Description

PIFVEITHI. 000a HAS P; APPLICATION FILED NOV-29, l9l9.
Patented June 1-, 1920.
INVENTOR. ByPaul Vbl ih I Wfi A TTORNE Y.
A L' VEITI-LVO'F SAN FRANCIS-CO, CALIFORNIA.
noon-H-AsPJ receiving bail may be passed through an opening in the abutment for the door and receive the lock, the construction and arrangement being such that when the door is locked the hasp is fully inclosed, and consequently can not be tampered with by parties intent on burglarizing the structure to'which the hasp and lock is attached.
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved construction of door hasps in which the attaching plate is secured to the inner face of a door, and the swinging plate which carries the lock receiving bail is provided with an offset portion at its hinged connection with the securing plate,.
the said offset portion serving as a contact member and designed to engage w1th the abutment for the door when the door is swung closed, so as to swing the hasp upon its pivot and cause the bail carried thereby to be directed through a suitable opening in the abutment member, thus automatically operating the swinging member upon the closing of the door to arrange the same flush against the inner face of the abutment member and to project the bail a sufficient distance through the said abutmentmeinber to receive the hasp of a lock. 7
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood maybe accomplished by a construction and operable arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation looking toward the outer edge of a door and theabutment portion of a building therefor showing the bail of the hasp projected through the abutment and a lock applied thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view but showing the arrangement of parts when the;

abutment member.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted June 1, 1920.
contact member-of thehasp engages with thefouter edge of the abutment member. to cause the swinging of the'hasp to bring the bail thereof through the opening in the abutment member. i
Fig. 4 is a'perspective viewof the hasp;
Referring now to the drawings in'deta'il,
the numeral 1 designates a hinged door and 2the member of a structure to be closed by the door. As thedoor contacts with the member 2 when the said door is inlclosed position, the said member 2 will hereinafter be referredto as the door abutment member. The abutment member .2 has its outer edge at the portion thereof which is in a line with the hasp, hereinafter to be described, preferably cut at an inward inclination as indicated'by the numeral 3, and received in this I portion of the member 2 is the angle end 4 of a plate 5. The plate is secured upon the outer face of the abutment member 2 and is provided with an elongated slot 6 that registers with a similar slot or opening 7 in the The outer end wall of the slot 7 is preferably beveled or arranged at an inclination as indicated by the'numeral 8.
' On'the inner face of the door 1 is secured the fixed plate 90f the hasp. To the outer end of this plate is hingedly secured, as at 10, the swinging member 11 of the hasp.
The member 11 has a right angularly extending U-shaped bail 12 on one of the faces thereof, and the said swinging member at its hinged connection with the fixed plate 9 is provided with an outwardly eX- tending preferably curved extension 13 that provides a contact member. 7 The swinging member of the bail, whe
the door is to be closed, has its contact mem her 13 in the path of engagement with the angle end 4 of the plate 5, and by virtue of such engagement the swinging member will be swung toward the inner face of the abutment member 2, causing the bail 12 to pass through the slot 7 in the member 2 as well as the slot 6 in the plate 5, the said bail being projected a suitable distance outward of the member 2 to receive the shackle 14: of a lock 15.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will render the construction, operation and advantages of the device perfectly clear to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In combination with a swinging memher, an abutment therefor and said abutment having, an opening including a plate fixed to the inner face of the swinging member, a second plate hingedly connected to the fixed plate, a bail on the last mentioned plate, and a contact member on the last mentioned plate at its hinged connection with the fixed plate, and said contact member adapted to engage with the outer end of the abutment member when the swinging member is closed thereon, to cause the hinged member of the hasp to be brought against the inner face of the abutment member and the bail to be projected through the opening in the said abutment. v V
2. In combination with a hinged door and an 7 abutment therefor, the said abutment being provided with an opening, the outer l s end wall of which being arranged angutherethrough, of a hasp the opening in the said abutment and hava hasp including a plate which is secured on the inner face of the door, and a second plate which is hingedly connected to the fixed plate, said'last mentioned plate having an extending bail thereon, and having a curved extension at its hinged connection with the fixed plate'that provides a contact member designed, when the door is closed to engage with the angle end of the plate on the abutment to swing thehinged plate against the inner face of the abutment and to projectthe bail through the openings in the said abutment and plate;
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
