Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIOE.
JOSEPH PENNOR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOE TO NESBIT D. STOOPS AND JOHN E. MYERS, OF SAME PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.
Specification forming part of' Letteis Patent No. 145,612, dated December 16, 1873; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BENNOR, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Extension Tables for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to a device for locking the cover of a sewing-machine firmly, in connection with the table-top, when placed in connection therewith as an extension of the Same. 1t consists of a cam or eccentric lever, connected with the under side of the table-top, working on a fulcrum-pin connected therewith, a cam or eccentric edge or rim of the lever being pressed against the adjacent vertical side of the cover, whereby the latter is held securely in connection-with the table-top.
lo give greater security to the fastening, the cam or eccentric is provided with a knifeedge around it, which bites into the wood, making an indentation at the first fastening, which it slides into when subsequently used. The binding-surface of the cam or eccentric constitutes the exterior of a rim which projects from 'the under side of the lever. rlhis rim is of equal thickness, so as to make its inner surface perform a like function as the outer surface, when used instead of the latter for locking the cover, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is an end view of the table-top A of a sewing-machine, and the cover B in connection therewith, provided with my locking device. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the lockingcam or eccentric lever F.
Like letters of reference in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the top of a sewing-machine table. B is the cover of the machine. Vhen used as an extension ofthe table-top A,it is supported in its level position therewith by means of the swinging and'sliding brackets C C, having hooks c c, the castings D D, having inclines b b, and the slotted castings E E, coniined to the top A of the table, as seen in Fig. l. F is a cam or eccentric lever. (Shown fully in detail in Fig. 3.) It is hung on the fulcruin pin or Screw G, connected with the under Side of the top A. Vhen not in use, it is swung around out of the way into the position represented by dotted lines; and, when used for locking the cover with the top A, it is turned around until the outer surface c of the eccentric rim j' bears hard against the vertical side a of the cover B, so as to hold it firmly in position, as represented by full lines, the knife-edge g at the same time biting into the side a of the cover to give increased security to the fastening. The action of the lever also tends to draw the hcoks c c of the brackets C G hard' on the inclines b b of the castings D D, to assist in fastening the cover in position.
I claim as my inventionrIhe lever G, having an eccentric or inclined Surface, e, and knife-edge g, in combination with the table-top A and cover B, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above described.
JOSEPH BENNOR.
