEORGE T. ATKINSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Lynbrook and Philadelphia, respectively, in the counties of Nassau and Philadelphia and States of New York and Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Side walk Doors, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to doors, and particularly to an improvement in the construction of side-walk doors. 1 v
Some ofthe principal objects'and advantages sought to be accomplished by theinvention are; to provide a door construction of this class. the several parts ofwhich are adapted to lie substantially flush with the surface in which it is mounted; to provide means for hinging the door to its frame, which is so constructed as to conceal and protect the same against the elements and which at the same time eliminates dangerous and unsightly'projections and obstructions on the side-walk; to provide a side-walk door and frame structure, including means constituting a part of one, of the doors, which .is adapted to support the meeting edges of the doors and co -acts therewith-to render the same. water-tight and weatherproof at this point; and to provide a door structure of the class described which is simple in construction, strong, durable and effective for the purposes for which it is de signed. v
WVith these and other objects in view, which will be more apparent hereafter, reference is made to the following description, claims and accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application.
In .the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View 'therethrough taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. a
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the side-walk which is provided with a door opening 11, in which is countersunk a frame'12, of substantially right angular. construction in cross section. The upper surface 13 of the horizontal portion of the frame is slightly 1921. Serial No. 467,906.
beveled and inclines downwardly towardlits outer edgesv in order to provide means for draining waterwhich may fall uponthe doorway. The upper surfaceqis also provided with a plurality of transverse chan nels 14 which serve to'drain water which might otherwise collect between the inner edges of the frame and the doors Theangular formation of the frame is such as to provide depending flanges 15 which extend downwardly from the inner edges the side rails of .theportions 12 and; horizontal extensions 16 projects inwardly therefrom adjacent the upper portions 'ofsaid flanges. Said extension .beingon substantially the same horizontal plane as the side-walk. The said extensions 16 are provided with grooves 17 substantially semi-circular in cross section, havingrestricted throatswith 'oppositely beveled side walls'18. ..-'Suitable packing elements 19, such ashempropeor other material which expand when subjected to the action of water or moisture, are disposed within the grooves 17. Housings 20 are formed on and: depend from the under-subface .of the frame;12 in spacedrelationat two of the opposing side rails thereof, and the flanges 15 are cut awayas at 20 to pro vide communication between the housings and the interior of the door opening for a purpose to be hereafter set'forth- The doors 21 and 22 are respectively hinged to the opposite side rails j of the frame on which housings 20 are formed, the hinges which} operat-ively connect the. doors with the frame, include a horizontal portion 23 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the under surface of the doors. The inner extremity of the portion 23 isv curved outwardly as at 24 where it is connected with the straight portion 25, the free end of which is apertured for the reception of the hinge pin 26, passed transversely through the side walls of the housings 20. The curve of'the portions 24 which are concentric to the pin 26in order to permit of the free movementof said portions around the ex tensions 16, operate through the cut-away portions 20 of the flanges. The doors are provided adjacent their outer edges with depending sealingflanges 27, the opposite sides of which are beveled as at 28 to snugly fit the beveled faces of the restricted throat 18 of the groove in the extension 16.
' bar is beveled at its free edge as illustrated at 31, and said beveled portion is adapted to co-act with the oppositely beveled portions 32 provided on the 'door frame 12. A portion of the bar 29 underlies the door 21 and said underlying portion is provided with the groove 32 of substantially circular formation in cross section and having a restricted throat provided with oppositely beveled faces 33. A suitable packing 34 is received by the groove 32 and the door 21 is provided with a depending sealing flange 35 having oppositely beveled faces 36 which are adapted to snugly fit the restricted throat of the groove 32. From the foregoing description it will be seen that a sidewalk door is provided which is practically flush with the sidewalk and which effectively excludes the possibility of the entrance of moisture when the doors have been closed.
l Vhile there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is merely illustrative of one method in which the invention may be'reduced to practice and no limitation is made to the exact details of construction but such changes and alterations as fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of 'a framework having a counter-sunk opening and formed with ways from the margin of said framework to the bottom of said countersink, doors mounted so as to seat themselves in said opening and on the shoulder formed by the countersink,
and sealing means between said doors and said shoulder.
2. A device of the class described comprising a framework having a counter-sunk opening forming a shoulder against which a door may rest and be supported, said shoulder formed with a groove having guide surfaces inclined toward said groove, packing in said groove, doors hingedly mounted to said framework, and means on said doors and controllable by said guide surfaces for co-operating with said groove and packing to effect a water-tight seal.
3. Door construction comprising, a door setting embodying a frame having drainpassages therein, counter-sunk and provided with a marginal packing-channel entirely along the insides of said frame, a pair of doors hingedly mounted to the frame, said doors having a flange along at least three edges thereof and arranged in a manner to be received by said channel, the said doors fitting in said frame flush with the upper surfaces thereof.
4. Door construction comprising, a door setting embodying a frame having drain- 1 passages therein, an inner marginal packing-channel and being counter-sunk to provide door rests, doors hinged to said frame, a supporting bar having a packing-channel therein attached to the free end of one of said doors, one of said doors having a marginal flange along three edges thereof, and the other of said doors having a marginal flange along the four edges thereof, the
flange of said first door being received in the packing-channel of said frame, and the flange of said last mentioned door being received in part in the packing-channel of said frame and in part in the packing-chan nel of saidbar when the doors are in closed position.
In testimony whereof we have aflixed our signatures.
MARION J. ROSS. GEORGE T. ATKINSON.
