LOCKING HINGE.
Application filed November 16, 1921. Serial No. 515,535.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I. KARL Or'ro Gonna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California. have invented a new and useful Locking Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hinges and its particular object is to combine with the hinge commonly used a locking device by means of which the hinge may be prevented from swinging on its pivot whereby the object supported on the hinge is locked at the same time.
lVith this object in view I have illustrated the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates my locking hinge in its locking position and in side elevation; Figure 2 a horizontal cross section through the same along line 22 of Figure 1, and Figure 3 a similar view as that disclosed in Figure 1 showing a slight modification in the means for locking the hinge.
Attention is called to the fact that many modifications or changes might be .made from the form illustrated in the drawing without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The hinge (1) is shown as comprising the two hinge members (2) and (3) pivotally connected by means of the pin (4). The hinge member (2) is secured by means of screws (6) to a support (7) which may be of any desired shape while the hinge member (3) is rigidly secured by means of screws to the member (8) 'and supports the same. It is assumed for the purpose of this illustration that the support (7) is stationary while the member (8) swings on the hinge. This is not necessarily so and I do not Wish to be confined to this assumption. The hinge member (2) has secured thereto. by means of rivets (9) or in any other feasible manner, a rigid strip of metal (11) which extends into the support (7) which for this purpose is provided with a suitable recess (12). The metal strip (11) extends beyond the pivot of the hinge and is provided as its far end with a projection (13) adapted to be received in a slot (14) of the in its place and I do hinge member (3) when the two hinge members are alined. The projection is provided with a perforation (16) which appears outside of the hinge member (3) and which may be used to lock the metal strip in its position either by receiving the hook (17) pivotally secured tothe hinge member (3) as shown at (18) or by receiving a pad-lock (19) such as is shown in Figure 3., To allow the member (8) to swing on the'support (7 it is necessary of course that a recess (21) of proper dimensions be provided 7 within the member (8) which allows the latter to swing without being interfered with by the metal strip (11).
It is understood that many different means may be selected for locking the strip (11) not wish to be confined to the particular means illustrated in the drawing. It will also be understood that the strip (11) is not necessarily confined to the particular shape illustrated in the drawing but that it can be adapted in many ways and particularly shaped in such a manner as to lock the member (8) in a different position. If, for instance, it should be desired to lock the member (8) when the same occupies an angular position relative to the support (7 it is only necessary to bend the metal strip (11) into the proper form to adjust my device to the situation.
I claim:
1. The combination of a hinge made of two strips of metal pivotally connected to 1 each other and alock comprising a slot in one strip, a rigid member secured to the other strip having a projection engaging the slot when the hinge is turned into a desired position, and means for locking the projection to said slot. v
2. The combination of a hinge made of two strips of metal pivotally connected to each other and a lock comprising a slot in one strip, a rigid member secured to the other strip so as to extendbeyond the pivot having a projection engaging the slot when the hinge is turned into a desired position, alnd means for locking the projection to said s 0t. 2
3. In combination, a stationary element and a. swinging element having co-acting hinge strips attached thereto a, pivotal conrigid member, a slot in the second strip, a y nection between the strips, a rigid member projection on the rigid member engaging the secured to the stationary strip extending slot when the swinging element is turned 1 into the stationary element and reaching beinto a desired position, and means for lock- 5 yond the pivot into the swinging element ing the projection in that position.
rearwardly of the other strip, a recess in the swinging element adapted to receive the KARL OTTO GOBER.
