G. F. HITCHINGS. Boilers for Warming Buildings.

CHARLES F. HITOHINGS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOILERS FOR WARMING BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,654, dated December 16, 1873; application filed November 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Hrrcnnvcs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Boiler, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved boiler; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, on the line a c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the ash-pan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in base-burning boilers, which are more particularly intended for the heating of water for warming buildings, but may also be used for other suitable purposes, the invention consisting chiefly in applying a water-foot of annular form at the lower end of the fuel-reservoir,
' and in connecting said water-foot by a pipe or conduit with the outer water-chamber of the boiler.
In the accompanying drawing, theletter A represents the shell of the boiler. Within the same is placed the ash-pan B, upon which the grate O and the inner shell I) are supported. The ash-pan, which is more fully shown in Fig. 3, is cast in one piece, with a solid bottom, open top, and open face, a horizontal flange, a, being formed at its upper edge for supporting the grate and the inner shell I), while a vertical flange, b, is formed around the side open ing (1, to bear against the inner side of the shell A, in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. This construction of ash-pan is different from others, more particularly because the entire pan is cast in one piece with its appendages, while heretofore ash -pans were usually wrought into shape, the flanges being usually attached to them by upsetting or riveting, the cost of manufacture being consequently reduced by my invention. E is the fuel-reservoir, extending from the top of the boiler downward toward the grate to admit fuel from above to the latter. The lower end of this reservoir is connected with an annular chamber, F, which I call the water-foot of the fuel-reservoir. This water-foot may be made separate and attached to the reservoir E 5 or it may be formed in one piece with the same, as maybe desired, and
is connected by a pipe or conduit, 0, with the main water-space j, that is formed between the shells A and D. This water-foot F, being, as stated, at the lower end of the fuel-reservoir, and consequently between the same and the fire, serves, in the first place, to protect the fuel-reservoir, and to prevent it from being rapidly burned or destroyed by the heat; and it also, being in the place stated, furnishes the best means for a rapid utilization of the products of combustion, as the heat is the greatest at the place where such water-foot is located.
By connecting the water-foot, in the manner stated, with the main water-space f, circulation will be induced, and the advantages of the location of the water-foot utilized in the entire heating apparatus.
' I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boiler for heating purposes composed of the shell A, inner case D, and ash-pan B, forming between them the water-spacef, and of the fuel-reservoir E and grate 0, all arranged in relation to each other substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
The combination of the shells A D and ash-pan B, which form between them the waterspace f, with the pipe or conduit 6 and annular water foot f, all arranged substantially as specified.
CHAS. F. HITOHI'NGS. Witnesses FRED. HAYNEs, MICHAEL RYAN.
